“I want to thank Tony for bringing the finest and most delicious Szechuan cuisine to the North Shore. I live downtown and have visited his restaurants in Chinatown and Michigan Ave. The food is exception each and every time I go to either location. When the "coming soon" sign popped up in Highland Park, I could not have been more thrilled, considering the food at our local chinese restaurants refuse to raise the bar on their food. There is no better Szechuan restaurant in the Chicago area or beyond. The food, the staff, and the service are all exceptional and executed with perfection and passion. This has been the most anticipated opening on the northshore for a reason. Lao is simply unbeatable. I love it love it LOVE IT!!!!!“

“This place remains our go-to location in Highland Park. There are other, larger restaurants with Asian cuisine, but Jade has been a favorite for several years now.Features: Not sure if they are yet open for seating inside post-Covid. Their "stop outside the door for pickup" policy during Covid was very effective.
Parking: Limited parking in front of the location, but a larger lot is available next door behind the neighboring building to the east.“

“I had Jipai Jianbing and it was delicious. The staff said that the one with raw pine was the best, but since I don't like raw pine, I ate it with jianbing and have no regrets. The jianbing is so big that you will be full even if you only eat half of it. Those who are not familiar with the spice may not like it, but those who are familiar with it may enjoy the nostalgic taste. The cream fries were also delicious. The fries were clean, but it felt like they were fried in clean oil. The Shojwabing was a little disappointing, but the Jianbing and cream fries were so delicious that I want to visit again the next time I go to Chicago!“

“This place is SIX stars. The dumplings are actually homemade and you can see them making them. The quality is like Din Tai Fung (Taiwan based) or Koi Palace (Daly City/San Francisco) but in a small Evanston strip mall. ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC.
Order ahead because they steam to order.“

“I absolutely love this place. I’ve had 2 other Cantonese restaurants I can say I’ve enjoyed and honestly Hunan Star is by far my favorite now. Pan fried noodles, veggie fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, Mongolian beef. All amazing. Do yourself a favor and grab this when you are in Evanston.“

“This was my first time in Glencoe to watch a show at Writer’s Theater, and I stopped by this place for a meal before the show. It seems to be the only Chinese restaurant in the entire town and also one of the few places both open at night and relatively affordable.
My friend and I ordered the Walnut Shrimp Special and Sauteed Green Beans. We were told it would take 30 minutes, so we sat inside to wait, and the food came out right on time and piping hot. You can’t dine in the restaurant though, as they don’t have a dining license.
9 times out of 10, Chinese takeout will always hit for me, and Shanghai Garden was no exception. The green beans were flavorful and well-sauteed. The walnut shrimp had a nice crispy texture, tangy taste, and also came with broccoli and crispy noodle pieces.
The portions are large for the price and they also included a large box of rice with our order. For just $15 per person, we had a good amount of leftovers. Overall great value, tasty food, generous portions, friendly service— I would love to return if I’m in the area again!

“For me, this is THE best Korean-Chinese spot in Chicago. Sure, there are places like Yu's Mandarin, Chef Ping, Great Sea, Great Beijing, etc but they don't focus only on Korean-chinese food like Lai Lai do, hence in my opinion, Lai Lai serves the best Jajangmyeon and Jjambbong.
Now, Jajangmyeon comes in many varieties, but most people aren't aware of the differences:
Regular Jajangmyeon: All ingredients are stir-fried, then water and starch are added, resulting in a familiar starchy texture with added sugar or salt.
Gan Jajang: Cooked with just oil, it tends to be more oily and has a stronger "fire" taste from longer stir-frying, often more salty.
Uni Jajang: Ingredients are minced, so the dish lacks visible ingredient shapes and texture but brings out most flavor.
Sam seon Jajang (precious ingredients from sky, land, and sea): Originally with expensive items like shrimp, abalone, and pork, now often substituted with squid and cheaper ingredients.
Tray Jajang: Essentially +2 portions of Sam seon Jajang without the expensive ingredients.
I mention this because in Chicago, there are very few places offering these varieties, and even fewer doing it well. No one specializes in it quite like Korea, and the closest I've found to matching Korean taste is regular Jajangmyeon from Lai Lai.
I can also go on about Jjambbong and the chicken as you see on the picture but perhaps on another review...“

“Very happy that found this place has reopened. We used to come here for lunch and dinner, there is no other Asian restaurant in north shore we feel good to enter to eat. The menu with varieties and many Asian popularities dishes. Think this may be comparable from south Canal street China Town and the best one in the north shore neighborhood.
Parking: there is plenty free parking spaces.“

