“Family run spot in San Bruno. Located on El Camino Real, it's easy to miss if you drive by.
The restaurant itself isn't too large, but there's seating for groups of all sizes. The menu is pretty extensive and has a good variety. We ended up getting a sashimi combo, one roll, and the lamb appetizer.
The sashimi itself was pretty tasty with no fishy smell. We got a good variety of sashimi, but my favorite was the salmon. The lamb was delicious as well and we're a good size.
Service is good and the staff is nice. We got our drinks refilled often without us asking.“

“This spot is truly a hidden gem in the San Bruno neighborhood! The vibe is warm and welcoming, making it perfect for a casual dinner or a special night out. The sushi is fresh and flavorful, with a solid variety of traditional rolls and appetizers. If you’re into omakase, they offer that as well—an excellent option for those who want to sit back and enjoy the chef’s selections. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!“

“I have drove and walked pass here a few times. I was working nearby on a evening schedule, me and my coworker were browsing through DoorDash since we were in need of a quick bite and we decided to give this place a try. They offer many authentic Japanese dishes from traditional sushi rolls, specialty rolls, appetizers, ramen, sashimi, vegetarian items, bento box, party trays and much more to choose from. We were both excited when the order was placed, at that point we got even more hungrier and could not way to try the food we ordered. Finally the food arrived and it was time to dig in. The food was fantastic, delicious and has great quality where I believe they carefully select their ingredients. Everything here is made to order which is always a plus for me since it is quality over quantity and I never mind the wait since I am a very patient person. One day I will make a visit to dine in here. I highly recommend this place to all sushi/Japanese food lovers, if you need a quick bite just like me or if you just so happen to be in the area to check them out. I definitely will be back to tryout the other delicious options they have to offer.“

“I heard the one in San Francisco Centre was closing, and remembered this one was still open. Since they opened there in 2014, they'd often have someone giving out samples of the signature chicken, but I never was there during a meal time to order. As Tanforan is shutting down for redevelopment, Finally I did patronize Sarku after years of procrastination. So it was great, I ordered the best selling chicken teriaki combo with rice and brocolli. The teriaki flavor was really subtle, in that it was not very strong, but enough to notice. The brocolli had kind of a janky safeway brocolli bag taste, but it was okay because the rice was tasty and overall the whole thing was good and fulfilling. I would give the food 4.5 stars. I had some leftover chicken bits and might put some sauce on it. According to Tanforan management, the whole food court is shutting down. More than half of the food court stalls (including upstairs) are empty. The employee said they were not moving to Serramonte like the yogurt shop. I noticed as I ate there were like 10 doordash orders picked up. Pretty impressive. The free sample program probably got them a lot of customers over the year. I hope to try Sarku again at their other locations and that they will consider opening a new location in San Francisco north peninsula. I wish the employees there well.“

“I think it must take a lot of effort to source the ingredients to be able to serve sushi of this caliber in San Francisco. It's a great honor to be a fishmonger.‼️“

“The miso soup was forgettable, but I enjoyed the sashimi (chefs choice).
The maki toll (spicy tuna) was quite disappointing, maybe we could’ve got something more flavorful and extravagant.
I think the real wasabi was a nice touch, and the fish was fresh but I think lacked in the presentation.“

“Excellent meal here. The miso sea bass was delicious, and the nigiri in the seasonal omakase was great. Wagyu nigiri was a standout. Our waitress/server was fantastic also! one of the best sushi/omakases in san mateo in my opinion! pricing is absolutely reasonable too.“

“Lion West Portal was an amazing experience! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff helpful. The star of the show is an entire dedicated page of the menu for vegan sushi with a 90min AYCE option. The rolls were big and beautiful with lots of different flavors. This is a must visit if you’re looking for vegan sushi in SF. Updated from previous review on 2026-02-15“

“The food here was definitely the highlight. Everything tasted pretty fresh and flavorful, and overall I would rate the food about 4/5. The ingredients seemed good quality and the dishes were enjoyable.
However, the service was a bit disappointing. The staff did their job, but they didn’t feel very welcoming or friendly. There wasn’t much interaction beyond the basics, and with the price point here, I expected a more warm and attentive experience.
The atmosphere was also just okay. It wasn’t fancy or fine dining, but it also didn’t really give a strong Japanese vibe either. The environment felt a bit mixed and not very memorable.
Overall, I’m giving 4 stars mainly because the food was good. If I rated the experience as a whole (food + service + atmosphere), it would probably be closer to 3/5. Still worth trying if you care mostly about the food.“

