“We wondered into this bar trying to find a place to hang before dinner and its the best. The crowds are minimal but its very welcoming. And Eugene (gene) is such a great bartender. Give them a flavor profile your trying to get and they will make the best drink. Also great music!!!“

“It was just the sort of down to earth place I had been looking for. They have an assortment of domestic bottled beer for $5, as well as liquor, etc. Met several nice and friendly people the first time I was there, and I was only there an hour or so.“

“Really creative space and community! It’s an old establishment too. I remember walking it as a kiddo not knowing what it was and I know my whole family and I felt safe. I felt safe as an adult going in to hang out and socialize too. Thanks for being a beautiful and rather humble community throughout the years!“

“We came here for drag brunch. We got seated at the bar but honestly there's no bad seat as they go around the room. The energy during the event is high. They can provide change before and during the show for tipping. Food is good and drinks plentiful.“

“Wonderful bar!! Good drinks!! Only problem is I was made super uncomfortable by a guy trying to talk to me mid conversation with a nice lady I had just met at the bar. Really ruined the vibe for me cuz I thought this place being advertised as a lesbian bar meant it was a safe space away from men. Really ruined the atmosphere for me :(

“Moby Dick is my favorite bar in San Francisco. A truly community oriented gay bar with the most welcoming staff and great pours. They play great music videos and this is the best spot to celebrate all types of occasions such as catching up with a friend or a big gay holiday such as Halloween. They also have a pool table, rotating art for purchase, and oceanic themed decor including a large fish tank above the bar. Delightful!“

“Visiting from London with a mate. Went to HITW twice during our week up there and loved it both times. Staff are really friendly. The decor is .... GayTwilight zone grunge.... Is the best I can come up with. Really eclectic punters but everyone is very nice, no sense you're encroaching on a locals bar type thing. Last night we spoke with a barman with a long beard, really friendly throughout. Tbh, everyone was. Thanks guys!!“

“It’s extremely fulfilling for me to be sitting at the edge of the bar right now and be at the same time writing this review. I’ve moved to the USA exactly 1 year and 27 days ago; trying very hard to recover from 2 years intensive depression agony. After 4 weeks in the country I discovered 440. As I walked in for the first time, a guy called Tony greets me and asks me how he could help me. That epic night; where I opened up to him and had the best service and attention ever, marked the start of what I use to call “the finally good days of my life”. Tony, Levy, George, Andy, Claudio, Michael, John, Jessie, Keith and Tyler are the best human beings to Conect and Feel Safe and Feel Home. If you’re gay or just need to find a place to relax and feel welcomed and home. 440 is the place. The bar itself and everyone single one inside it and behind duties are AMAZING.“

“El Rio is such a classic SF spot. The backyard patio is honestly the best part — super spacious and perfect for dancing or just hanging with friends. The crowd was really inclusive and the energy felt like a big backyard party. Drinks were reasonably priced for SF too. Definitely a great place if you want a fun, lively night out.“

“Have you ever used a bathroom that smells like fresh bake cookies? Well this is your place. Go to the lower level restroom. Vents from next-door‘s cookie shop vent directly into the bathroom. It’s the best smelling bathroom in the world.“

“You know, I was among a select group who were regulars there from 1997 - 2008, which is arguably the heyday of the bar. In fact, I bought so many drinks and merchandise there for myself and my friends that I fully expect a bronze plaque to be placed on the bar because fer chrissakes, if you people had kids I would have put them through medical school by now. I even have a photo on the patio of my mother and me at the pre-wedding party they held for my ex and me. How about we get some of the past patrons to help out by adding photos to your gallery? “Pollie's Follies drag brunch competition at Midnight Sun was super fun! The bar is pretty small, which was fun because it wasn't overly crowded and we were right next to the queens. Polly Amber Ross and Sis Phyllis were my faves!“

“Drinks and service were wonderful. I really wanted to like this place more but none of the toilets were working and they couldn't run the dishwasher due to a plumbing issue. All very unsanitary. Also cash only but they have an ATM. Hopefully they will have the plumbing fixed before we try again. We didn't want to leave early but we had to since there was not a functional bathroom. Update: it's fixed 🙌 🤗 and now I can just love the vibes.“
