“I am sorry that I do not recall our server's name. He was exceptional in his knowledge of wine, food pairing, and his recommendations were EXQUISITE. Lean, handsome, gentleman with short brown curly hair. Excellent service all around. I arrived before my date. He offered me a delicious brut. He paid attention to detail, offered suggestions at the precise time, and followed up with care. I had the steak and frites off the bar menu. Complimented well with the garlic aioli for the fries, a chimmichurri, and a demi glaze for the tender steak. My date had the scallops. He suggested the perfect wine pairings. I had the seghesio Zin. He had the sonoma cutrer chardonnay. The dessert was a creamy cheesecake. All cooked and prepared to perfection.

Update*** came back from impromptu stop to watch the drone show for the 4th and enjoyed the steak and frites at the bar. Maybe even better than the first time with more chimichurri :) service at the bar was phenomenal and all the staff were gracious and friendly.“

“Butter roll perfection warm, soft, and buttery enough to make you question every other sandwich you’ve ever had. The lobster? Fresh, sweet. I did try adding extra lobster, but honestly, it didn’t change my life enough to justify the price save that cash for dessert or another roll.

The place is tiny, with just a few outdoor tables, but you’re surrounded by adorable little shops, so it’s basically like eating luxury seafood in a postcard. The vibe is super chill and informal the kind of place where you can wear flip flops, sip your drink, and watch people browse stuff they don’t need.

“Good doesn't do justice to this restaurant. Located in the Empress Hotel in La Jolla, we decided to try it with friends on arrival, as we were tired. We had expected an average hotel restuarant. Boy were we wrong. Just to give this some context, we live in Bend,OR, where we eat out very frequently. We moved there from San Diego 5 years ago, and had lived in San Diego for 40 years... but never went to this restaurant. That was our loss. Every staff member was impeccably trained, pleasant, and helpful. The meal was very good, and we had the cherries jubilee for desert as a celebration with friends. Great meal. And one of the three that we had in the 10 days we were in San Diego. I had the filet for my last meal, and it was perfectly prepared. The linguini with clams was served the prior meal with clams in the shell, exceptionally fresh and with an excellent sauce. My wife said the wines were excellent as well. Don't miss this place. You will regret it.“

“I love eating at Rubio's. I have been eating here since moving to San Diego 21 years ago. I was sad to see 13 locations across San Diego closed abruptly as of last Friday, including the nearby Renaissance Plaza location, but was glad that this location has remained open for business.
You cannot go wrong with the original fish tacos, but I also highly recommend the blackened Mahi Mahi grilled tacos and gourmet grilled shrimp tacos.

Vegetarian options: When I am eating vegetarian, I enjoy the cheese quesadillas. If you are pescatarian, there are many options.
