“We had such a lovely experience here Saturday night. I had made a reservation for four, but ended up arriving with our son as well when our babysitting plans didn’t work out. I apologized that we were suddenly five, and the staff were so gracious about it, immediately putting together a larger table for us and making us feel completely welcome.

The food was amazing, but what really stood out to me was the service. The staff was warm, attentive and seemed genuinely aware of what might make our evening easier and more enjoyable. At one point the chef even sent out a little vegetarian sushi roll for our son to try which was such a thoughtful surprise.

It was just a really lovely evening all around. Great food, wonderful service, and the kind of hospitality I'm still thinking about days later.“

“I have ordered so many times here since I moved to Ottawa I have truly lost count. There are no bad items. They even toss in free snacks every now and then! Such a sweet family and wonderful ladies who run it. Their daily special are such a great deal, and a good way to try different items in their menu.

Their sushi platters are some of the cheapest in the city, and no one can beat their quality. Salmon platter for $25 with 20 pieces is a crazy steal. So good. Their bento boxes are also so packed so thoughtfully.“

Little did we know we were in for an exclusive sushi experience in the dining room. The staff were very accommodating to ensure we could get our food in good time so we could get to the game on time. “We LOVE sushi and ordered the Fire Dragon (a special roll) and it promptly arrived at our table with a real, authentic FIRE!

Folks who sat next to our table, once strangers, paused their own conversation to delight in our fire’s ambiance.

Yet the server offered no introduction or explanation.

She walked away as we all stared - as if hypnotized, our bellies hungry - as the bright flame from this small dish next to our beautiful baby sushi roll frolicked 6-8 inches high like a mini Olympic torch.

We watched it for a bit, not knowing quite what to do.

“Do we place each sushi roll fragment into the fire with our chopsticks - like a marshmallow?” I asked.

“Maybe we pour the liquid over the sushi roll while it burns?” asked my BFF.

“I think the liquid is sake,” he added.

“That just seems kinda dangerous, doesn’t it?” I replied while contemplating the high school physics and chemistry classes that should have better prepared me for this moment, perhaps.

Imagine the additional insurance costs alone! I thought to myself (inside voice). Maybe that’s why sushi is expensive.

The flame lasted quite some time and eventually extinguished itself leaving no smoke, yet a lingering feeling we had missed something bigger than our mortal selves.

We each sampled the liquid, like cavemen (yet cultured - so we thought - until this brave new world experience at J:unique Sushi).

“It kinda tastes like butane,” I observed, having never tasted butane before.

“It has to be sake,” noted my astute BFF.

We referred to the menu again as if it was a safety card on an airplane. There was no mention of the fire or fuel source associated with this dish.

We left satiated by the food and also the bewildering experience, knowing someone will one day offer us an explanation for what this dish was and how it ought to be consumed.

Yet to ask that evening would have been too easy - and would merely serve to diminish Magic (TG) and mystery of a very special, memorable dining experience.“

“I'm from Toronto and I was craving takoyaki. I got the poke bowl, takoyaki and 2 pieces spicy salmon. I tried everything right away in the car first then took it home

The takoyaki was what I expected, super yummy.
I think the fish was good. The sushi rice was a lot harder than I'm used to, not as fluffy. Maybe should have a bit more water

The poke bowl, the ingredients were good but it was missing some flavor. I realized there wasn't any spicy mayo.

I'm thinking the food could be made for the demographic since this is decently away from downtown and some my friends like less fluffy rice and the spicy mayo might be too strong for some people.

I would definitely make it optional to add spicy mayo for the poke bowl and tempura bits but I love the texture of them so that's a personal preference“

“This is my husband and I's favourite sushi place in the city! The staff are all incredibly kind and helpful, the atmosphere is so nice, there's not a lot of seating which I personally love. We regularly eat in/take out and every time the food has been fresh, tasty and quick. You have to try their beef gyoza, I think it is the best I have ever had!! My husband is obsessed with the lobster roll!! I am not a big leave a review person, but I felt this place truly deserves all the stars!!!“

“I was going to give this place 4 stars because the location is a nightmare. You have to walk through downtown market zombie land just to reach the front door. I’m out here dodging the walking dead just trying to get to a dinner reservation. But then I thought, why punish the restaurant for municipal decay? We came for a friend's birthday. I ate here a little over a year ago and it was good, but this time it was diabolically delicious. The food, the service, the vibes...flawless.

But let’s talk about the real crown jewel of this establishment: single, fully enclosed, private bathrooms. Do you understand what a luxury this is? It’s just you and your gastrointestinal distress in a soundproof bunker. No gaps in the stalls, no strangers judging your demons. It’s a beautiful thing.

Here is the catch, though. Tomo is a bizarre reverse Cinderella. At around 10:45 PM, the upscale dining spell wears off, and the entire room aggressively mutates into a ghetto-fabulous Y2K nightclub. One minute you're having a sophisticated conversation over pristine food, and the next you're in a 2004 Sean Paul music video.

In my degenerate twenties, I would have seen that DJ as my own personal iTunes hostage and had the best night of my life. I would have been the unhinged girl hanging halfway over the turntables, breathing hot vodka fumes directly into his ear and requesting he play How Do You Want It by Tupac.

I'm way too old for that shit now. I looked at my group of friends, told them to shut their little mouths, and that it was time to go.

Our favorite one has the baby smooth chest! We ordered the Wagyu beef with hotpot, striploin steak, shrimp, lobster tail, and chicken stir-fry, and every dish was cooked perfectly and full of flavour. The ingredients were fresh, the portions were generous, and the presentation was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere made it a great place for a special occasion or a night out.