“My Mom and I were looking for a new (new to us) Chinese-American restaurant. Palace Cantonese surpassed all expectations. Every plate we had was delicious and food was hot. The service by Calvin was outstanding.
We entered the restaurant and were the only ones during this late lunch time. We sat in the comfortable and cozy booth (firm for what my back needs). Right away, Calvin brought delicious hot tea and water. The Fried Won Ton, which is hard to find without meat, was perfectly fried, not soggy. The cup of egg drop soup was a generous portion, more like a medium bowl. The veggie egg rolls were large and tasty. The Chicken Szechuan, was like a kung pao chicken and very flavorful. I loved the touch from Calvin bringing extra peanuts without us asking. He also asked if we needed more tea even though our steel carafe was half full. At similar restaurants, I’ve not seen that service.
The final touch was receiving 2 almond cookies (plus fortune cookies), which my Mom and I love.
It’s my new favorite restaurant which I will be patronizing every time I’m in Chicago.
Parking: Restaurant in small strip mall.“

“I had the orange chicken and crab Rangoon. It isn't your typical Chinese takeout. When you walk in you may think so, but the food is definitely above the normal Chinese takeout. It was crispy and the sauce was great. The crab rangoon were huge and had a lot of filling. I will be back for sure.“

“It’s a great go-to place where I often pick up on Tuesday nights. The food is ready 10 to 15 minutes after I order it over the phone. The lady who takes the order and gives me the food to-go is unfailingly pleasant and always smiles. We love their Mongolian beef, and enjoy their egg rolls, hot & sour soup and wonton soup. Never a bad meal. All delicious with generous portions and a fair price.“

“I came specifically for the shrimp toast this is the only place that has it. I searched Waukegan/zion/beach park/kenosha no where to be found. This was so good! I had it in DC and it was comparable. The pot stickers are thick dumplings and made fresh.Egg roll was good but don’t know if I tasted shrimp in it which is listed is included on the menu. Crab Rangoon I would prefer the crab cut up and mixed with the cream cheese and a little more flavor and chicken teriyaki sticks not enough flavor a little dry.Overall though I would definitely return and would like to try more menu items. We started eating right away so pics are not as aesthetically pleasing.“

“Been going to this local restaurant for years ... Originally for their Dim Sum but since for many dishes off their HUGE menu. I recommend grabbing one of their little carryout menus and they have photos and deeper descriptions for those of us challenged by their Chinese language ... then ordering via their excellent online system which they have perfected since bringing a younger generation of family onboard. I'm guessing they are the brains behind the online interface. But it works great, and is fast and transparent. They accommodate special orders online and still carry both "small" and full size orders at very reasonable prices, somehow. Which nowadays with Bidenflation is MUCH appreciated.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!“

“WOW! We loved take-out from ChinaTown Restaurant in Morton Grove. We tried:-lechón kawa li: crispy, delicious, addictive-scallion pancake: delicious, great to dip in a sauce-beef/chinese broccoli chow fun: delicious combo of crunchy broccoli with tender beef. Delicious wide noodles.-egg rolls: good! but compared to other dishes, not my favorite.A great value-we'll likely get five servings out of this. It's not a fancy place, but I liked to see, when we picked up our food, how the team at the restaurant worked together.Check them out!“

“My Dad's top list favorite food was Chinese/Mandarin! Yu's Mandarin was one of his longtime favorite restaurants. Sadly, my dad passed away at the end of August 2024. To honor him, his legacy, and celebrate him as the MOST AMAZING MAN, HUSBAND, FATHER, AND FRIEND...we hosted a luncheon for over 30 friends and family at Yu's Wheeling after my dad's final services. A few days prior, my Mom and I met & worked with Frank at Yu's to plan the menu and luncheon details. Of course, everything was fantastic and delicious! Our guests were extremely satisfied with the quality of food and service and treated with the utmost respect... and happily welcomed the option of filling up their own takeout container with some of their favorites to enjoy at home later! Whether you choose Yu's Mandarin for a relaxing dinner, lunch with friends, or a large private gathering - expect delicious food, great service, and a memorable time! THANK YOU to Frank and the entire staff - at all levels - on behalf of the Sebastian family.“

“Five stars! Our group had lunch here recently and shared some dishes, served by friendly people. The Vegetable Momo was wonderful, light and fresh. I had Nepali Khasi with a flavorful sauce. Others had Chicken Chowmein, Lamb Vindaloo, and Jhol Momo. All were full of taste and the ingredients were fresh and perfectly prepared. Overall, it was a wonderful meal, greatly appreciated by everyone. We'll return!“

“We went for a late dinner on the weekend and enjoyed delicious food. The ma po tofu was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The fried rice had a generous amount of tofu, which we appreciated. The kung pao chicken could have used a bit more spice. Ordering lo mein as a side with an entrée comes at $5, but it’s just plain lo mein without any veggies, which feels overpriced. Drinks were fantastic. Service was quick.“

“We heard about this place from friends who said we shouldn’t be deterred by the reviews (which are dated). Our friends couldn’t have been more right - Excellent food at excellent prices. Delivery was faster than the quoted time and the food was so hot we needed to wait a few minutes. Definitely our “go to” Chinese place. Chow fun and moo shu pork are excellent. Great egg rolls too.“
