“One of the first truly elite level meals ive had in detroit. Steak and cheese eggs with sourdough toast and fruit. Server and staff incredibly friendly and great music. Kept coming to fill coffee was fresh and hot. Steak seasoned perfectly and a nice thick cut so affordable $22 for everything. Amazing portion and seasoning on cheese eggs. Fruit was orange slice banana and strawberry only!!! No filler melon cantaloupe nonsense! AMAZING“

“Single women beware I was being followed throughout the building on the way to the elevators to get the restaurant. Followed by one guy that I saw, but when I got to the elevators he came to the elevators and another guy was behind him, he did some sign language to the other guy as they slowly walked by as I had just explained to the lady at the elevator I was being followed. I don’t know what they were planning but he definitely looked me in my face as I entered the Renaissance building, as he was already there, then he began to follow me as I saw him every time I looked back over my shoulder. Getting to these elevators are difficult so you have to stop and read the signage and figure out which way to go and he could’ve been gone on his way but No he didn't! I definitely felt uneasy and fearful. I was celebrating my birthday and meeting my niece there. Women be careful!!!!!! The salad was Great! The octopus was just ok, would not order again, the Halibut was bland but fair.“

“I've always been a fan of Carrots n' Dates, especially when I'm on a health food kick. Recently, the owners have done an overhaul of the restaurant and I am LOVING the staff. They're always attentive, helpful, and seem eager to learn the business. The food is always fresh and delicious. By far one of my favourite lunch picks while I'm busy working on my school work. The owner did reach out to me to apologize and offer cleaning/replacements for my clothing. They also spoke with the staff to make a training and learning lesson for them which I appreciate. I’m changing my rating of the experience based on Owen’s response, as most owners do not attempt to rectify a bad situation.

I have never had an experience as bad as the one I just had at Firebird Tavern. Needless to say I will never return or recommend this place to anyone. The visit started well and our server was very pleasant and attentive. Halfway through our visit, a full tray of drinks and shots was spilled on me to the point that a mop was needed and a wet floor signed was placed behind me. Not only that, but my white shirt is stained and not reparable. I was soaked. The server eventually did apologize to me and told me that she was personally comping ONE of my drinks. First of all, I would NEVER expect the server to comp any drinks. Second of all, I was never approached by the manager to access the damage or talk about comps, WHICH I would assume from the establishment itself. When we were brought our bill, I asked the server, ‘what is the establishment taking care of for my damages’. The manager eventually came to talk to me and did not seem aware of the situation, even after many servers explained what happened and I showed him my clothing that was still wet and stained. He simply replied that the server was comping one drink and he would see what he could do. The server came back with the same bill, no initiative from the bar or manager and I paid for the bill as it was. How is this acceptable from a bar that my table paid several rounds of drinks and food for the night? I have never experienced this lack of care in my life and cannot express my disappointment and frustration with the management and overall experience of Firebird. What an embarrassment to our city. As a resident of the downtown area, I would never expect such a terrible experience.“

“Amazing tour! Michael our host was both entertaining and informative, definitely not stingy on the samples either! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! I myself am not so much of a bourbon drinker and found that I enjoyed sipping my cocktail and the different samples. Tasting from the different barrels was an awesome experience. We plan to go to the new tour starting in January as we enjoyed this one so much! I was also able to try the other liqueurs made by detriot distillery at the end and wow! Nestled right in the heart of the historic Eastern Market district, just a stone’s throw from the Detroit River and a hop across the Ambassador Bridge from Canada, this place is an absolute gem that radiates Midwestern soul.

I visited with my lovely wife Melanie and my always-up-for-a-good-time in-laws, and let me tell you, from the moment we stepped into the brewery, we were greeted with that unmistakable Midwestern charm. The staff? Friendly like they’ve known you for years. The patrons? Just as welcoming. We shared laughs, recommendations, and even some bench space.

Speaking of sharing — we sat outside and ended up sharing a table with a delightful local couple and their young kid, who was full of energy and joy, bouncing up and down on the bench like a little piston engine. You’d think that would be distracting, but honestly, it added to the warmth and life of the experience. It was like being folded into a living postcard of Detroit hospitality.

Now, I never tip. Like, ever. But the service here? So exceptional, so genuinely warm and attentive, that I found myself enthusiastically leaving an 18% tip. That might not sound like much to some, but for me? That’s basically a standing ovation.

Let’s talk about the restrooms. And believe me, we need to talk about the restrooms. Spotless. Gleaming. Like the kind of clean you see in sci-fi movies where robots do all the cleaning. I went in twice and came back both times feeling like I had just walked through a showroom for premium tiles and top-tier janitorial diligence. Even my mother-in-law commented on it—and she never talks about restrooms.

Now to the beer—oh yes, the beer. We sampled a beautiful flight that included:

🍺 Jumbo Juice Hazy IPA – Bursting with tropical citrus and a velvety mouthfeel, this beer is like a Saturday at the lake house: relaxed, bright, and unapologetically satisfying.
🍺 313 IPA – Crisp, balanced, and bold, just like Detroit itself. This one is the IPA equivalent of a Michigan tailgate party: hearty, dependable, and unforgettable.
🍺 Pineapple Market Day (Session IPA) – Light, fruity, and full of zing—imagine the refreshing joy of biting into a perfectly chilled slice of watermelon at a Midwest county fair. Yes, that good.

We were surrounded by gorgeous murals painted on the buildings nearby—massive, colorful expressions of Detroit’s creative pulse. Every wall tells a story, and together they give the whole neighborhood the feeling of a living art gallery.

And before I forget—because this deserves its own paragraph—the shawarma. Oh. My. Goodness. We snagged it just around the corner in the Eastern Market and devoured it like we hadn’t eaten in days. Juicy, flavorful, with garlic sauce that dreams are made of. The wrap was perfectly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside—like the city of Detroit itself: tough where it counts, but full of heart.

So yes—Eastern Market Brewing Company delivered everything we hoped for and more. Fantastic beer, charming locals, unbeatable vibes, and restrooms that deserve their own Yelp page. I’d cross two borders for another visit.

“The SE MI Brewery Discovery Tour continues. (I'm done counting, it takes too much effort)
The building used to be a church. I personally love that repurposing. (Once saw a church knocked down to put in a Walmart! ) The layout works great: big U-shaped bar surrounded by 4-seat high-top tables. The all-important stainless steel vessels taking the place of the pulpit & choir. 6 big screens are spread around for the sports oriented. There is a room of the back of the main one with big leather-clad easy chairs & an actual fireplace. So cozy.
The free parking is in the back but you have to enter from the Biergarten which is entered from the corner. So, if you or a compadre are using a wheelchair, get dropped off at the corner.
The beer list is pretty broad, 2 pages, the food menu is of decent size.
Got a Lip Lock Cherry stout followed by a Peach Blonde. The stout was less sweet than expected (based on nothing) but nicely balanced. The peach version of the Dirty Blonde was tasty and refreshing.
Ate an Atwater Brat in-between. The brat was OK. The pretzel bun was good, the toppings (cheese, jalapeños, bacon bits) were good, too. The brat itself was the weak spot, tasted too much like a big hotdog.“
