“Needing some real food during an Amtrak stopover, I was thrilled to find this wonderful, old school diner just a block from Union Station. I ordered the mushroom special omelette which came with fantastic, thin-sliced hash browns and a slice of house baked toast. The coffee is also exceptional. I restaurant was bustling and I sat at the counter and got to eat and watch Chicagoans enjoy what has to be an institution. Any time Im in Chicago, I will make sure to make a stop at Lou Mitchell's!“

“Delicious food, excellent service, noisy outside (not Brother’s fault) but inside looked crowded and not as bright on this beautiful day.
Chicken and chorizo skillet was our favorite; thanks to the waitress who recommended we order the skillet version (instead of omelette version). The hash browns at the bottom had a nice crisp, and the dish itself had nice flavor - especially with the red hot sauce.
The steak fajita omelette was also good but humongous, so I didn’t even come close to finishing it (especially since I added a side of bacon).
Heads up: the cappuccino came with a sweet foam on top. Husband’s coffee was constantly refilled.
Service was friendly and attentive even though we were the only ones eating outside.
We were only visiting Chicago but would return to this restaurant. It feels like a local place (ChatGPT helped us find this gem, but I wrote this review myself :)“

“I cannot put into words how wonderful, hospitable and welcoming this place is. I was welcomed in by the owner Samantha, young respectful young lady, she took my order she made me feel at home. I felt as though I was eating brunch at my Abuelita’s home. Thank you Samantha and family for the warm welcome- the red chilaquiles and cafe de olla we’re phenomenal and I will be sure to be back with my babies and husband! I mentioned to Samantha I was treating myself for my birthday and she brought out a cinnamon role with a candle meant the world to me!“

“Went today for the first time. Food was fresh, generous portions, priced right and tasted amazing. I ordered Breakfast Quesadilla. The homemade salsa had some heat to it. Bacon cooked perfect. Best OJ I’ve had in a while. I’ll definitely be back Keep up the great work“

“Wow, this place is AMAZING? Great service, hopping atmosphere, and every single one of our dishes were delicious. “I was a steady customer but will not be returning to this establishment again. Today I asked to sit in a booth and James, the owner said "We're too busy to sit one person in a "big" booth. (I was the only one waiting for a table.) So the waitress wanted me to sit at a table. The "big" booth seats 4. The table they wanted me to sit at also seats 4. The only difference is the booth doesn't hurt my back like the hard chairs do. I'm dying of cancer, which James is aware of, I have enough pain I don't need any more by sitting on hard chairs. Well he won't have to worry about being so "busy" to let someone have some comfort he's got one less patron. I'm done with this place.“

“Good food, ambitiously and beautifully served, but not great. Staff is welcoming but misses important requests such as removing food items that can cause allergic reactions. The place is minimally equipped for a restaurant with such an ambitious food presence, enhancing the notion that food is overpriced: a good remodeling is strongly needed.“

“Food is all homemade ... chilliques are so good with red sauce To die for... The burgers are HUGe.... so delicious.... the fries are like no others and I personally never order fries. So they have to be good.... I did substitute the salad for the fries and was blown away how tasty it was... I mean I'm talking salad right!! Please come visit this beautiful restaurant and tast the real homemade goodness.“

“If you plan to cater or have a dine-in party, ask for Tennessee Hot fried chicken. Ask far in advance. Juicy and tender meat, crispy skin when served straight from the fryer. Flavorful. Chef Larry's off the menu specialty was a hit for our party of 13. BYOB.“

“This diner was small but nice. The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. There was no wait when we arrived about 12pm on a Saturday. Food was delicious I wanted to order everything on the menu. The food didn’t take long to come out maybe 20mins. The atmosphere is nice my only reason for 3 stars was it was a little crammed and cluttered and the bathroom was in the back with the freezer and it was a line. But I would definitely return“

“Food was absolutely fantastic. I’ve eaten here 3 or 4 times before today and it was always good. It does get busy but the wait is not too long. Having said that, service and food quality does not decline. The atmosphere is a very comfortable granny’s diner feel and the staff are all friendly incredibly nice. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!“

“Such a great restaurant. The food is fantastic and the service is great. The food is hot and delicious, you won't be disappointed with what you order. We stumbled upon this place, had breakfast skillets (hot sauce is delicious!) Came back the next day for Cuban sandwich and another skillet. The coquito latte is a must!“

Prices weren't that bad either and watch out for that coffee it will snap you into reality in a good way!“

“My friends and I, had breakfast here today and the service was awesome. I was seated quickly, and had many items, to choose from on their menu. The waiter was super nice and friendly and checked on us a few times to see if we needed anything. The ambiance was great, the food was fresh and a lot of it. I took my leftovers home. “I am from Los Angeles and went to visit family around the corner from Don's. This diner took me back to a time when the food was hearty, well priced, and to die for. I love me some chili from Don's with cheese and onions, all the breakfasts they have, and the cheeseburgers with fries. The patrons were more than happy to make room for our huge party of 9, and the service is just as good. The cooks and servers dishing up great stories and great food. I wish I had a Don's around the corner from my home that I could walk to, any time of the day or night.“

“Flew in from CA for a concert (stayed at the Sonesta nearby) and needed a hearty brunch before my flight back.
First Watch exceeded expectations and over delivered. The place was bustling, we got seated promptly and our server was so nice and was always smiling :) The barbacoa chilaquiles were 11/10 and the french toast was 11/10. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!“

“I’m giving this place a 5 because the food was really good. However, I do have some suggestions at the end of my review.
I had the chilaquiles verdes with chicken. I’m Mexican and I can say the chilaquiles tasted very authentic and delicious. I had a good amount of food, especially chicken and again it was very good.
My husband had the carne asada and it was also very good.
The owner, Don Ernesto was very friendly to everyone who walked in and was accommodating to a customer that asked for his food to be cooked in butter and not vegetable oil.
My suggestion is that the drip coffee not be $3.99 a cup and that they use the same coffee because one cup was good and the other was spicy tasting.
I would come back again and recommend it.“