“Easily the best sushi in the area. The fish selection is seasonal. The preparation is thoughtful and appealing.
The restaurant is tiny and seats 12 patrons. The decorations are a little kitschy but the food is worth it. This is one of the few sushi restaurants I keep coming back to.“

“We love going here - it's sort of tucked away giving it a hidden gem feeling. The staff is warm, friendly and attentive. Sashimi is delicious and wonderfully presented. It was pricier than we expected but one wonderful thing they did for us was deep fry some of the decorations on the premium sashimi plate (the shrimp heads and the mackerel bones) - it was delicious and a nice, fun finish to the meal.“

“What a find! We were visiting family in the neighborhood and found this gem. Everyone was friendly, the service was fast but we never felt rushed, and the food was fresh and flavorful. We really enjoyed the Rock ‘n’ Roll and Sunset Strip rolls and the chicken katsu was literally the best we’ve ever had!“

“This is my favorite sushi place in the city. I have been eating here for years and Benji and Tiffany are like family. They have sushi rolls that are unlike anywhere else and no other place can beat theirs. They have small plates so you can get a variety and try everything. These are my must haves every time: Spicy white tuna sashimi, special roll (shrimp tempura), asparagus maki, tataki nigiri, crab salad nigiri, spicy tuna maki. The most impressive thing is that there isn’t imitation crab in any of their rolls.“

“Cozy little Japanese restaurant with super friendly servers. The owner works at the counter. I come for Ishiyaki Hitsumamushi (Stone Bowl Seafood Rice) which I don’t think is served anywhere else. I also had tuna bone marrow for appetitzer and black sesame cheesecake for dessert. So many other dishes I want to try so will be back.“

“This place must be a well-kept secret because it's rarely crowded for dinner. I imagine it has crowds at lunch as UCSF staff come down the hill to eat. The food is excellent and not expensive. The staff is friendly without being imposing. I think it's a husband and wife in the kitchen. Lady in Red and Caterpillar are my favorite sushi rolls, but all that I've tried has been superb. I've enjoyed their Bento Box and Saki too.“

“Absolutely love Tomokazu! Every dish is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The sashimi is top quality, and the rolls are always creative and delicious. The beef short rib and shioyaki saba were also amazing, even though I didn’t get a photo! The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is cozy, and this place never disappoints. One of the best Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area! 🍣✨“

“Was headed downtown for a concert and this restaurant was along the way of the Metro so we decided to try it out. The sushi were decent and tasty. The sashimi were sliced thicker than I'm used to but was not an issue. Overall no complaints with the food. If I had to nitpick, the atmosphere felt a bit of a mix bag with European paintings and all-cantonese speaking staff which questions the authenticity of the (Japanese) restaurant. Then again, who am I to judge, we ordered a maki with cream cheese 🤣“

“This might me my favorite sushi spot on the Peninsula! Everything we had was top-tier in taste. The service was fantastic as well. They gave me complimentary miso and gave us both some yummy salmon to try. This place is small so I anticipate a wait during peak meal times.“

“Came here for the first time and I’m impressed! The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the beef teriyaki and it was cooked perfectly — tender, flavorful, and the sauce was spot on. The presentation was beautiful as well. My wife had the Sushi Salmon Paradise and loved every bite, and my father devoured the Megabite roll. We also had the tempura string beans with onions — crispy, light, and just downright delicious. This place is a welcome addition to the neighborhood — you’ve got to try it!“

“I’m happy to support The Backhouse. I’ve ordered from them twice now, the $450 deluxe platter, and both times were excellent. You can tell the owner takes pride in her preparation, selects high quality fish, and the rice is cooked and proportioned perfectly. Most importantly, you get to enjoy delicious meal in the comforts of your own home.
Ordering through their website may seem daunting, but it’s actually pretty straight forward. They are also accommodating as I selected the wrong date and corrected with a link they provided. I didn’t have to call or speak to anyone. Their ordering website is intuitive and well designed.“
