“In the gritty underbelly of New Haven, where the Ivy League pretensions clash with the raw hunger of the streets, there's this unassuming joint called Menya-Gumi that's slinging bowls of ramen that could make a grown man weep. I wandered in, half-expecting another watered-down noodle farce, but goddamn, that Tori Paitan hit like a thunderclap—creamy chicken broth so rich and layered it whispers secrets of slow-simmered bones and subtle dashi, topped with a gooey ajitama egg that oozes like forbidden sin, tender chashu pork that melts on the tongue, and noodles with just the right chew to fight back. It's not some bullshit fusion gimmick; it's honest, soul-stirring washoku that transports you to a Tokyo back alley, minus the jet lag.
But don't sleep on the rest of the menu, because this place is a goddamn treasure trove. The dim sum? Those shrimp har gow are plump, translucent miracles, bursting with sweet oceanic brine and a hint of chive that cuts through like a switchblade. Pork and shrimp siu mai follow up with that perfect steamed bounce, savory as hell. Dive into the Hong Kong side for curry fish balls that pack a spicy, bouncy punch—street food elevated to art—or the giant shrimp wontons in red oil, slick with chili heat and pork-shrimp umami that lingers like a bad habit you don't want to kick. The katsu sando? Crispy fried pork on fluffy bread, simple yet profound, like a love letter to comfort. And that egg sando—Kewpie-smeared, pillowy perfection—it's the kind of thing you'd kill for after a bender.
The owner's got that quiet fire, family-run vibe that screams authenticity, portions generous enough to satisfy the hungriest bastard, and prices that won't gut your wallet. Menya-Gumi isn't just food; it's a visceral experience, a reminder that in a world full of mediocre slop, there's still places where the broth tells a story worth savoring. If you're in New Haven and you miss this, you're a fool. Five stars, no question—go now, before the crowds ruin it.“

“A huge thank you to Taichi for collaborating with the Yale Veritas Search to offer a Yale student winner their own “celebrity boba card” (one free daily boba for the semester). It has been a pleasure to work them in this collaboration, and to highlight a great New Haven boba location with a really amazing staff (with a special thanks to Ken)!
We encourage everyone to try them out!“

“Came here for the first time and honestly loved it. I do not remember our server’s name but he was amazing and made the experience even better. The atmosphere was great and had a really fun and comfortable vibe.
The bun appetizers were an awesome way to start. The pork belly bun was easily the best one. I also tried the Korean fried chicken bun with gochujang, daikon carrots, and kewpie, but it did not come close to the pork belly. The pork belly with hoisin, pickled daikon carrots, and kewpie was incredible.
The red oil dumplings were awesome. I loved the sauce and the garnishes. It leaned a little more on the vinegar side but in a way I really enjoyed.
The ramen Tonkotsu 3.0 was very tasty with a lot of depth in the broth.
The pho was more of a southern style pho, slightly sweeter, but you can really taste how long the broth has been simmering. I love tendon and tripe and while they only had tripe available to add, it was still very good.
Overall the food, service, and atmosphere were all on point. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.“

“Anaya sushi is the old York Street Noodle House!!!! The sushi was just ok but the Spicy wok basil noodles were exactly as I remember them! The service was ok, no problems, one roll took a long time to come and once we got our food we did not see a server for a while. Would go back for noodles!“

“Stopped in for lunch and everything was delicious. The Bibimbap beef was amazing they made it spicy just how I like it. The bulgogi rice bowl was also really tasty, and the ramen was great too.
If you’re in Hamden and looking for good Japanese and Korean-style food, definitely swing by Donburiya Cafe and grab a bite. Highly recommend!“
