“I love the place, but the Sarasota Location needs faster bartenders. In addition, they need a place for guest waiting for a table to order a drink at the bar. We waited 45 minutes for a table, got to the table and waited 30 to 40 minutes for our mixed drink. We received our food in about 20 minutes, which was great. Jonathan the server was very apologetic. I went 2 weeks ago and Mary Kate my bartender/server was horribly slow. I had one drink and wings and took about an hour on a Sunday about 1pm. She had no sense of urgency and was not attentive at all. I love the place, but can't continue to go if this slow service is the norm from the bar. At the Tampa location the service was great and they had not one table available. Sarasota needs to step it up!“

“Mr. Tequilla on Tiamiami Trai East was our initial visit to their Mexican restaurants. This was different from what we anticipated; the restaurant is beautifully decorated with vibrant chairs, booths, and various artifacts. There is a spacious bar offering a wide selection of alcoholic beverages. The food and service were fantastic. We ordered the quesadilla along with beef and chicken tacos, which came with a side of rice and beans. It was absolutely delicious. We also enjoyed the Tequila Margaritas with a buy one get one offer. We will definitely return.“

Well, the equivalent for tacos is the tortilla—and at Tortilleria La Rancherita, that’s where they set themselves apart. I’ve been coming to Tortilleria La Rancherita since I was a kid growing up in Naples, and to this day, it’s still one of the very few places I trust when I’m craving real, authentic Mexican food—especially barbacoa.

My family is from Chihuahua, Mexico, so I don’t say this lightly: their barbacoa is the best I’ve had outside of Mexico. Real barbacoa isn’t just “shredded beef”—it’s traditionally made from beef cheek, rich, tender, and full of flavor. That’s exactly what you get here, and it’s something that’s getting harder and harder to find.

There’s also a personal connection for me. My dad was known locally for making true al pastor tacos, cooked the right way on a trompo. He took a lot of pride in doing things the authentic way, and places like this remind me of that. Since he passed, it’s been tough to find spots that live up to that standard—but this one still does.

This isn’t a fancy sit-down restaurant. It’s more of a small, bodega-style spot where the focus is on the food. Fresh tortillas, simple ingredients, and flavors that speak for themselves. That’s how you know it’s the real deal.

“Ordered Chicken Nachos for an appetizer. I probably wouldn’t order them again as they were lacking ingredients I’m accustomed to such as jalapeños, sour cream, beans. The tortilla chips tasted like they were cooked in old oil to best describe it. On with my dinner which was delicious and that was the Fajita Chicken Burrito. I ordered a side of Pico Salsa. Fantastic! Service was excellent. It’s located in a small plaza off Davis Blvd near Shadowlawn, right after the car wash.“
