“We’ve just come back from Al’s #1 Italian Beef on N Wells Street and it absolutely lived up to the hype.

We both went for the wet Italian beef with sweet peppers and a side of fries. The service was incredibly quick and the ambiance had that classic, no-nonsense Chicago feel, relaxed but buzzing, with a real sense of history behind it.

The sandwich was everything we expected and more. Perfectly soaked without falling apart, packed with flavour, and exactly what you want when you’re chasing an authentic Chicago experience. And the fries? Definitely not just a side show. Skin on, seasoned beautifully, with that proper homemade vibe, crisp outside, fluffy inside.

We’re so glad we made Al’s part of our Chicago trip. Another absolute winner!“

“I come here often for Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai iced tea - they make the best of both of these that I’ve had in the city.

The curry chicken banh mi is very good. The lemongrass chicken though was very dry and could use something to make the bites go down easier, but that’s my one and only complaint about anything from here“

“Cool cafe with a bunch of eclectic nicknacks and wall art. I got the goat cheese crostini which comes with a side of roasted tomato relish. It was good but it didn’t blow my socks off. It almost seemed like it was missing just one extra ingredient or garnish to take it to the next level.

I also got the chicken club and it was good. The star of the sandwich was definitely the bread. You can tell this place knows what they’re doing when it comes to making bread.“

“We stopped in on a lark and split the CK1- absolute delight. We didn’t have any particular expectations beyond a hot sandwich, and were very pleasantly surprised. The whole menu looked unusual but good, picked the CK1 and strongly recommend it. For a not-too-heavy lunch, half the sandwich was just right. It came out very hot, we actually let it rest a moment before we could pick it up and eat it, then it was delicious, particularly dipped in the Au jus. We would have come back again if they were open later!“

“This place is a sleeper that makes a great garlic chicken salad sandwich on a dutch crunch bread.

A dutch crunch bread, when baked, has a pillowy inside but the exterior is a crispy crackled crust that looks similar to the bark og a tree/log. And the crunch is second to none!!! This should be used on all sandwiches!!!

The creamy garlic chicken salad has chunks of premium white meat with a hint of garlic, followed by heat from the giardeneria. All this is wrapped up with liberal amounts of cooling shredded lettuce. And the sub sandwich was huge and price point was fairly low at under $13 for this size. Definitely going to come back and try other ones in the future.

The space is small and dark, a bit cramped and many students tend to be socializing or studying. And that makes sense since these prices are relatively less than other similar delis.“

I did try the bacon cheese fries one and wasn’t a fan because the cheese was flavorless.

They proceed to make me a cheesesteak so good I call my friend who lives in Philly and tell him that he’s nothing. “I love Nonnas so much! I’ve tried their sandwiches and soup and they are delicious! I’ve had the cold cut, the drunken chicken, the kale soup and the tomato soup. The sandwiches are perfectly balanced flavors and textures and the soups have so many layers of flavor! They have gluten free bread that is good and not tiny!! And I called and asked what they have that is gf and they can make most of their sandwiches with grilled chicken instead of breaded (I didn’t miss the breading bc there’s so much flavor) and the soup comes with 2 slices of gf bread in place of their baguette. I get delivery and everything is labeled with a gf allergy sticker. Update: try the different mayos that they have they are amazing!“
