“Our son's wedding reception was held here, and it was our first time visiting. I was being a bit nosy about the basement when a gentleman who worked there noticed and kindly asked if we’d like to take a peek. Thank you again — that small gesture showed how much you care about your visitors’ experience. During the reception, a family with three young kids started to get a little bored. That same gentleman came out with a basket of brand-new Matchbox cars and gave each child one. Wow! What a thoughtful and above-and-beyond thing to do. “Update 2+ years later.. more words. Quality is just as good as our first time here. The fried chicken is maybe the greatest on the planet. Crispy outside, juicy inside like something that you'd see in an advertisement - but you actually get it. I had the steak, tenders, broccoli casserole and mashed. I didn't need all that food but I couldn't stop eating. Heather is a freaking machine behind the bar and the staff is a well oiled machine. Will definitely be back sooner rather than later this time. “Went on a busy Friday night but hostess was able to accommodate myself and two daughters. I was in a rush and was pleasantly surprised by the speed of service by the wait staff and kitchen. Everyone was pleasant, food was excellent (kids had burgers and fries and I had the chicken sandwich). Had a long drive home and we arrived at 7:15 and left by 7:50 with full bellies, fun atmosphere, great staff… which was ideal! Highly recommended!“

“We just celebrated our Dover Area High School graduate this past Saturday (5/31/25) at the Roosevelt Tavern, and everything—from the food to the atmosphere to the service—was absolutely FANTASTIC.

What made the day even more meaningful is the personal connection we have with this place. The father of my children, Edward “Peewee” Green, was a chef here many years ago under the previous owner, Bob Schimmel. Sadly, he passed away in November of 2012. Though my kids were only 4 and 5 years old at the time, many patrons still fondly remember him and speak so highly of his time at the Roosevelt.

What we didn’t expect—what truly left us speechless—was the incredible gesture from the current owner. Unbeknownst to us, he had held onto one of Peewee’s old chef coats for the past 15 years, and he gifted it to our graduate during the celebration. That thoughtful, deeply touching act gave our kids a priceless piece of their father’s legacy—a physical connection to a man they’ve heard so much about, but lost too soon.

We are forever grateful for that moment. It meant the world to me and to our family. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.“

“About a year ago, I went to John Wright Restaurant for Sunday brunch with a group of friends. I didn’t know what to expect, but the moment I arrived, I was struck by the beautiful waterfront scenery and the stunning, rustic building. Inside, that old-world charm blends perfectly with an upscale dining vibe, giving the place a truly special and unique energy. The brunch was absolutely delicious—so many options, including my personal favorite, eggs Benedict. Fast forward to last night: I stopped in for happy hour with a friend, and we grabbed seats at the bar. It was surprisingly comfortable and not overcrowded at all. The two bartenders were fantastic—warm, funny, and attentive. And the cocktails… OH MY GOSH. Just try them. You’ll thank me later! We ordered the calamari and crab risotto small plates, and they were so good that we immediately ordered a second round of the exact same thing. From a relaxed Sunday brunch, to after-work apps and cocktails, to a special dinner out—John Wright Restaurant gets a solid 10/10 from me. 🍽️“

“Be careful if going here. It looks like they are having real issues with trouble makers, which can happen with any tavern along the river. About 10 days ago they confronted a person outside who refused to pay. That guy pulled a gun on the employee and threatened to shoot them in the head. Look online, you'll see the news story. We went there with another couple anyway for supper aware of the situation that possibly the management wasn't able to keep the trouble out of the place. Within minutes Courtney had our drinks at the table and placed our food orders ... and then some white trash at the bar left out a super loud screech or whistle looking for attention. It was bad. Then he did it again a few minutes later and left. One more time and I'd have gotten involved. The owner needs to hire some beefy enforcement right now to keep a handle on this or the place is going to get a reputation like the Bainbridge Inn as a good place to raise hell and start a fight. NOT date night atmosphere.“

“My neighbor took me here, it's my first time eating here. We had the potato skins with seafood, & I had the mini salad, crabcake & fries. There were so many items on the menu, I couldn't decide, especially after viewing the photos on Facebook. Our waitress was VERY busy, it took a little while for service, but worth the wait! “The dining area was empty and we were seated and served right away. The mushroom swiss burger was great and came with chips. A separate entree are fries with old bay seasoning. They were great and the portions were enough for several people. Prices were reasonable. The bathrooms are difficult to find and located in an area that appears to be for employees.“

“I will admit, I had low expectations but this place surprised me. Chicken tenders are breaded in-house, and were crispy and seasoned well. Pizza was well sauced, and tasted great. Service was promt and attentive. I will be back to try some other menu items.

“We went on 2/8/25. Staying at the Hampton inn for a dance comp. Our waiter, unfortunately l, didn’t catch his name was absolutely AMAZING! More people kept getting added to our party, he, without hesitation, added more tables and chairs. He took our orders and separated the checks without us even asking. “Arrived in town for a short stay from Florida. The minute we arrived we were greeted by professional and young college kids at the hostess stand. We waited for 10 minutes while our table was assigned. Perfect table on the terrace facing the 18th hole. Sarah our hostess from Penn state was a joy to get to know. We all ordered from the huge menu selection and couldnt decide what to order. We saw The table next to us and the presentation looked amazing. We finally ordered steaks and salmon as our meal with delicious drinks. Perfect Saturday night at a great venue in York Pa. Keep up the great work Shaun Conway and your team. We will be back. “Came into this place on a whim today, and SO glad I did! The thin crust pizza was amazing - brought home half and it crisped right back up when I reheated it. Also had a cheese steak Stromboli which was delish. The Italian sub I had needed more meat and cheese inside of it, but good flavors. The waitress was super friendly and attentive. “Always love their food, worked there years ago back when it was crazy fun , but the food is still really good was craving my favorite chicken quesidillas and surprised my daughter , always easy to order and pick up if you don't have time to dine in . Plus they serve breakfast all day and all night long. Always a 24 hour go to spot.

Kid-friendliness: They are great with kids and when my kids were little and used to tey to act wild noone ever complained. I know they used to give out crayons for coloring.

“It's an old school feel type restaurant mostly older folks. The waitress and other people working were very nice they checked on me consistently. The interior of the restaurant is very very bland. Other than that the food came out in about 8 minutes and it was great the pancakes were nice and big the bacon was cooked perfect and she kept filling up my coffee.“
