Vegan birria tacos (made with perfectly seasoned mushrooms) were excellent, though I have to admit the consomé wasn't, unfortunately. But the vegan soul plate was all good. The fried hearts of palm were tasty and crunchy, the mac and cheese was creamy and not too heavy, the sweet potatoes were Thanksgiving-y, and the greens did their job. And the hibiscus and ginger tea I ordered was delicious! I just wish it was less than a 40-minute drive for me, but what can you do?“

We were there for a huge social club banquet, and the place was absolutely buzzing. The room was packed, the energy was high, the bartenders were clearly having a great time behind the bar, and the Shirley Temples were flowing like someone accidentally leaned on the soda gun for three straight hours.

Now before I even get into our night, I need to acknowledge another reviewer who once said this place is “2 Legit 2 Quit.”

After spending the evening there, I can confirm that statement is scientifically accurate. Atmosphere? Legit. Staff? Legit. Food? Legit. Hallways? Surprisingly legit. Carpets? Still legit. Bathrooms? Also holding strong in the legit department. Whoever wrote that review clearly did a full building inspection tour, and honestly I respect the thoroughness.

But the real MVP of the night was Kevin John, our table server.

Kevin John might be the quietest hardest-working server in the Midwest. No big announcements, no dramatic entrances — just pure efficiency. The man worked like a hospitality ninja.

Every time we looked down, more food plates had magically appeared on the table. No one asked. No one waved him down. Kevin John had already taken care of it. Plates cleared, new plates delivered, everything running like a perfectly organized banquet machine.

At one point we all realized something incredible: we had never once needed to ask for anything all night. Kevin John had already handled it before the thought even finished forming in our heads.

The man wasn’t just serving the table — he was quietly running a one-man food distribution operation while making it look effortless.

Between the fun crowd, the lively bartenders, the endless Shirley Temples, the legit carpets apparently approved by previous reviewers, and Kevin John making sure our table stayed well fed all night long, the entire event was fantastic.

If you’re hosting a banquet, party, or celebration, The Mayfield absolutely knows how to do it right.

“Spotted the CHKN BOX truck parked in the Loop during my lunch hour and finally gave it a try. The hype is definitely real. I got the spicy fried chicken sandwich box which comes with massively seasoned fries and a soda. The chicken was crazy crispy outside and super juicy inside, with just the right amount of kick. The hall is not the best for sound reinforcement as you will need a separate rig pointed to where the main entrance is to ensure you will have even coverage for all patrons. However, it is a minor detail that with the right professional shouldn't be a problem. The catering was very good and the space looked very nice. “I had high hopes since this company was referred by a trusted caterer that I used many times, but my experience with Outside the Box was horrible. We hired this company for a repass immediately following the funeral. They finally showed an hour and an half late to the funeral home. Which means my grieving family didn't eat and waited for over 40mins after final viewing. I received no heads up and if we hadn't reached out to see what was going on, they never would have let me know that my order would not be arriving on time. I missed portions of the service worried about if we would receive our delivery for the repass. When we contacted the drivers to see why they hadn't arrived they were supposed to be 15mins away which turned into approx 40mins after the funeral services had ended. I asked to speak with the owner and was connected right away. She apologized for the inconvenience, said she would refund the delivery fee, and continued to ensure me this situation was not my fault. This response confused me on how my order not being delivered could be my fault in the first place. Also, I am still not sure exactly what the real issue was as I received conflicting stories from the owner and the delivery guys. The food was luke warm by the time it arrived,was set up, and ready to serve to the family. Some of my family did not even get to eat since the food had not arrived. The food was just ok. I will say that when the delivery guys showed up they were apologetic, set up right away, and were polite. 5 days after the funeral I still had not received a follow up phone call or communication to confirm my refund or just to express a sincere apology/thank you. I called today to follow up, speak with the owner and reiterate our experience. I was again told this was not my fault and she apologized again. When I asked next steps and time frame for refund, she said I would receive an email once she processed the refund. She was driving at that moment and couldn't give any specific information. Unfortunately, I do not recommend Outside The Box Catering and Events. I hope this helps even one family not go through the horrible experience.“

“It's a shame that there are so few of these delis left in the area; there used to be three or four along a couple of miles of Archer down here (including Bobak's), but I guess the demographics no longer supports them. I smiled when I noticed they actually have wooden barrels of kapusta and pickled cukes wedged into a rear corner.They have all different kinds of fresh pierogi and, for such a small space, a pretty good sausage/meat selection. Tiffany is incredibly helpful in talking through menu options, setup, and making the ordering process very easy through their online portal. Each time, the food has arrived on-time (or even early) - with a phone call to let me know they've arrived. I really appreciate that Rome's Joy can do anything from sandwiches to more formal cocktail food. The items come very nicely plated with pretty garnishes, so it all looks fresh and inviting to guests - and amazingly delicious!“
