“This is our go to Chinese restaurant and has been for about 15 years. We always order the boneless spare ribs, pork fried rice, beef and broccoli, and the steamed dumplings with the most delicious dumpling sauce I’ve ever had. You’ve gotta try it!“

“I haven’t always had the best luck with Chinese food in the Hampton Roads area, especially in Portsmouth, but China Ocean has consistently been one of the better options for us.

We’re vegan, so I can only speak to the vegetable and tofu dishes, but we’ve ordered from them several times and it has always been solid. Nothing overly fancy, just good, reliable Chinese takeout.

But our most recent order was on another level. We got the vegetable lo mein, vegetable fried rice, mixed vegetables, and General Tso’s tofu, and everything was amazing — hot, fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. It wasn’t just “good enough”; it actually felt inspired.

I don’t know what changed in the kitchen, but whatever it was, they need to keep it up. Someone put some real care and love into that food. They put their foot in it, as they say.

“First time here, on a slow Tuesday evening. The lady taking our order was nice and very patient as we read the menu. Food came out very quickly! Orange chicken combo came with a good sized spring roll, and everything was hot and tasty. My husband didn't like his chicken fried rice, said the coating wasn't crunchy enough, but I tried some and thought it was ok. Crab rangoons were nice and crispy, and flavorful inside.“
