“Haven’t had fish & chips in a long time and the folks at this shop satisfied my cravings. Found in a small, unassuming plaza, this family-owned business is slinging out perfectly fried fish and spuds.
The folks who run this establishment are very welcoming and make you feel at home. The atmosphere here is nostalgic. It feels like I’m in my family’s kitchen from my childhood.
I ordered the halibut and chips for myself, got cod and chips for my brother, and we shared a calamari and gravy. Food was pretty good. Fish tasted buttery and delicate. Batter was thin, crispy, and flavourful. NOT overly greasy, major news! Loved the thick cut fries. The gravy really took them to the next level. Portion sizes are pretty big and these prices are insanely reasonable!
I highly recommend McCowan Fish & Chips; support small businesses! One if my favourite spots in Scarbs now. I will be back!“

“Absolutely delicious from start to finish. The portions were fantastic, the food tasted fresh, and the batter was perfectly light. The service was great, and the quiet atmosphere, with plenty of loyal regulars, made it feel special. The Scottish influence really sets it apart from other fish & chips restaurants in Toronto. We’re thrilled to have found our new go-to spot. Highly recommend!“

“I used to think fish and chips were defined by the greasiness on my tongue and the inedibility of their chips. I’ve tried the dish on many occasions, but never found one that tasted just right. I think this place comes close to very very good. It doesn’t have the greasy feel that plagued so many of my previous consumptions, the batter isn’t too thick nor too thin, and most of all, I genuinely wanted to eat the chips. Definitely coming back the next time I’m in the area.“

“I just recently found out about this GEM of a place. I don't normally like rice but, Lilis rice is fabulous as is all of the food here. Generous portions and excellent prices.“

“Owner is super friendly. Awesome guy!
The fish and chips are sooo good. The fish is super crispy and delicious. Please get the gravy🙏
I didn’t love the poutine. I feel like the cheese took over the taste of the gravy but I heard it’s popular.
We’ve had dine in and take out. Yes the takeout does not travel well but that goes for anything crispy.“

“Food was very good, but what truly made the experience special was the “”””waitresses””””Their behavior was exceptionally respectful, warm, and professional. They treated guests with genuine kindness, beautiful manners, and constant attention, creating such a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere that you naturally want to return just to experience that level of service again. The quality of their hospitality easily matched and even surpassed the quality of the food.“

“You guys have to check this place out. The service was great and super quick. Charlene was awesome. Food is always delicious especially their halibut and everytime I’ve gone it’s always consistent. Their tartar sauce is literally the best and they have amazing specials.“

“I've been coming to Carbon Bar and Grill for years! The food is incredible (especially their wings, burgers, and fries). The staff have always been kind, attentive, and accommodating (especially-so for large parties). Definitely recommend this spot for a meal with the family or a drink with friends.“

“I don't think it's fair to give this place low ratings for not meeting the superb standard that was set by the previous owner. This place is not a franchise.
I went for dinner on late Sunday night. The restaurant looks old and not very well lit. As other reviewers have mentioned, the restaurant is run by only one staff. He tried to make my dining experience comfortable: offering counters with a wider seatings and turned on additional lights while I read the menu.
I ordered the halibut fish and chips, and the fried fish checks all the boxes. It is not dry, flaky, not over-battered, and have fair portion size. Fries can get a bit dry after a few minutes, but I was allowed to use as much condiments as I desired with the large squeeze bottle. The tartar sauce is standard to
the majority's taste bud - not overly sour or sweet.
Sure this place may no longer be the "hidden gem" or "the local's favourite", but it still has its own charm and imperfection like any locally own restaurant. It offers budget option (the lunch size halibut) which are all under $20. It runs from 7am to 9pm everyday. It is halal friendly. The dining area is rustic but good for those who wants to have a quick yet decent meal without sitting among the crowd (something that seems harder to avoid in Markham as times goes on).
I will eat here again whenever I get a craving for fish and chips.“
