“I had the chance and pleasure to dine in this gem of a restaurant last weekend. We had ● French Onion soup for starter, Penne Bolognese, Blackened chicken, Butter Chicken and Bread pudding ala mode. The soup is classically prepared, properly caramelized Onion and flavorful broth with melted swiss cheese over a bed of crusty baguette. Blackened chicken is really tasty and satisfying, served with homemade mashed potatoes and roasted veggies, Butter Chicken is tender, well marinated and cooked to perfection. Nice balance of flavors from yogurt to the spices used. Served with fragrant rice, papad and freshly baked Naan bread. Penne Bolognese was awesome. Pasta was cooked Al dente and really soaked the flavors, textures, and hearty meat sauce. We cleansed our palate with Banana Apple raisin bread pudding served warm with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. The cinnamon renders and blended beautifully with apple, smashed banana, and tartness of raisin. Tamed by a generous drizzle of chocolate and caramel sauces. Cozy, clean and familiar decor. Service is always good. Very attentive and prompt. I'm looking forward to try their weekend brunch.“

“We tried a new restaurant last night and it was fantastic! I love Ethiopian food, and wanted to try a place I hadn’t been to before. First thing to note is that the word “Bete” is not the french word “bête,” meaning “beast” (as in animal). It is an Amharic word meaning house, similar to “Beth” in Hebrew and “bayt” in Arabic, as I was told. All this just to clarify that the restaurant’s name is more closely translated as “Africa House,” not “African Beast,” which I ignorantly thought prior to learning this from the owners. We told the host that it was our first time there and that we were willing and eager to learn from him and try new things. He was very helpful and guided us though the menu. Before making a decision, we noticed that some other guests were eating fresh banana with their injera (the ubiquitous crêpe-like sourdough bread served with virtually all dishes), which piqued our interest, Lindsay in particular. When we asked which dishes came with banana, he laughed and told us that they don’t serve bananas, and it’s a common way of eating injera for Somalians, and that those guys arrived with their own banana. Apparently this is a BYOB restaurant. So, with no bananas to be had for us, we decided that the $99 mixed plate was the way to go. As you can see, there is a wide variety of food in this dish. In the middle, ground beef topped with their homemade cheese (similar in texture to feta, not as strong in taste, yet oh so fresh). At first, I was convinced there was mint in this, then I realized it was rosemary. It made it very refreshing. Bottom left is a perfectly spicy lamb tibs in the most delicious red sauce. Next to that is a mild lamb tibs that was juicy and yummy, with a couple jalapeño accents just for fun. To the right was a fried beef strip dish with onions called cha-cha tibs. Up top, a variety of lentil and chickpea mashes, plus pickled beets and cabbage. We ate like the locals, with our hands, using small torn off pieces of injera as temporary, edible utensils, and were endlessly satisfied as we worked our way around the platter. The only problem was, we just couldn’t finish it, so we ended up with a takeaway box of a couple pounds of leftovers (aw, shucks). We had a wonderful conversation with the husband and wife team, who shared so much about their culture, including the beautiful artwork and artifacts throughout the space. We even got to meet their baby, who, I am proud to say, reached out for me to hold her. She was adorable! We also learned that the wife occasionally offers cooking courses. Would you be surprised to learn that my name is on the waiting list? One can’t help but salivate I’m thinking about such a culinary experience. I wish I had discovered it sooner, despite having driven past it countless times (it’s on 111 Avenue across from Tony’s pizza). To be honest, it’s not the classiest part of town (I reported a needle to 311 on our way out), so if you’re leery of that sort of thing, now is the time to get over it and see what rewards await you when you step outside your social and gastronomical comfort zones. Just be sure to invite me along when you do.“

“Slow Pour is a bit of a hidden gem. Located on 122 street, it could be easy to miss with its non-descript exterior. However, the inside is simply decorated and comfortable. It is a the great place for a date night or a couple drinks with friends. Drinks can be ordered at the bar and will be brought to your table. They have a great list of Alberta craft beers on their menu as well as wine, cider, and snacks. I really enjoyed the Cabin Scottishish the last time I visited. I was especially impressed by how many non-alcoholic options they offer. I'm always on the lookout for places where all of my friends can feel welcome so that goes a long way.“
“Went for my 60th Birthday. My wife has dietary restrictions which the server and management took seriously. I am often critical of the food but absolutely no complaints! Started with calamari. It was ok. Ordered the prime rib, rare, with add on shrimp skewer, garlic mashed. Portion size was impressive, done as requested and shrimp perfectly cooked. One of the best prime rib I have had! Only ONE COMPLAINT- they have the dullest steak knives i have ever used. I requested a second and it was not much better! So full had no room for dessert. I will definitely go back. Just bring my own steak knife next time.Dietary restrictions: My wife is celiac with dairy and potatoe, squash family intolerances. The management took the time to understand and offer suggestions. Both steaks were tough and not enjoyable, one so tough that it was left for the garbage. The Keg has always been a family favourite so hopefully this was a one time disappointment. In any situation, it's crucial to consider multiple perspectives before passing judgment. I say aimless as I’ve been a GM so long, and I hate seeing chit chat on the floor between employees and saw a lot of empty hands. Coming out of the back of house: empty handed. Going into the restaurant from the patio: empty handed. Not helping each other run drinks while the bartender is doing his best to mix for them. My biggest concern was being embarrassed that I could leave an 18% tip not a 22% tip. As the place doesn’t take debit only credit. So I paid over $3 in service fees just to pay them the bill. I have never seen this in my life. Nothing personal. But it left a gnarly taste in my mouth and felt scamy.I came alone. Had nachos and salsa. Big fish burger and fries. And a couple drinks. Food: great. Drinks: better. Bartenders: amazing. Waitresses: good enough. Debit system: non existent.Please don’t make it difficult to pay your staff. And please don’t add a service fee to just pay the bill.“

This place served Craft beers and Pizza, I ordered the all meat pizza, delicious and the Papa Bear beer also good, the girls in the group ordered the Dill pickle pizza and bacon, and they were truly amazed at how good it was. The serving size was standard, and the dips were proportional to the dishes, which was nice. The salads were fresh and the vegetables crisp, which was great! I was disappointed, though, that the menu stated "feta" cheese in the Greek salad, but it came with Goat cheese, which I don't enjoy and would have passed on the cheese, had I known. My friend and I stopped by your location on the evening of June 13th and I just want to say thank you to the security guy that was working that night, he made us feel SOOOO comfortable and safe. When a drunk guy decided to join our table he kindly escorted him out after warning him of social distancing. He also cleaned off our table and asked us if we needed anything.
