“I came to Arlington for a business trip from Atlanta. I've been to the Ballston Food Court several times since I visit frequently. First time at Hal & Als and I ordered the brisket sandwich. the cashier who I assume is the owner was telling me about who he learned to make ribs from down in Atlanta. he was so hospitable too. he asked me to let him know what I thought. I completely forgot. everything was great. halal BBQ is a little different but it blew me away. I'll def revisit when I'm in Arlington again.“

“Great barbecue and delicious sides. It’s somewhat expensive, but prices are fair given how much value add is in the food.
The hard part for me is spending over $100 to stand in line, carry my food to a table, and then improvise how to go about divvying up the food because they have no plates.“

“Old Blue catered my daughters wedding. I will be recommending them to everyone I know. Old Blue has the best BBQ food in the greater DC area - so, that would be enough to recommend them - however, if you are planning an event, you will not believe the quality of the service they offer. Everyone was helpful, had great suggestions, they even shared decorations with us. The day of the wedding was also perfect - they were attentive and seemed to anticipate every need. Again, they would be worth it just for the food, but they perfect because of everything else.“

“When I tell you that’s I’ve been looking for some good authentic bbq, I have! And, I’ve been disappointed up until now. I decided to give DCity Smokehouse a try. I got the smoked wings, ribs, and collards. The meats has a nice REAL smoked flavor, seasoned to perfection, and the collards were on point. I look forward to trying more food items from the menu. I highly recommend!“

“We are from Buffalo NY down here on vacation. The host was absolutely amazing we sat at a high top by the bar and he came over and offered to move us to a bigger table so we had more room!! The bartender was our server and he was so attentive and on top of everything. They had a large school party that had about 50 people in it and they did not let that slow them down at all. At the end of that party we ended up speaking with one of the owners and he was so nice! We ended up finding out the host had family from where we are from and that was awesome! The food was amazing, portions were huge! Moral of the story the whole staff was amazing the food came out with perfect timing even with the huge party. Pricing, food, friendliness all worth it here they were amazing“

“Hands down the best restaurant in the neighborhood. Fantastic brisket with good bark, best smoked pork in the region. Also, it's the best whiskey bar within 100 miles. Usually a good crowd with lots of regulars from the neighborhood. Staff obviously has low turnover and they're really friendly (unless they're really busy, in which case they are getting down to business). Owners are almost always on site and engaging with patrons (or de-escalate the occasional poor patron behavior). They have BRISKET dog treats! If we ever lose them, I'll grieve. I love this place.“

“Food was worth the wait. Drove from va to md to try this spot. Ribs were delicious and that sauce was something else, had me licking my fingers. The jerk chicken was good. It was more like bbq chicken with sauce on it but still good. Rice and cabbage was on point and the shrimp had great flavor to it. I will definitely be back for more.“

“Edited 10/24 to note that it looks like they brought some old menu items back so we will give them another chance.
Original review:
We loved this place when it opened and we went weekly all last year. But they completely changed the menu for the Del Ray location when they opened their Mosaic location and it’s not the same. What really irks me is that they still use photos from their old menu in all of their marketing when it doesn’t match what they’re serving. The menu changes really don’t mesh with the outdoor vibe of the Del Ray location and it really takes away from the experience.
The combo plates and smaller tacos on the old menu were the perfect for sharing and trying a bunch of everything. They also had some great menu items they removed, including the mac and cheese that was mentioned by WaPo as one of the best in the city.
Now, instead of getting a combo platter and selecting sides that come on a platter you have to choose one meat and it comes on a personal plate with rice and beans, as if it’s a sit down Tex Mex restaurant instead of something unique. We already have four of those within walking distance of the Del Ray spot. Another change they made is that when you order a taco, you get one larger taco instead of two smaller tacos that can be shared. The menu doesn’t specify that, and we were expecting something different because we were used to the old menu. I ordered the fish taco, which sounded great, but was really bland.
The changes are a real disappointment. I used to love recommending this place to friends, and the meat is still great, but I feel like this place has lost what made it special wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to eat here.
Editing to adjust this downward. We tried to give this place a few more chances over the summer and after last night we are not coming back. Start to finish, it was a really awful experience. We waited at an empty hostess stand for several minutes before we saw anyone and then sat at our table for fifteen minutes before anyone showed up. We never got water. Only two of the five items we ordered came out correctly. The food was cold and honestly just kind of gross. We saw our server twice the entire time we were there and watched someone who ordered takeout return their order because half of it was missing. Whoever is running this place just doesn’t care about it anymore. It’s really sad. We used to love it here but it’s just awful.“

“Ordered the BBQ chicken with burnt ends and cheddar biscuits over DD. I got an incredible amount of food for my money (especially for a BBQ joint in DC), and everything was absolutely incredible!! Breads and meats so flavorful and perfect. So so pleased! Over 5/5 stars!“

“I had the brisket, ribs, baked beans and cole slaw. The brisket practically melts and was so delicious. The ribs were great too. Tried several of the sauces. I like the mustard & the origins sauce best. Meal was big enough to ask for a doggie bag to finish it later on.“

>March to June 1/2 slab ribs only: top tier on par with cookout??
>July to September ribs only: burnt on backside, okay topside, heavy charcoal taste and lighter fluid odor.“

“This little counter service bbq joint is phenomenal. It is tiny. With just enough room to order, but the food is some of the best bbq ever. Its smoked and grilled, the wings are not just the drumstick or flat, one wing is both peices. The chicken is so tender, the ribs fall apart, the sauce is happiness on a plate. We are from Tennessee, and this bbq blows anything we have out of the water. And service is FAST. Thank you for the best good we had all trip!!“

“We dined on a Saturday, which was very busy, as the space is not too large. The main lesson learned is the Diamond level is not worth it, though the food is all quite good. Even if you go with a larger group/ long table, you still only have one grill. This makes it very challenging to cook and feed efficiently, especially with the seafood that takes longer to cook in conjunction with the times seating of 90 minutes. Again, the food was very good across the board, from apps to the me at quality to sides, to dessert. However, we were in a panicked rush the entire meal trying to cook our food. Didn't catch our server's name but she was very pleasant and nice, inefficient in bringing our food and checking in on us. Would come again but for a lower tier.
Plenty of street parking around the restaurant.“

“I personally love this restaurant, but when you to a BBQ place, get BBQ food because the nachos were not the best. HOWEVER! Their Mac n cheese..?! Absolutely on point! It’s like the Mac n cheese your grams cooks you, or at a really good cookout. My mom wasn’t impressed with their catfish but to be fair, my grandma was a gourmet chef and we are used to her catfish. I liked them (mind you, I never really like catfish) and their fried pickles are SOOOO GOOD! Their sangria (white) is a dangerous drink. You can’t taste the alcohol so I highly suggest you are careful when you are throwing those back. The service was okay. It was a Saturday and I was expecting quick service, but when we finally got service our staff was super friendly and attentive. Again, when you are at the harbor, please go to this restaurant. The head chef is really friendly, the wait staff does go out of their way if something isn’t correct, and they IMMEDIATELY correct it. Everyone has off days and that’s okay! I still love this place🥰“
