“Was super happy with our dinner at Hippo. Every dish was delicious. The brussel sprouts and cauliflower starters had excellent flavors. All the pastas we tried had incredible depth of flavor without being overly heavy or greasy. The hippo rolls and table focaccia were excellent and the chicken thighs were to die for. Only thing that was lackluster was the passion fruit gelato. Fun vibe, lots of seating, and great service!“

“Food, wine, service and vibes were exceptional! We made resys for a wine night and the outdoor seating was cozy, with a heated lamp keeping us warm. Our server was sweet and helped us sample some wines - we chose an orange wine and sparkling wine which both paired perfectly with the food.

For food, highly rec the mentaiko spaghetti, fries with yuzu aoili, chicken wings, and citrus salad! Dessert is a must - loveee the hojicha tres leches and black sesame rice krispy.

Portions are small, but perf for sharing with friends and wine selection is lovely.“

“I’ve never had a bad time here. Even though it’s a place that’s mostly people going with friends, I’ve never felt unwelcome going by myself. The workers are nice and the drinks are made strong and cold the way they should be. It’s a chill vibe. They don’t do stuff like karaoke, so if you want a party kinda place this wouldn’t be ideal, but if you enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, then it’s perfect.“

“Beautiful bar. Modern with a home feel. The ambiance is very chill. Large and wide open window on one side gives you a good view of Sunset Blvd. opposite is the patio that has the food. You can order via a QR code and get a text when your food is ready. Drink menu is great! Bartenders are friendly.“

“I’ve been eating here through 3 ownerships since the 1970s. I really like the new menu, the outdoor eating area and the bar. The service isn’t 5 star but it’s good as it ever was and I’m fine with it. Unfortunately Ihad a very lousy customer service incident on the phone tonight after they botched my delivery order. I ordered grilled cheese sandwich and onion rings. Postmates delivered matzoball soup and rings. Johnny’s customer service lady (didn’t offer name) and the manager refused all responsibility for the wrong item they mispacked; she told me to take it up with Postmates. OK, but meanwhile can I get my sandwich that Johnny’s failed on? “Take it up with Postmates.” When I questioned that logic from a customer service perspective she said “you’re failing to understand!” and told me “don’t get an attitude with me!” I replied “an attitude with YOU?” and she hung up on me. Come on, Johnny’s, this whole thing started with your mistake. Accept responsibility and make it right. Don’t blame delivery. Just make it right.“

“Came here for dinner with a friend and was blown away by the quality and craftsmanship that goes into each dish served here. The appetizers were perfectly portioned and bursting with flavor. Our main dishes were also mind-blowing good, with both of us remarking how much we enjoyed the food several times throughout our meal. “I’m a tourist and have only been here once, but I had a great experience. The bartender was friendly, and it was a fun nightlife experience being surrounded by lots of other queer ladies. We need more spaces for sapphic women like these. Yeah there was a cover charge and mandatory tips, but it’s important for the staff and venue to make money. I thought the charges were totally reasonable, and I have no complaints“

We priced out a ton of venues, particularly in Los Feliz/Silver Lake where we live, and Spare Room was hands down the best option and worth the 'schlep' from our side of town. Great cocktails, stellar pre-order food options (you can order there but for bigger groups it's worth pre-ordering), the bowling was a super fun activity to keep people entertained, and all of the servers were very attentive and friendly. “This place is always packed, even on weeknights. It’s a testament to the beverages and service. Drinks menu rotates so there’s always something new and interesting to try. You can also always get a classic cocktail as well. Beer and wine are also served here. There is a regular food menu with larger portions from opening until about 9 or 10 pm when they switch to their late-night menu which consists of small plates to pick at. Theres plenty of heat lamps outside for when it’s cold you can still sit comfortably during the winter.“

When you enter the room, you’re washed over with the charm of the golden age of Hollywood. The Benjamin brings to LA something that it hasn’t had in years: a moving experience.

The cocktails are fantastic! Whether it’s that tropical fizz of The Pornstar or the magical mouthfeel of their tequila-based martini, just trust it, order it; and imbibe on their mixologists imagination.

I insist that you start with their hamachi crudo because Matsuhisa himself would be hard-pressed to serve up something this delicious.

The crab beignets are a whimsical take on the familiar (but stale) crab cake. All the familiar taste (but better) in a perfectly crispy and crunchy one-bite ball. Trust me: eat it in 1 bite.

If you’re lucky enough to have a stab at something off-menu (it was a ribeye when I went), take it. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with the burger. All the flavors. All Americana. Some cowboy. I can’t explain it…it just makes sense.

Did you go to Miami and have Papi Steak’s caviar potato and think “Dang! I wish they had this in LA!” Well have a I got news for you! The twice baked potato with caviar at The Benjamin is one of the funnest gastronomical experiences you can have!

Lastly, and perhaps…most importantly…..COOKIES AND CREAM. I’ve never seen this as a dessert option anywhere else, but after having this I can’t wrap my mind around why it’s not on every single menu. It was….and I mean this from the bottom of my heart….a revelation. I have dreamt about this. I long for this. When I get lonely and write in my diary, this is what I write about. Order it. Thank me later.

“Neighborhood spot attached to a pastrami place. Closes a little early and errs on the pricey side considering its proximity to excellent (also pricey) late night food. Absolutely beautiful interior always playing old movies and current sports. Insanely underused and gigantic patio outside with a roaring firepit and plenty of tables. I really hope more people start hanging out here! It's pretty silent on weekdays and I've never seen it packed.“
