“So it was my birthday, and I really wanted sushi. There is no dearth of quality sushi restaurants in San Francisco, however almost all of them are omakase – and to be honest, I am not a huge omakase fan (and I speak Japanese, have lived in Japan, and have consumed sushi all over the world – omakase does not necessarily mean better). Kuma’s execution and fish quality is some of the best I have had in the US in a long time. I dined with my mother, who is a Hamachi kama fan, and she said it was one of the best she has ever had. The atmosphere is no frills, and there were only two staff working the floor, one was I believe the manager – but service was attentive. Overall, this is probably my favorite new place to have non-omakase sushi in the city. Definitely recommend, and you definitely need a reservation.“

“Five stars. My son and I had the Omakase experience at Akiko's in San Francisco, and it was hands down the best sushi we've ever had. Every course was beautifully presented, incredibly fresh, and packed with flavors that exceeded our expectations. The chefs' attention to detail and craftsmanship were evident in every bite. The service was equally outstanding, warm, attentive, and perfectly paced from start to finish. The entire evening felt like a true culinary experience rather than just dinner. If you're looking for an unforgettable Omakase in San Francisco, Akiko's is absolutely worth it. Five stars. We can't wait to come back.“

“Tried the sushi here with a few different rolls, including one with tempura shrimp and another with spicy tuna. The textures worked well together, and the flavors were nicely balanced. I liked that the menu had both familiar choices and a few more creative options“

“The customer service is outstanding and the quality of sushi serves were delicious. The Chef prepared the plates well. I don’t think I can return to a regular Japanese restaurant after this experience. 😁“

“I think the 4.7 Google rating for this place is too high. Four stars is more like it. The food was mostly good, but there were a few items that were not so great. We got the sashimi sampler. The barracuda and tuna sashimi were excellent and flavorful even without soy sauce. The aji and sea bream sashimi were fine, but had less flavor. The yellowtail sashimi was downright sour and not fresh. We also ordered some small plates. The agedashi tofu was very nice. The grilled scallops featured an impressive presentation (scallops in their shell cooking in a bubbling broth over a small fire that died down right when we finished the dish) and a tender texture, but ultimately the taste was bland. The assorted tempura was fine although I thought the batter could have been lighter. The house salad was large and fresh – a good deal. We finished with some skewers – shrimp, chicken, zucchini, and mushrooms. The skewers ranged from solid to good. Beyond the food, we thought the service was friendly and competent. The atmosphere, however, left something to be desired. The restaurant reeked of cleaning fluid and the floor was sticky.“

“Great sushi, perfectly prepared and presented. So glad I walked a few more blocks to go there. Small with a very friendly staff (my 2 Buddhi’s) made for enjoyable experience. Come to town at least once a year; plan to be back.“

“During a difficult time in our lives, we were visiting The Roll often and it became a place of comfort and familiarity. Whether we stopped in after a hospital visit or grabbed dinner before heading back, it was one of the few places that brought us a sense of normalcy when life felt anything but that.
Tony, the owner, was kind, welcoming, and genuine from the moment we met him. Without ever knowing what we were going through, he consistently greeted us with the same warmth, humor, and care every time we visited. Those small acts of kindness meant more than he could have known.
The food is always fresh, high quality, and always delicious, but what made The Roll truly special to us was the people. Tony and his team created a space where we could take a breath, enjoy a great meal, and feel cared for, even if just for an hour.
Thank you, The Roll, for being there for us without even realizing it. We will always remember your kindness. Highly recommend the amazing food, drinks, and hospitality.“

“Very tasty place. It is a little bit aside from deep touristic places and usually visited by locals. The staff is very kind and prices are quite good for this quality. There are places to sit inside and outside. There are infrared wormers outside for cold evenings. The only concern is the working hours, only few hours during the day.“

The service was really good, friendly and efficient!“

“The food was nice. Very tasty. I like when there is a sampler platter on sushi menus so you can let the chef pick. They had 6 of these and a sushi bowl. I went with combo A. I was pleased with the choice. They have the Kurosawa Kimoto sake here. I love thise stuff. I get the 300ml. I'd get the 720, but the fiance would probably be critical of that decision.“

