“Funke does many things right, yet still manages somehow to feel both warm but not inviting at the same time.

It’s odd to me because I recently met Chef Evan Funke and he seemed to be a super nice and warm guy(and clearly very talented), yet his spirit seems to not shine as bright as it could in this particular environment.

A protege of Wolfgang Pucks from back in the day, he himself has become quite a celebrity chef with hundreds of thousands of followers on IG, and all the other things: book, tv appearances, etc…

I believe he’s considered the “Pasta God of California!”

While I have yet to try his other concepts, Mother Wolf (Hollywood) and Felix Trattoria(Venice Beach) Funke is his newest addition to his portfolio of eateries, if not a huge departure in menu from the other two; freshly made authentic Italian pastas and elevated pizzas and animal proteins with a thoughtful bar and wine list. It’s all very good.

The standouts are the squash blossoms and pizza for me, and olive oil infused craft cocktail, but I have yet to try the pastas so cannot comment.

I’m giving this a 4/5 because I can’t help but feel that Funke can’t decide what experience it truly wants to give you. As I said, it’s warm, but not necessarily inviting.

All that said, add it to your list for fine-dining in Beverly Hills. It’s worth going for the open-air rooftop bar and squash blossoms alone.“

“I went with a large group and I think everyone but me like their entrées way better than I did. I really think maybe I just made a wrong taste choice. I went for a mushroom ravioli with a cream sauce. I have to say the service was excellent. It’s a cute little restaurant. You probably wanna make a reservation if you’re going there, the bread is incredible. It’s so so yummy. I did enjoy the appetizers. I was not impressed though by the Caesar salad I was with five other people and they all loved their trace. I think I just made a poor choice. I would recommend it and even for a romantic night or dinner.“

“What an incredible hidden gem! We were craving Italian food and decided to check out Al Italiano. Walked in on a Tuesday night a little before closing. Eddie and the owner Robert greeted us warmly. The menu has some great options and we were indecisive what to order. Our waiter Eddie is a first class professional and answered all our questions with patience and in details. His recommendations were amazing. We ordered Eggplant Parmesan, Veal Piccata, Children’s cheese pizza, Salumiere pizza and their homemade Tiramisu. Everything was excellent and so tasty. The whole experience at Al Italiano was outstanding and unforgettable. Robert is a great business owner who actually cares and treats you like family. His whole staff is very respectful and helpful. “This has been my family’s go to restaurant for decades. Every time I go here, I am hit with nostalgia. Most birthdays and special occasions were spent here. Since I live out of state now, I always have to stop at chi chi's whenever I visit California. The plain cheese pizza is the best pizza hands down. I’ll never find another pizza like it. “I was in town traveling for work and stopped into Bacari Sherman Oaks for dinner. As a party of one, I was able to grab a seat at the bar, where I ended up having an excellent experience. I struck up a conversation with the bartender, Skyler, who was not only super friendly but incredibly knowledgeable about the entire menu.

Since it was my first time there, I asked Skyler to choose the dishes for me and he absolutely nailed it. Every plate was on point.

“Always a huge fan of this spot! Perfect ambiance with a nice buzz of guests but not too noisy. We shared a gorgeous meal of artichoke salad, filet mignon and finished off with a lovely creamy panna cotta with mixed berry coulis. “Food is always good here and service as well. I love the endless soup with their meals. Lunch time is a great bargain. Wish they'd have have the option of the sandwiches coming on Italian bread than just all on the bread sticks but they are still pretty good for the price. I go for the meatball sand because it's a cheaper bargain price and I thought it was much better tasting than the chicken sandwich which was about the same as you'd get at Burger King. My wife and I come to Olive Garden mostly when they have the GET ONE TAKE ONE HOME DEAL. Can't beat that. The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because all their chicken is not that good and is the same yuck kind you can get at any fast food joint. The meatballs are great. But then if you want to add them to you spaghetti dinner, they charge an extra $3 for 3 meatballs or sausage even. Then that makes spaghetti & meatballs come to about $16 and that is overpriced imo. On some visits the spaghetti sauce is caked with thick tomato slices in it and no other options because it's all made that day. Some days the sauce is more meaty and then the next visit tons of too much tomato slices and it's all watery. Also, being a bigger guy, almost every time we've been here, it's been a bit embarrassing being seated at booths that don't fit me and then having to move and I think the host or hostess should know better and know their tables. Otherwise this is a place we go to for lunch and only for dinner when they have the buy one take one home deal.“

Vegetarian options: There are multiple vegetarian options: multiple pastas, salad, and pizza. The Florentine lasagna is particularly tasty, especially with added marinara sauce.

The kitchen is small, so there may be non-veg food in the vicinity of your food.

Dietary restrictions: Cheese is omnipresent; it is an Italian place. I don't believe there is a cheese substitute available.

Parking: It is easy to call in orders in advance for pick up or eating there.

I have visited this place for 20 years. The food has been consistent over time in terms of quality.

I have used LA Lasagna for catering for groups of CSUN students and faculty/staff many times to good reviews.

This is a neighborhood restaurant with good prices, easy parking, pick up, and delivery.

The marinara sauce needs more garlic for me, but there is garlic, red peppers, and Parmesan cheese in shaker bottles.

The fountain sodas offered are Coke products. They also have other cans/2 liter bottles. I don't believe there is beer or wine.

The atmosphere is storefront bright with little ambience, but is clean with friendly service, and accurate orders provided.

I now live 50+ miles away and often stop by when I'm in the SFV near CSUN.

Kid-friendliness: The tables are close together, and the area open, so no mobile toddlers. Otherwise, mellow kids are fine here. If you have fidgeters, get your food to go or delivered for everyone 's sake.

Having had an Italian Chef for a Father, I grew up being able to tell good Italian flavors from a simple dish like Meatballs and Sauce (gravy)! Both were excellent from Sugo! Hot from heat, great texture and fine flavors and plenty of food! I'm looking forward to delving deeply into the menu next time! The rest of the family dinner was a hit with everyone too!
