“Last week stopped by Big Shanty Smokehouse in Kennesaw, Georgia. I’ve been going here for years and always has been one of my favorite places in Georgia. Paul Holden of Willingham's World Champion BBQ recently took over as the new owner in August and excited to see what he continues to bring. He’s top notch pitmaster in the competition world but also has been in the restaurant business as well. I got the brisket which was amazing and also some of their signature Turkey ribs (Friday Special) and of course some Brunswick stew and Mac & Cheese. Everything was very good and will be back soon. Currently they are open Wed-Thursday 11am-2pm & Friday-Saturday 11am-7pm. (So stop by and see them.) Two years ago when we first found Doug's Place, it was just a little hole- in-the-wall place. It has expanded and grown much bigger. But the food remains the same! Today, my husband got country fried steak, 3 sides, and a biscuit. I got the 4 veggie plate and cornbread. An honest review of my food: **Mashed potatoes and gravy...(choice of brown or white, I chose white...would like to have had a little more gravy-it was so good!) REAL mashed potatoes, even had some small lumps! Yummy! **fried Parmesan squash...very tasty **pinto beans...what can I say??? Just like my momma used to cook! Seasoned to perfection! Crumbled some of my cornbread in the pintos. It don't get no better than that! (Excuse my improper English please!) **cole slaw...I wouldn't be lying if I said it's the best I've ever had, including the slaw I make-and I get compliments on mine all the time. **cornbread...not the best I've ever had but pretty darn good! Especially when crumbled in the pintos! When we arrived, the parking lot was full. And the place was full. But still found a corner to ourselves. The staff were all friendly (Anna, our server was very busy, but took great care of us), food portions are ample and the cost very reasonable. Highly recommend!!!!“

“I have been going to this place for years. Food is always sooo good. Service is fast and people are friendly.

There are premade breakfast items that you choose and they add to a to-go container. Everything I’ve had is good. Items are regular breakfast items - eggs (multiple ways), bacon, sausage, grits, French toast, etc.

Location does have a couple of tables to sit at but I’ve never seen anyone sit inside, there are a couple picnic tables outside and we sit there.

“Visiting in town and Googled restaurants near me. My friend wanted Soul Food so we decided to try this restaurant; we were well pleased. We ordered a lot to choose from and eat on for two days. We order fried chicken whole wings with rice and gravy and kale greens, turkey wings with mac n cheese and candied yams, and oxtails with cabbage and collards. The candied yams were not too sweet and paired greatly with the mac n cheese. We loved the kale better than the collards, though both were good. Might mix them next time. Fried chicken was seasoned just right. Only suggestions might be to try to limit the grease when pouring the oxtail gravy over the rice and add some green leaves to the cabbage; it was all white. And those little cornbread muffins tasted like home but wish they were bigger or maybe give two.

Overall we were extremely satisfied. Service was great and atmosphere was fine since this is a to-go spot only. We would go back!

“This location is nice and clean but also terrible at listening and making our orders correct. I bring an elderly parent here at least twice and week and in eight months of visits, our orders have been 100% correct maybe 25% of the time. Something is is ALWAYS wrong or left off. I’m wondering if someone in the kitchen is literally reading challenged or is everyone just not listening. The East Cobb CSC only messed up once in five years of regular visits and that was because of a computer crash.“

“The crust on the catfish is too thick and the pork chops could be breaded lighter maybe without bones. The waitress and the owner are very friendy and food is generally good and tasty. The desert poetions are undersized but I still enjoy the place“

“Being part English, part Caribbean and part Hyderabadi you know I appreciate a damn fine curry, my son found this spot while out and about and took us out for a Monday night curry. The choices were great and I settled on a biriyani with a garlic naan and I wasn't disappointed. The food came out quickly and hot, I had so much I took some away with me. My wife and son had the tikka masala with samosa which they demolished. Thanks Daddy's we will be back - you need some take away menus as the pics on line don't do your food justice.“

We tried two kinds of chicken salad today (Buffalo Barclay and Lauryn's lemon basil) and they were both wonderfully flavored and fresh! We also tried the loaded baked potato soup and brocoli salad. All food was brought to our table quickly and were very tasty! We were very appreciative of how they decorated for Veterans Day and honored veterans with a free meal. We will definitely be returning!