“It’s cozy, good and fast service and the food is high quality. We got the top secret and hamachi carpaccio which I would definitely get again, then for main dish we ordered curry rice (little bit of spice, nice crispy pork) and mentaiko yaki udon (flavorful, not too heavy noodles were perfectly cooked) which were good but would want to try other items that also looked good on the menu. Definitely recommend!“

“So many delicious affordable options, it makes you want to order the entire menu. We got miso soup, cucumber salad, wok fried green beans, the tuna poke and the garden roll. Everything was so good and well worth the month. I wish the portions were bigger but for the price you really can't complain.“

“Tried the sushi here with a few different rolls and a side of takoyaki. The takoyaki was crispy outside and soft inside, and it paired nicely with the lighter sushi. I liked having a mix of textures throughout the meal. Everything was satisfying without feeling overly heavy“

“My husband had surgery this week and was craving old-school Japanese restaurant fare. We definitely found it here. He was thrilled with the Tempura Appetizer and Tonkatsu entree, and I thought the Melted in Your Mouth sushi roll was just perfect. We’re so lucky this place is so close!“

“Food was good but a bit more pricey than other Japanese sushi restaurants in terms of quantity and price. The service is good. The waitress is very attentive. We were seated at the section separating from the main seating area which is close to the door, so it was a bit cold because of the wind on that day. Overall is good but not great but will come back once in a while! :)“

“Late night, delicious sushi (one of the best salmon sashimi I've had), delicious sweet sake, and the host was super nice, you wouldn't think she's working a late shift 🥲
A little pricey (1 sake, 1 sashimi, 1 specialty roll, 1 basic roll = $80) , but is anything around here reasonable...?“

“We just moved into the neighborhood and have been trying out new local restaurants — and wow, we’re so glad we found this place! This was our second time coming in, and it honestly reminded us why we couldn’t wait to come back.
The food is fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. You can taste the difference — they even use real crab, which is one of the many reasons we love it here. Everything we’ve tried so far has been delicious and perfectly cooked.
The service makes the experience even better. Kyle and Jennifer were both so friendly, attentive, and full of great energy. They really made us feel welcome. In the kitchen, Chefs Gary and Jimmy bring not only amazing cooking skills but also great humor and personality — you can feel how much they care about what they do.
There’s something about this place that just feels like home — warm, relaxed, and full of good vibes. It’s definitely become one of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, and we can’t wait to come back again soon!“

“It's hard to beat $2 nigiri!
Super cute sushi spot that serves up a too good to be true happy hour and vegan sushi! They do have actual fish and alternative fish :)
Their happy hour is daily from 5-9pm which is amazing and they have an ayce vegan sushi deal as well. They have more than just the $2 nigiri in their happy hour menu, you can also get rolls and hand rolls!
I thought their fish quality was fresh and the nigiri was delicious! The rice was a little heavy but overall super enjoyable! My favorite was definitely the toro and saba. I also really enjoyed their blue crab handroll. I was too full to try their rolls but I could smell the lion king roll and it smelled delicious.
Parking can be tough but it's in a charming neighborhood. Staff and service were awesome! I would definitely come back!“

“The food here was definitely the highlight. Everything tasted pretty fresh and flavorful, and overall I would rate the food about 4/5. The ingredients seemed good quality and the dishes were enjoyable.
However, the service was a bit disappointing. The staff did their job, but they didn’t feel very welcoming or friendly. There wasn’t much interaction beyond the basics, and with the price point here, I expected a more warm and attentive experience.
The atmosphere was also just okay. It wasn’t fancy or fine dining, but it also didn’t really give a strong Japanese vibe either. The environment felt a bit mixed and not very memorable.
Overall, I’m giving 4 stars mainly because the food was good. If I rated the experience as a whole (food + service + atmosphere), it would probably be closer to 3/5. Still worth trying if you care mostly about the food.“
