5 STARS — DMV CLASSIC DONE RIGHT
Eastern Carryout is hands down my #1 spot for chicken and mumbo & honey sauce—and if you know, you KNOW.
You HAVE to get the chicken and fries with the mumbo sauce AND honey sauce mixed.
I’m telling you right now… 10 OUT OF 10. The chicken is fried perfectly, juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and that mumbo + honey combo is next-level. Sweet, tangy, and absolutely addictive 🔥🔥🔥
I did a TikTok on this place a few months ago and it still stands strong.
This is a DMV staple that never disappoints. Consistent food, classic flavors, and exactly what you want when you’re craving real carryout.
If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out. Eastern Carryout stays in my regular rotation—no debate.

“The food was incredible. The wood burning oven added so much flavor and the menu has a great mix of land and sea. Our favorite items were the charred maitake mushrooms, the pork chop and the half chicken. Don’t sleep on the half chicken. The wine list was well curated and reasonably priced. Highly recommend.“

“Food choices were amazing and my server was top notch!! There were so many options on the menu. Can't wait to go back. I had the crab dip and the Kona Steak Skewers for apps. Along with Seafood Ravioli as an entree. Oh, the Jameson Whiskey cocktail was delightful as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“

“My friend and I arrived for brunch earlier today, and our experience was outstanding! We both enjoyed our meals tremendously. The serving size was such that we both had enough left over for the next day. Our servers, Jamari and Jamaal were top notch. They provided us with a balance of dedicated service without being overbearing. I definitely plan a return visit. Hopefully, I'll get the same servers, although from what I observed, all of the servers were excellent!“

“Returning to Washington from a France worn down by its own melancholy — a nation led by a presidential couple seemingly disconnected from l'esprit de grandeur — was a relief. The Monocle, nestled just a short pas de géant from Capitol Hill, felt like an antidote. Walking through its doors, I immediately felt transported, like one of the CIA operatives from Lioness Psy-Ops, covertly meeting allies in a safe haven of quiet luxury. Opened in October 1960 by Connie and Helen Valanos, The Monocle has seen more political deals sealed over its crab cakes than perhaps in the chambers of Congress themselves. As the Washingtonian noted, “The Monocle is a better restaurant than it’s given credit for,” serving dishes like “pan-fried Chesapeake Bay oysters baked in a light curry sauce” that feel like culinary diplomacy at its finest. What strikes one immediately is the duality of the space: half public house, half refined eatery. In the restaurant's more elegant quarters, I chose a glass of Sancerre, its mineral brightness pairing effortlessly with the signature crab cakes — plump, golden, and loaded with chair de crabe so sweet it could make a New Englander weep. A red wine-braised New York strip followed, its sauce reminiscent of the old-world simplicity one finds in France’s brasseries, yet undeniably American in its confident presentation. The maître d’, Nick Selimos — a fixture here for nearly three decades — greeted every guest with the kind of warmth that makes even the most hardened lobbyist feel comme chez soi. “There’s nothing more satisfying,” said John Valanos, the owner, “than having someone say, ‘We’ll come back ourselves.’” And come back they do — senators, staffers, and curious tourists alike. Sipping a digestif, I glanced at the black-and-white photos adorning the walls — Kennedy, Nixon, and other Washington titans. It’s said JFK dined here regularly during his Senate days. As The Washington Post humorously observed, "Intentions are spoken here, alliances formed, and deals sealed," all over dishes that balance simplicity and sophistication. Leaving The Monocle, I felt reconnected to the vibrancy of Washington, its pulse steadied by the legacy of places like this — where history, gastronomy, and a touch of joie de vivre blend into something unforgettable.“

“Had an amazing experience at Los Caballeros! The fajitas were absolutely awesome perfectly cooked and full of flavor. “Yesterday was my first time there, myself and a party of five. One member of our party arrived and had the table reserve the wait was 30 minutes, took that long for the rest of us to arrive; when we did we were seated rather fast. The crab bomb stole the show, best any of us ever had. Second runner up the crab soup also the baked potatoe was well portioned and was not dried out. The haddock was fried to perfection, and the cake dessert oh my, I ordered dessert to go, When I later dugged into the lemon pound cake each morsel was delicious, as if it was home made. Over all an excellent dining experience, a little pricey but was worth every single dime, we will return.“

