East Bay BBQ

Fans of Texas-style BBQ have inevitably heard of Horn Barbecue based in Oakland and helmed by Pitmaster Matt Horn

I’ve never been to the original location and have read tidbits about the recent press issues but decided to stop by one of their newer locations and try for myself

The Lafayette space has been open a little less than a year (Dec 2024) and their Elk Grove location just opened (June 2025) with another fourth location already planned. It’s clear Horn is in expansion mode

I stopped by for dinner and many items were sold out including the Beef Rib (Sat only), multiple sides, and banana cream pie. Luckily, they still had brisket (both fatty and lean), pork ribs and shredded pork

Manning the station was Jordan Horn, the brother of Matt Horn and he was personable and funny talking about the expanding business and favorites of guests

We sampled the fatty brisket, pork ribs, and pulled pork and had a side of mac 'n cheese. Everything was solid. The brisket was flavorful but would have loved it more moist nor tender. Similar with the pork ribs. Pulled pork was similar to other places but definitely had to lean more into their supplied bbq sauce

Admittedly, we came at end of day and the brisket had probably finished hours before. Jordan also gave some great pointers on how to order next time and I appreciate that.

For barbeque fans, it's nice to have another option in East Bay (especially one that serves beef ribs) and not have to travel to Oakland

“Very good place to enjoy some quality variety of beers and solid grill menu. Really like the vibe of the place and the spot in town with some older style buildings rather than so many other modern and stake places. Burger and sausage plate were very good, and didn't take too long even on a crowded holiday.”

“Date night was a hit because of this place! Food was absolutely amazing and delicious! Hi host was prompted and friendly. Out door dining and indoor dining had intimate spaces. The environment was very clean, comfortable and welcoming!”

“I normally don’t like white sauce on my pizza, but the vegan pizza of the day was mushroom with white sauce. It’s outstanding! We also got a salad and both salad dressings. They offer are vegan as well. Highly highly recommended. We couldn’t figure out why the place is so dead on a Thursday night. ”

“Decided to go to the lunch buffet on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm glad that we did because the service was exceptional and the food was delicious. The vibe is relaxing, welcoming, and clean. They have plenty of natural light due to the many windows facing the parking lot. We walked in and the host greeted us immediately. He was friendly and asked us if we would like buffet or to order from the menu. We chose the buffet, well and the menu... My husband ordered saag chicken and garlic naan off of the menu, we were not disappointed. The food was very fresh and well seasoned. My favorites were the Eggplant Masala and the Tandoori Vegetables. The eggplant was very flavorful and it went really well with the garlic naan. The tandoori vegetables were cooked perfectly, still a slight crunch to them, very tasty. I couldn't decide between a mango lassi and a chai, so I got both... no regrets! So satisfying. They have a full bar and much to my husbands delight, they have 805 on tap. Our waiter returned to check on us and fill our water multiple times during lunch. I could see stopping here on the way home from the office to grab dinner and have a drink while the traffic dies down.”

“Limited seating so I found a bench nearby in the sunshine. That was perfection enjoying the bakery item in the warm sunshine on a beautiful Sunday morning! Line took about 5 mins.”

“This is a fabulous Thai Restaurant. You are greeted with a warm smile and then served really delicious food. I had curry puff balls followed by spicy prawns and bacon. Who doesn’t love prawns and bacon. The flavors were fabulous and the vegetables were so fresh and tasty. I will be back for more for sure. Thank you. Five stars from me.”

“Enjoy coming to yogurt shack in the heart of Danville. Great variety of yogurt flavors and toppings. The owners staff with mostly high school youth. Looks like an excellent first job and the kids seem to not only enjoy working there but are very friendly and helpful. I love that it is conveniently located next to primos. It's a great after dinner treat.”

“What a cute little spot right next to the Lafayette post office! The lady who owns and runs the place with her husband is so sweet. She cares deeply about her customers and the community. Also, the menu emphasizes clean organic food. If you're looking for a nice simple spot for breakfast or lunch, this is a lovely little place. “My husband and I had the most delicious empanadas when we were in Patagonia. We had some killer empanadas in Boulder. And now, we found some in our own town of Lafayette. The chicken was better than the veggie. The veggie just needed some more oven time.?When you order, best to take home and heat up. They did not come with a chimichurri sauce but should!”

“Loved this place, but removing a star because they took the teriyaki salmon option off the menu. Strange, because everyone loved it and it was often sold out! The raw fish is hit or miss. Bring back the teriyaki!

My roommates and I check doordash every week or so, just to see if they have Salmon Samba.”

“Nice little hidden gem in the town of Lafayette. Highly recommend to all. They have delicious pastries such as their chocolate croissant that I highly recommend to all. Plenty of iced coffee, hot coffee, and iced tea with Boba. Prices are fair and staff are very kind”

“I should have taken a picture, but I scarfed the burrito down so fast! I just wanted to rave about this place and their wonderful customer service. I came in and asked for a simple bean and cheese burrito. I paid and then it occurred to me after to ask what kind of beans they use (I'm 7.5 months pregnant and for whatever reason, only like refried beans.... oh, pregnancy!). He said they only use whole beans. I tried to see if I could get something else for the same price I paid (which he was so nice about), but ultimately decided, "Oh well, I'll just stick with what I ordered!" I went to the bathroom and when I came out, he said, "We are making the beans refried for you now!" I thought that was so nice of them! It was so good too. Definitely recommend this place!!!”

“When everything goes right!! Friendly happy welcoming staff. Great food and cosy atmosphere all over. My Mexicali burger was perfect. The ice tea was delish. I need to call them and ask what tea they use as I’m a tea snob. The final icing - a big slice of complimentary coffee cake that is the bomb. I’ll be back.”

“First time back here since I moved away after high school in 2013. The bagels used to be the best in the area and now they’re super generic and taste like something you get packaged at the store. Cream cheese is still great but they used to toast the bagel perfectly and it had an amazing crunch. My guess is people complained it was “burnt”. Disappointed but still a great coffee shop.”

“Incredible Shrimp Burrito. I'm a longtime chef and restaurant manager and this place is a GEM. I was running around, working, and needed a burrito fix and the Shrimp burrito is Lights out good. Not greasy, super clean, balanced flavors. Nothing clashes, juicy, and big flavor. And they make their own blue corn tortilla chips and they're complimentary?! Who does that these days? This Chef and family is talented and deserves your hunger and hard earned dollars - IT'S WORTH IT. Enjoy and You're Welcome! Lol”
