I like Natty’s Jamaican Soul Food, and although I don’t visit often, I stop by every now and then when I’m in the area. My usual go-to is the oxtails, and that’s exactly what I ordered this time.

I got the lunch special with oxtails, rice and peas, and cabbage.

Let’s start with the food. The oxtails were good, as usual. The rice and peas and cabbage were decent, too. The portion size was what you’d expect for a lunch special, although I wouldn’t have complained about a little more oxtail! Overall, I have no major complaints about the food, and I’d rate it a solid 4 out of 5.

Unfortunately, the customer service was a different story.

I wanted to make a couple of substitutions, but after I placed my order, the woman at the counter simply said okay and walked away. There was no opportunity to clarify my request or ask about alternatives. I was left confused until I realized she was preparing my order.

I also wanted to try the jerk dressing again, but I wasn’t asked if I wanted anything additional. You might ask why I didn’t speak up, but good customer service involves communication, asking questions, and making customers feel welcome. There was even an opportunity to upsell.

As someone who has owned a business, I understand that everyone can have a bad day. But customers don’t know what you’re going through, and the way they’re treated can determine whether they return.

I drove a little out of my way because I knew I could count on Natty’s for good oxtails. And the food delivered! I’ve even recommended this place to other people because of its oxtails.

But spending $23–$24 on a plate of food is no small expense, and I have other places where I can spend my money.

Final verdict: The food gets 4/5, but the customer service gets 0/5 from me on this visit. I still enjoy the oxtails, but the service definitely made me reconsider how readily I’ll recommend this establishment in the future.
