“I’m a big fan of low key spaces that dial it in. Chef Chew as well known as he is, is highly underrated. What he does with tofu is humbly masterful. While other places will rely on fake meats,he transforms a slab of tofu into a layers and pockets of flavor that get turned into one of the best vegan fried chickuns in the area and a vegan philly protein that is natural gluten free bc it’s basically just tofu and spices. The collards melt in your mouth but somehow don’t taste overcooked. And I think he changed his cheese sauce slightly bc it tastes even better since his reopening. Offering a vegan fried chickun and steak that isn’t made of processed ingredients is a subtle triumph that I don’t feel gets enough recognition. Vegan soul food done right. Much respect.“

Be sure to ask for the green chutney. I thought it was lacking in flavor. I added some Indian pickle to liven it up when i got home. It came with 3 large pitas. “If there’s one place that’s been a constant in my life, it’s Al’s Big Burger in Albany, CA. For the past 25 years, Al’s has been my go-to spot for the ultimate comfort food experience. From my middle school days to now, nearly turning 40, my affection for Al’s has only grown stronger.Let’s talk about the main event: the bacon cheeseburger. It’s nothing short of perfection. The burger is always cooked to juicy perfection, the bacon crisp, and the cheese melted just right, creating a symphony of flavors that dance in your mouth with every bite. Pairing this with their golden, crispy fries and the unparalleled creamy, dreamy peanut butter shake is the epitome of a classic American meal that can’t be beaten. But it’s not just the food that keeps me coming back year after year—it’s the nostalgia and the consistently warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes Al’s feel like home. Walking into Al’s is like stepping into a time machine, where for a moment, you can relive those carefree days of youth while enjoying a meal that’s as delicious now as it was back then.Over the years, I’ve seen trends come and go, but Al’s Big Burger remains timeless. It’s a testament to the quality of their food and the love they put into each meal. Whether you’re a long-time local or just passing through Albany, Al’s is a must-visit for anyone seeking a taste of burger heaven. Here’s to Al’s Big Burger—may it continue to be a beacon of culinary delight for many more years to come. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, do yourself a favor and drop by. You might just find yourself writing a glowing review 25 years from now, too.“

It was my suggestion to have lunch here. We could leave the car parked and it was a short walk. Happily, it was a good choice. I ordered the Shrimp and Asparagus salad, and it was delicious. The salad consisted of mixed greens, avocado slices, cherry tomatoes, a semi-hardboiled egg, and asparagus topped off with two skewers of grilled shrimp. The Louie dressing was served on the slide. K had the pulled pork sandwich. The interior was pleasant, the bathrooms were clean, and the service was attentive. The Taproom is on my list for a return visit.“

Golden Gate Bistro Food Truck Fast Food • $
601 23rd St, Richmond - 7.78 miles

“For many years our workplace had a generic food truck onsite that served up traditional tacos, burritos, and the occasional weekly specials like loaded nachos. They had pre-made rice plates too. The quality was decent but after a while its possible to get tired of the same-oh, same-oh.One day I began seeing a red food truck from my office window, as opposed to the plain unmarked white one. It turns out to be Golden Gate Bistro, who specializes in burgers made to order.I tried both the Akaushi Cheeseburger and Grilled Chicken Sandwich and can recommend both. Akaushi is from Japanese Brown cows, and one of several sources of Wagyu. It'll cost more than In and Out or Habit Grill but its justifiable with the juicy burger. I also love their thick-cut, perfectly seasoned fries. If burgers aren't your thing, they also offer up smoked ribs, Impossible burgers, and the usual Mexican favorites like Quesadillas.“

“Really great spot. The outdoor seating is a little hit and miss, but that's more the fault of the location than anything else. I recommend sitting inside unless it's a very nice day.The food there is great, and the staff are very friendly.Top recommendations:- L.E.S.: this is the best pastrami I've had outside of a famed Jewish deli, and even then it is a contender. Truly a perfect sandwich that I could never get tired of enjoying.- duck banh mi: not really a banh mi, but it is a delicious sandwich with duck and pickled vegetables.- Spicy lamb burger: this thing is HOT, and in the best way. My scalp was sweating by the end , and it is delicious if you're into lamb. Would make great meatballs (hint to the menu makers hehe). They have decent wines, a good beer selection, and a nice bar with classic cocktails and great whiskey options... Particularly if you like Elijah Craig haha (their distributor must have gotten a good bonus!).Overall, if you are in the area and want a fun spot to stop by for lunch or dinner, this should be on your list of places to try. If you have gone and haven't tried the L.E.S., go back and give it a go (you're welcome ?).“

“This was a lovely spot to stop for a late breakfast consisting of French toast with 2 eggs and sausage and a huge tuna salad. We arrived shortly after 1 p.m. and were done just a few minites before 2 p.m., when they were closing. The wait was very reasonable. The coffee, $2.75, was fresh with just about all the fixings at arm's reach and refillable! The prices were quite reasonable compared to many comparable establishments and considering the rate of inflation. Personally, I was glad the cafe was empty, since I'm still very cautious with the spread of COVID, but there were at least two to-go orders filled while we were there. The tables all appeared to be clean as well as their single handicap access restroom, which was well stocked. The waitress (blonde) was friendly and talkative, but did not bother us. She checked in on us a couple times and offered to refill our coffee.I did not take photos of their menu, since someone else posted them, in part, in the last couple of days.My only dislike was the music playing in the back, 70s rock n roll, likely from the kitchen, which probably helped the cook keep moving. I just don't care for the high pitch electric guitar sound, but otherwise love the 60s-70s tunes. Overall: Scrumptious, clean, and friendly staff.Parking: Free 2-hour limit street parking only.“

“The food was great, portions were great, price felt worth it, the building is quaint but charming. The only negative thing was the attitude of the employees. They weren't rude or offensive, but seemed disappointed that a customer walked in. Frowns on their faces and a sort of surprised look that someone walked in.Perhaps they were just tired that day. Cooking is hard work. Or maybe they just hate the job or hate life. Either way it felt rather uncomfortable in there as if I've caused them additional pain by ordering some food. It was not busy in there at all, only me and another customer.Overall great place, will return. “After happily patronizing Barney’s 3 East Bay locations since 1988, I finally decided to write a review. There is no other place in the East Bay with a better selection of burgers. My favorite is the Voodoo burger, served medium rare and piled high with blue cheese, applewood smoked bacon, melted provolone and a generous portion of perfectly sautéed mushrooms that spill over the brioche bun onto the plate. The meat is of high quality and cooked perfectly to order. Sweet potato fries are excellent and the mocha milk shake is exceptionally tasty, infused with real coffee grounds that sets it apart from any mocha shake I’ve ever tasted. Each Barney’s location has a hidden patio in the back with plants and greenery. Think of it as an oasis for escaping the busy streets. So why has it taken me so long to write a review? Well for one, Google didn’t exist when I first started patronizing Barney’s. Second, I’m selfish and wanted to keep the patios to myself. Yes I’ve tried a few of their other burgers but they don’t hit the spot and do not warrant my 5 stars. Pro tip: request some chipotle aioli sauce on the side for dipping your fries. So why no pictures as with all my other reviews? When the burger arrives I dig into it so quickly and voraciously the last thing on my mind is reaching for the camera, now replaced by a smart phone. Go do that voodoo that I do and head to Barney’s today.“
