“My experience at Earl's kitchen is always a good one. Yesterday I walked in and was greeted by one of the lovely hosts Haneen. She walked me to my table with great energy and made sure I was seated somewhere with not too much noise, as I requested. The food that I ordered was from the happy hour menu, which was great as always! Manager, Waleed, came to check up on me throughout my time dining in and made sure I was having a pleasant experience. “With the pandemic closure of Capitol Hill's Harold Black, Washington, D.C. needs more top-notch speakeasies. Enter O.K.P.B from the creator of The Sheppard, another popular bar that closed. Here's why you must visit this Mount Pleasant speakeasy:

1) Drinks: Monday-Saturday starting at 5 p.m., they create a hand written menu of a handful of drinks based on the bartender's inspiration and inventory. Always on the list is a "bartender's choice," the truest test of a bar worth their salt. O.K.P.B. nails it. Armed with my preference for sweet drinks, the bartender created three (yep, they were that good) unique, distinct drinks that tickled my sweet tooth. Each was well shaken and innovative- among the best cocktails in Washington, D.C. Each cocktail is $14.

2) Space: It's a speakeasy so they don't take reservations. It's first come, first served. My buddy and I walked in on a Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and were seated within 10 minutes after being on the waitlist. Once inside, it gives off classy, yet inviting speakeasy vibes. The space is dark and dimly lit. There are booths, tables and the bar in the back. There are two small restrooms that look like a home library. Push the books to open the restroom for more surprises inside.

3) Vibes: It's a speakeasy in a very inviting neighborhood and O.K.P.B. balances the two well. You feel like you're in a friend's personal speakeasy. The bartenders are elite in their craft but approachable in spirit.

4) Location: Once you're on the waitlist, they'll text you when a table is ready. You then have 15 minutes to get their before releasing your table. That gives you some time to walk up and down Mount Pleasant Street N.W. looking inside local shops, other bars and restaurants. The neighborhood has a number of Free Little Libraries, historic homes and murals within alleys, giving visitors plenty to see while killing time. We found free street parking a few blocks south within the actual neighborhood.

“Absolute 5 star experience with a special shoutout to our server, Chaewon, who made it feel like a Michelin dining experience. I made a reservation for two on a Saturday night to celebrate a birthday. Booking a week in advance, the prime time dinner hours between 6pm and 9pm were already limited. So I highly recommend booking in advance. Upon arriving 15 minutes early, we were greeted by the hostess and seated with little to no wait (~2 minutes). Upon being seated, our table was already set for two and we were quickly greeted by our server, Chaewon. After she explained the menu and the dining experience, we elected to go with the Dinner Prix Fixe option, which was $80 per person, and included multiple cuts of meat, a welcome dish (currently a Pumpkin Porridge), a side, an appetizer, a savory dish per person, and a dessert per person. The Dinner Prix Fixe is absolutely the way to go when dining here and we were more than stuffed. We typically do the all you can eat type of restaurant for Korean BBQ, but this place easily topped those in taste and experience. Every single meat was tender and literally melts in your mouth. I also want to just reemphasize the point about the Michelin star-like service. There wasn't a single second where we felt like we were waiting for anything or questioning anything we ate. Food came out super quickly with perfect spacing between dishes. Every aspect of the meal was described in detail as it was cooked and served. Water was constantly refilled. The table was cleaned thoroughly after the main meal and before serving dessert with fresh new utensils. To top it off, as we left the restaurant, our server personally took the time and effort to open the door for us as we exited. So if you're looking for Korean BBQ or just a fantastic dining experience in general, I HIGHLY recommend dining at Ingle and asking for Chaewon to be your server.“

The staff were all very attentive and many wished her a happy birthday as they welcomed us in, which often gets overlooked at other restaurants, but it made her morning feel so much more special. It may seem like a small notion, but it was a touching detail to our initial visit. The brunch menu is small but packed with flavors and meaningful dishes. We love this and wish we could try it all. We decided to start with the PB&J French toast as a shared app. It’s an entree item, but upon hearing how much the owner loves this item we had to try it out.
