“We first found mercy tavern last October! We planned a quick trip again this year and it was on our list of places to return to! We absolutely love the atmosphere, food and amazing drinks! Can’t wait to go back.“

“It’s a lovely setting right by the water, so a fantastic place to go on a sunny day.

Beer-wise I tried three. One of the pilsners was excellent, another was decent, then I tried a NEIPA which I thought was actually pretty poor. So overall a little disappointed in the beers given the reputation this place has, but maybe it was just bad luck. I’d stick to lagers on any future visit.

We also had a pretzel and cheese sauce as a snack and that was very tasty.“

“I am a huge fan of key lime pie and have sampled it at pretty much every opportunity. Each time, I find something that isn’t an A+. The crust is too grainy or crumbly, the bakery has added meringue (which I like on lemon but not lime), or—and this is the most common offender—there is entirely too much lime in the recipe. But the key lime pie I had at Caramel was exceptional in every possible way, especially in its balance of lime flavor. I didn’t try anything else there, so I can’t vouch for the macarons or other goodies, but if you love key lime pie, RUN to this bakery!“

“We met our son and two grandsons for Saturday morning breakfast. Food was good, fast, eggs done perfectly with not too much grease, and generous portions. Staff were excellent. Loved the meal.“

“I love this place. It’s located in the beautiful town of Salem on the water. The setting is perfect. My siblings and I enjoyed appetizers, lunch, cocktails and mocktails at the bar. Great service. One odd thing was that the tv closest to us had an infomercial on dental implants during a good portion of our visit. I’d think someone in management would be paying attention to that. Maybe put a baseball game on? I didn’t mention it because our bartender was busy keeping everyone fed and happy. She was great. They served my delicious fried clams is a plastic bucket which was unusual. All the clams were under the mountain of fries. The awesome bartender got me a big plate so I could empty the bucket and enjoy my lunch.“

The flavored ones were not overly so - not sweet - and were crafted to represent light flavor alternatives like aperol spritz and lemoncello were the two I tried in a flight. Bartender was pleasant, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Would recommend.“

“My next door neighbor so it’s oh so convenient and always right on time! Reasonably priced in today’s pricey marketplace for a tasty burger and they have a gluten free bun. Not a gourmet experience but better than run of the mill fast food. Eating in is a fun experience surrounded by the East Regiment Beer Company.“

“We came by on our first day coming into Salem, Massachusetts. We came in at about 2:00 in the afternoon and there was a farmers market going on across the street. It was a wonderful lively place to sit and people watch. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, made sure our drink stayed topped off and kept us with great glasses of ice, cold water and on top of all that the lobster roll came out with such a delicate blend of butter and seasonings. It was beautifully put together. No wonder they're number one“

My sister and mother got the counter salad wrap, I got the Counter Burger, my daughter 12” cheese pizza and sister in law the grilled cheese. The amount of satisfaction being whispered out of our mouths…oh my god! Everyone’s food was absolutely delicious, we all voted that this will be our food place to eat every time we come to Salem. With the amount of hospitality, Kindness and attentiveness that Ashely gave to us, she was top notch! You have one AMAZING employee at The Counter. We can wait to come back, we would love to check out Hotel Salem one day. So all in all, myself and my family give The Counter a 10 out of 10, and we give Ashley a 10 out of 10!!!!“

The menu selection for sandwiches has offerings for everyone. You can create your own sandwich with toppings of your choice.

As visitors, it was a bit hard to know where exactly to stand to place our order.

Know that this place is very busy!

Walk-in orders:
1. Online order pick ups: walk-in and pick up your order to the left of the registers
2. Express orders: far right side; ordee up to one dozen uncut bagels, cream cheese, coffee
3. Individual orders: form ONE LINE at the left hand register. Keep to the right side of the wall while queued up. You are assigned to a worker and not a specific register.

Place bagel orders first, any sandwiches, loose bagels, etc. Then they make your sandwich, then drink orders, then payment.

Seating inside may be limited. It all depends.

Parking lot holds ~18 cars; turn around may be fast. Do NOT park across the street at Salem State or you will be towed.

Highly recommend the sandwiches (lots of meat); I should have gotten the Rare Roast Beef but opted for the Sausage, Egg & Cheese breakfast sandwich. VERY large and can feed two average people or enough for those that have a big appetite.