“My friends and I went to Motorkat today after attending a play in Olney. Mikey was our server and was a stellar server. He was friendly yet professional. We came in with an appetite. We started with the smoked salmon and artichoke dip. The portion size was nice, and the chunky texture and flavor fit well with the Saltines. Next was the pistou salad, roasted sunchokes and the pork belly with creamy grits. The pistou salad was artfully plated and was soo good. The roasted sunchokes came with a miso ranch dressing and sesame seeds. It was so good and the mixed textures worked well. The pork belly sat on a bed of the creamiest grits I've ever had. The pork belly was tender, and the smoky tomatoes were a great paring and provided just enough acidity to cut through the richness of the dish. Still hungry, we ordered the flank cut short ribs and broccolini. The grilled broccoli were lighly tossed with chili garlic sauce, peanuts and basil. Divine. The flank cut ribs were Cumin scented and accented with a tart cucumber salad. They were fork tender and very flavorful. Our only disappointment was the scallion Pancake with pickled vegetables. We felt that overall then presentation was nice, but the Pancake was a bit thick and was a bit charred on the bottom. The pickled vegetables overpowered the pancake.. Out meal ended with mango sorbet. Overall, we loved the service Mikey provided, and all the staff was gracious. I highly recommend this spot for dinner. Thank you!“

“Hubby and I had dinner here and the food was great! Lovely atmosphere, decor, music ... small, quaint yet elegant and chic. Service was wonderful, food came fast. Hubby had the Cajun Crab and Shrimp sandwich and I had the Salmon sandwich ... both served with their delicious fries. We also ordered the King Rolls and Hot honey lemon pepper Buffalo wings ... delicious. The staff and manager were very personable and friendly. I give it a 5 star review! #KrabKing #BLKBIZ #GreatFood #Close2Home #UpperMarlboro #Rt301“

“Very quiet & intimate place. Everything was clean & easy to access. The service from Jennifer was so welcoming. You know how it feels to when you go visit relatives you haven’t seen in a while? That’s how Jennifer made me feel. We had a brief interaction but I felt at ease talking to her. The food was absolutely amazing!!! I ordered the catfish & grits. The steam & favor coming from the meal was breathtaking lol. If I return to DC I sure will be back. Also, try one of their homemade drinks. The 14 Carat drink was delicious.“

“The wings were very good. However, the gumbo was not. It was very skimpy on the meat, and I didn’t find any okra at all. It was also a bit under-seasoned for my taste.
The Henry Pineapple Peach drink was good, but in my opinion, it wasn’t quite enough to share.
That said, Jordan was great! I hope I get seated in his section next time. He was very patient while we were being indecisive and provided excellent service throughout our visit.
We definitely want to come back and try brunch!“

“If you get your fish cooked there have them leave the head on. The cook cut to much off and you or paying for the head anyway. Check your order before you walk out we got home and the fish looked much smaller than we paid for. I paid for two fried fish when I got home to get they only gave me one and a half. Not good business..“

“Really enjoyed our meal here! The service is INCREDIBLE. Unbelievably friendly staff. Our food was a little slow to come out, but without even having to bring it to their attention, they apologized and comped us 2 drinks. When the food did arrive, it was absolutely delicious. The sliders were juicy, and if you get them, make sure you order the fries because the seasoning is divine. Also really loved the fried green tomatoes! We had a lovely time!“

“Wanted to try something new for breakfast today and it ended up getting their sausage, bacon egg and cheese on Hawaiian rolls and that absolutely brought such a good start to my day. It was super flavorful cause they gave me syrup that I could drench on it and that absolutely transcended the whole experience. I fell in love with those sliders, and I will absolutely be ordering them again and trying new things off the menu.“

“Ernie's Crabs offers a classic Maryland seafood experience centered around fresh, steamed blue crabs, creating a unique and interactive family meal. The entertainment lies in the communal act of cracking and savoring the crabs in a relaxed atmosphere. Costs depend on market prices, making it a special occasion treat. Weekday evenings during crab season often provide a less crowded experience for indulging in this beloved local delicacy.
It's an experience best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, allowing for plenty of storytelling and laughter between cracking sessions. The fun truly lasts as long as the crabs do!
The cost of indulging in Ernie's Crabs depends on the market price of crabs, which can fluctuate seasonally. Ordering by the dozen or half-bushel is common, and the price will vary accordingly. While it might not be an everyday meal, it's a worthwhile splurge for a taste of Maryland tradition and a unique family outing. The value lies not just in the food itself, but in the experience – the freshness, the atmosphere, and the shared enjoyment.
The best times to visit Ernie's Crabs often depend on your preference for atmosphere and crowd levels. Weekday evenings can be a good option to avoid the weekend rush. Crab season typically runs from spring through late fall, with the peak season often offering the best availability and prices. Calling ahead to check on crab availability and current pricing is always a wise move, especially during busier times. Ultimately, any time you can gather with loved ones to enjoy fresh Maryland crabs from Ernie's is a good time!“
