“We've not been there since 2017 due to relocation but have nothing but fond memories of Dover Straits. When we bought our house in Grayslake in 1995, our realtor took us there to celebrate. We continued going, mainly for birthdays, anniversaries or impress out of towners, and were never disappointed. We have immediate access to super fresh seafood in Florida but miss the ambiance and supper club vibe Dover Straits provided. Loved that the owners always greeted us like we were worth a million bucks.“

Despite a typically packed Friday evening, our reservation was honored immediately—an efficiency that regulars have come to value at this always-busy establishment. The evening’s only notable drawback began with the seating. As a party of two, we were placed near the bar in a high-traffic area, which, combined with the restaurant’s characteristically high noise level, made for a less intimate dining experience. Service was prompt and capable, though somewhat impersonal. Culinarily, the meal was uneven but largely successful. The walleye fish fry, a dish I had been anticipating, was merely average and carried a slightly fishy note that raised questions about freshness. In contrast, the eggplant and shrimp dishes were well executed and thoroughly enjoyable, reminding us why we return so often. Taken as a whole, this visit reflected the restaurant’s usual strengths with a few minor missteps. While not a standout evening, it was still a solid experience and, consistent with most visits, earns a respectable 4 out of 5.“

“The food here is exceptional, featuring beautifully cuts of fish and my favorite miso and Japanese salad. The quality ingredients and presentation are top-notch. However, the overall experience was disappointing.

The restaurant itself is in a state of disrepair. It’s run-down and not very clean. We arrived around 7 pm on a Saturday, we were seated in the far back corner, near the kitchen and bathroom. To our dismay, there was a cart of dirty dishes right next to our table, emitting a foul odor. It took about 10 minutes for the staff to remove it to the kitchen. Thankfully, we were about to leave when it was finally taken away.

The wait to place our order was another 15 minutes, and it took over an hour to receive our food. We were grateful that we weren’t in a hurry. Despite the long wait, the food was still worth it. However, with so many other great options available, we may have to wait a while before returning.

The bathrooms were also in a state of disrepair. There was plenty of street parking in the front and more in the back. The service was not as friendly and personable as we’ve experienced at other restaurants. We suspect that they were understaffed on the day of our visit.

Overall, this was our second visit to the restaurant, and while we will definitely return for the amazing food, we won’t be doing so anytime soon.“

“This is our family's favorite restaurant for birthdays, anniversaries, dinners with large groups...At this point we've been here probably 10 times and never once have we had a bad experience. Every server goes above and beyond to ensure that you have a WOW experience. The food and drinks are amazing every time. Last night we decided to try somewhere new since we just ate at Primo the previous weekend. The prices were the same yet the service and food did not compare. From now on we'll stick with here, where we know we'll have an amazing experience.“

The difference is lately (last couple months or so)I've noticed a change in the presentation and cleanliness of the restaurant, the morale of the staff, and just the entire energy of this place has changed. Disney bingo is a great example. That place was insanely busy yet everyone was happy, service was great, and the guests didn't suffer because of the volume of business. Then the other day I met the new manager! It all started to make sense. I can't remember her name but she was so cute and professional. “I just had to share how amazing the staff was at helping me out. It was the first time ordering online and I had unknownly put Wasabi in my bowl, which I had unfortunately believed to have been a bad bowl. I was able to communicate with the staff and they were so kind and were able to fix my bowl for me after coming out of work. Absolutely grateful to the staff and love the food, will definitely always comeback :)“

“Love the food here, especially the salt and pepper chicken. But the new coupon promo thet are running isnt going to draw any attention. In fact I just threw mine in the trash when I saw that I needed to make 10 purchases there to save 10 dollars. Thats too many folks, 10 purchases? I bet the average cost, for 1 person is 15 to 25 dollars if you get a side. For 2 people its 25 to 40 if you get a side. Not bad prices at all, but that would mean a customer has to spend around 150 250 dollars for a single person and 250 to 400 for a pair of diners.....that being said, does the 10 dollars off after 10 purchases seem enticing now? Not to mention, if you eat there like 2 times a month, thats 5 months of saving those tickets.....the purpose of the tickets are to draw the customer back, not make them have to come back 10 times for a benefit. If you drop it to 2 purchases over 20 dollars and you get to have 5 dollars off, I bet you will see more of a return. I know I would at least keep the ticket if I only had to go one more time and spend over 20 bucks to actually use the ticket. At my pace, it would be sometime around winter of 2027 before im able to dine here 10 times lol. But again, the food is great!“
