Aunt Charlie's Lounge Gay Bar • $

“It was just the sort of down to earth place I had been looking for. They have an assortment of domestic bottled beer for $5, as well as liquor, etc. Met several nice and friendly people the first time I was there, and I was only there an hour or so.“

Moby Dick Gay Bar • $
4049 18th St, San Francisco

“Moby Dick is my favorite bar in San Francisco. A truly community oriented gay bar with the most welcoming staff and great pours. They play great music videos and this is the best spot to celebrate all types of occasions such as catching up with a friend or a big gay holiday such as Halloween. They also have a pool table, rotating art for purchase, and oceanic themed decor including a large fish tank above the bar. Delightful!“

Hole In the Wall Saloon Gay Bar • $
1369 Folsom St, San Francisco

“I was in town for the Folsom St Fair. My entourage decided to take a break were we stood. We landed in front of the Hole in the Wall Saloon, through the black tarp we discovered a world much different from the one we just left. A world of dim lights, music, men, skin, and sticky floors. It was the best time at a bar I ever had. I showed up with a pride t-shirt and left with a harness, a gift from a stranger whom I only knew for 20 minutes. Everyone was fabulous! Thank you for the memories.“

“Jolene’s is everything a neighborhood bar should be.

This place just gets it. Great energy, friendly bartenders who actually seem to enjoy being there, and a crowd that feels down to earth and inclusive. The cocktails are strong (and surprisingly well-balanced for the price), the music is always on point, and the vibe walks that perfect line between chill and lively depending on the night.

What really stands out, though, is the sense of community. Even if you come alone, you never really feel alone here. People actually talk to each other. It’s a spot where you can dance a little, have a drink that isn’t watered down, and just be.

Whether you’re starting your night or closing it out, Jolene’s hits different. 100% recommend.“

Wild Side West Bar • $
424 Cortland Ave, San Francisco

“A San Francisco legacy business; old school lgbt hangout with plenty of TVs to watch Niners and Warriors games. The decor is full of beautiful nostalgia; one of the TVs is dedicated to either Xena or some hilarious b-movie with Bigfoot. Excellent drinks (amazing margaritas and whiskey sours) and top class service. Love this place; A+++ ♥️“

El Rio

El Rio Bar • $
3158 Mission St, San Francisco

“El Rio is such a classic SF spot. The backyard patio is honestly the best part — super spacious and perfect for dancing or just hanging with friends. The crowd was really inclusive and the energy felt like a big backyard party. Drinks were reasonably priced for SF too. Definitely a great place if you want a fun, lively night out.“

Midnight Sun Gay Bar • $
4067 18th St, San Francisco

“Pollie's Follies drag brunch competition at Midnight Sun was super fun! The bar is pretty small, which was fun because it wasn't overly crowded and we were right next to the queens. Polly Amber Ross and Sis Phyllis were my faves!“

Mary’s on Haight Bar • $
1437 Haight St, San Francisco

“So glad to see this bar re-open! I had been coming to the original Trax bar (visiting from London) for 24 years and I’m glad to see it has hardly changed! However, on my first visit back we were served by Rosie - it appeared she was not remotely interested in her job. She spent much of the time ignoring us when we needed serving and when she did serve us she was miserable, sullen and responded in one word answers! Could do better!“

440 Castro Bar • $
440 Castro St, San Francisco

“440 is a Castro staple, particularly if you are a man of a certain age. My experience is that when I go to bars with a younger crowd I am treated like some sort of old perv, although I myself am not into younger guys. If you wanna go someplace where folks will talk to you, maybe even flirt with you or grope you as you squeeze through the crowd, then this is the spot. They are NOT going to produce a spectacular cocktail for you, so I suggest a simple drink or a beer.“

Modelo Especial

“My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday. I had an old fashioned (tasty but they didn't have a big ice cube). She had an Irish coffee.

It's the kind of place that SF yuppies might bring their relatives visiting from a less excitiing 'Burb. Tastefully, appropriately cozy. And definitely SF Castro, but mature.“

“You know, I was among a select group who were regulars there from 1997 - 2008, which is arguably the heyday of the bar. In fact, I bought so many drinks and merchandise there for myself and my friends that I fully expect a bronze plaque to be placed on the bar because fer chrissakes, if you people had kids I would have put them through medical school by now. I even have a photo on the patio of my mother and me at the pre-wedding party they held for my ex and me. How about we get some of the past patrons to help out by adding photos to your gallery? Hmmm?😜“

Mother Bar • $
3079 16th St, San Francisco

“Drinks and service were wonderful. I really wanted to like this place more but none of the toilets were working and they couldn't run the dishwasher due to a plumbing issue. All very unsanitary. Also cash only but they have an ATM. Hopefully they will have the plumbing fixed before we try again. We didn't want to leave early but we had to since there was not a functional bathroom. Update: it's fixed 🙌 🤗 and now I can just love the vibes.“
