“My family used to call this bakery “The Crabby Woman Bakery” back in the 1980s. That’s because at least one the regular women who worked behind the counter was unusually crabby. I used to ask my parents to pick up a birthday cake that I had ordered ( or for whatever occasion) and I would cook the dinner for my extended family. My dad would arrive with the cake, but he always seemed a little unhappy. One day, I asked him why. He told me “whenever you send me to that bakery, I always tell the woman behind the counter that I am picking up a cake that my daughter ordered. I give the woman your last name…..she becomes irritated and asks “I need to know the size of the cake and the cake and icing flavors”. When he admitted that the only thing he knew was the last name, the woman would become very annoyed. This should be a short pit stop always turned into a very long process. The bakery woman would always figure out which cake was mine but it took a lot of time and many questions. Eventually, my dad changed the bakery name to “The Crabby Woman Bakery” and that’s what my family ( and friends) called it for the Emanuel years. The baked goods are all AWESOME. Especially the sour cream cookies and strawberr6 shortcake!“

So far I have only tried 1- the blood orange. It was fantastic! The staff member working was very kind & helpful. I cannot wait to go back. If you are to go make sure you go early. I appreciated the time taken to create each of the whimsical desserts like the polar bear vanilla mousse cake and the mango mousse cake. My favorite was the mango mousse hands down! The mango mousse had delicate layers to it. It was not overly sweet and a nice portion size. At nearly $10 for one, I think it is worth it on special occasions. If I were to go again, I would just buy multiple of the mango mousse. The polar bear cake was my second favorite. The mousse is very light and smooth. The least favorite was the hazelnut cake. We’ve raved about it to friends and family and stopped in for slices of it a bunch.When we were thinking about what we wanted to do for our wedding cake, we looked at Paris Baguette as an affordable option. Unfortunately, we saw that their celebration sheet cake didn’t come in the Blueberry Yogurt flavor. But then we thought what the harm was in asking if they could do a custom cake - and Diana at the University City location was willing to help us out. We ordered two Celebration Sheet Cakes that she and her team customized with the blueberry yogurt icing for us. We also ordered a smaller Blueberry Yogurt cake for our cake slicing pictures.On the morning of the pickup, I was freaking out (pre-wedding jitters and all) and showed up 30 minutes early for pickup. The team at this location was so sweet and patient with me. They even offered me a drink on the house and a staff member helped me load up the cake into my car.At the wedding, a family friend who doesn’t eat any sweets had TWO SLICES (compliment of the highest degree). Everybody loved the cakes, people were asking where we got them, and we were so happy with our decision to go to this location.“

As we love sourdough bread, we reached for a loaf, and as we were searching, we couldn't help but find several other items that tempted our tastebuds. We did purchase a loaf of sourdough ($6.99) which we found to be very tasty but maybe a little denser than we like for sandwiches. It has made very nice toast in the mornings. We also could not resist the loaves of orange-cranberry and cinnamon breads ($7.25 ea.). They were both very tasty and moist. In fact, because we had purchased so many goodies, I was afraid the cinnamon loaf might spoil before we could consume it and so I froze it. After thawing, it was just as good as the orange-cranberry! We actually resisted all the donuts, but I think next time we are in Philadelphia and the Reading Terminal, I'm sure we will indulge.“
