“I had a great experience at Maki Sushi while I was in town for work and happened to stumble in for dinner. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the Sushi Deluxe, which came with 10 pieces of chef’s-choice sushi and a roll — I went with salmon and avocado. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and thoughtfully put together.

Pete, who is both the sushi chef and the owner, was excellent. We struck up a genuinely good conversation while I was eating, and he was friendly, complimentary, and clearly takes pride in what he does. Sitting at the bar felt welcoming and relaxed — the kind of place where you actually enjoy talking to the person making your food.

One small but really impressive detail stood out: Pete noticed I like a little wasabi with my tuna and offered me fresh wasabi without me even asking. For a sushi spot of this size, having fresh wasabi on hand is always impressive — it’s a great little treat, and usually something you only get if you know to ask. That kind of attentiveness says a lot.

The quality of the fish here is excellent. My favorite bite of the night was the salmon belly — rich, buttery, and delicious. The sushi here is definitely geared toward a more classic and approachable palate. It’s simple, clean, and done well, and the quality of the fish and service really shine.

I’m really glad I found this place and will absolutely come back next time I’m in the area. Thanks for a great experience, Pete — maybe next time I’m in town you’ll have some toro on hand just for me.

“For a long time, sushi was considered exotic and maybe a little scary. But now one can find it practically everywhere, even in the grocery store. Sushi is a Japanese dish referring to the sour flavor of the vinegared rice.

Translated from Japanese, meaning “looks beautifully flavored,” my partner and I decided to stop for a quick bite at this establishment situated on a busy Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights.

Upon entering this clean and relaxed vibe as first-timers to Oishi Sushi, we had the entire place to ourselves and decided on a table by the window. They also have a small stool area in front of the sushi chefs.

Their extensive menu comprises a range of sushi rolls, sashimi, and bento boxes.

We opted for the Seaweed Salad, Avocado Roll, and Vegetable Lover Roll.

Food was excellent, presented well, and using the freshest quality ingredients. The Seaweed Salad was a tad salty; otherwise, everything tasted deliciously good. The price and portions were reasonable. The service was quick; the staff was friendly and courteous.

The fish is always fresh and the rolls are consistently delicious! My go to is the Star Tower. The amount of fish is very generous and it blends perfectly well with the rice, avocados, roe and sauces. It’s honestly one of the best sushi spots around, both for the food and the people!“

This place used to be a Chinese store, and around 2022 a new management took over and turned it into a sushi place. it still looks like a regular Bronx Chinese store inside. Unlike other sushi restaurants, this isn't really the kind of place I'd want to sit and eat. But it's great for takeout.“

“We had dinner at Matsu on Friday......its a little gem in Hillsdale. We were pleasantly surprised, by the quality and quantity of the food. The Staff went out of their way to accommodate us. However, our meal was disrupted by a group of unaccompanied children who were very loud, constantly changing the restaurant’s music, and playing with the volume to the point it was hard to hold a conversation. One even mentioned their dad owns the building. Another diner actually asked if they were ours because it was that disruptive.

I really hope the owner addresses this, because it’s not fair to the staff or the guests if the children are being truthful about coming three times a week being this disruptive. Otherwise, this place is wonderful and I’d absolutely return when I’m back in the area.“

Very nice atmosphere, super comfortable. The food is delicious and menu is affordable for the quality of the food you are getting. My husband and I had the Agedashi Tofu, Pork Sirloin Katsu, Tuna Kimbap, and Potato Croquette. For dessert we had the Mango Bingsoo.

The bingsoo is probably the best in the area! Full of delicious mango, and syrup. It’s very tall too, so it’s a good deal.

The owner is very nice. Always provided a quick hot water refill.

The atmophere/service is okay at best. At least 9/10 of the times I've been for dinner the place is half full at most but they ALWAYS ask if I made a reservation. When I say no, they make it sound like they can barely fit me in. Also, they refuse to serve tap water, they make you buy bottled. Not a bad place overall, but there are better options around.“

Free food! Yes they give you things for free. Free platter of salted edamame. I took my leftovers home, because I couldn’t finish my huge lunch portions.
