“I’ve been coming to Ssal Korean Bistro for lunch for years and it’s honestly such a hidden gem in West Van for hearty, comforting Korean food. Their doenjang jjigae (soybean paste soup) is one of my absolute favorites — rich, flavorful, and made with really fresh ingredients.

The staff are always incredibly sweet and attentive, which makes the experience even better every time I visit. I also highly recommend the bossam (pork belly) and the soft tofu soup — both are delicious and consistently well made.

You can really tell they care about the quality of their food. Definitely one of my go-to Korean spots and a place I always recommend to friends.“

“My beautiful fiancé and I came in here for a nice meal and were immediately greeted by an amazing and welcoming service! They were so so nice and showed us to our seats and checked up on us throughout the meal. We ordered the Beef Bulgogi Rice Bowl, the Spicy Fried Squid and the Takoyaki. All of which were amazing! The Takoyaki was flavourful and didn't burn our mouths while everything else was tasteful and came out surprisingly quickly. Very clean place all around and lovely in every way. We will be coming back!“

“During our stay in Vancouver, we ate at multiple Michelin-starred / recommended restaurants, yet Dolsot was up there with one of our favorites. We got the hot stone bibimbap and soon tofu stew to start, and they were both delicious. Eating the food took me back to my time in Seoul. We also had to try to kimbap as dessert, and it was great. Highly recommend going to Dolsot for a taste of Korean home cooking.“

“I recently had the pleasure of dining at this location for lunch. The service was exceptional and the cuisine was absolutely delightful. The chicken was cooked to perfection, with a crunchy exterior and a juicy, flavorful interior. The combination of spicy, sweet, and umami flavors left me craving more. Although the portion size was modest, it was sufficient, and I look forward to indulging in a larger portion on my next visit. While the atmosphere, typical of a fast-food takeout establishment, left something to be desired, the premises were clean and well-maintained.“

“We almost always have a great meal here. Unfortunately, I don't have many photos, but their sashimi and other raw seafood are always incredibly fresh and delicious. We love most of the sushi and sashimi on the menu.

The bossam and Korean soups are always flavorful and satisfying. The japchae and bibimbap have been a bit hit or miss for us, but overall the food is consistently good.

This is definitely one of our go to spots. The food is comforting, and we always leave happy.“

The owner is super friendly! I just experienced one rude staff. I placed my order online, called the store to ask if my order was ready for pick up. She rudely said “I think its ready, you can come now” and just hanged up the phone, no thank you or anything. Kind of disappointing :(“

“This place seriously impressed me. I came here because a Korean friend recommended it, so I already had pretty high expectations — and somehow it still exceeded them. The sundae (Korean blood sausage) tasted incredibly similar to the ones I had in Korea, very authentic and full of flavor. The pork dishes were also amazing — super tender, juicy, and really well seasoned.

The restaurant itself is pretty small, so we had to wait a while for a table, but honestly it was 100% worth it. If you’re looking for Korean food that actually tastes close to what you’d get in Korea, I’d definitely recommend giving this place a try.“

“They did try to warn us away at the door as other people have noted (make a reservation to avoid this). Hard to blame them because the food is both unusual and pricey, but staff were kind and helpful once I insisted we knew what we were there for.

Our group shared the assorted marinated seafood and several other recommended dishes, which were all incredibly good with subtle, sophisticated flavors. The raw marinated crab was a whole experience (they supply gloves), but for me the marinated abalone was so elevating that I'm still thinking about it weeks later.“

Really tasted like home food, especially the kimbap since I’ve been missing my parents’ food (and the kimbap was pretty big). Also the chicken was perfectly crispy and tasted exactly like what I was craving from Korean style chicken. Overall, very tasty and really scratched the itch I had for Korean food!“

The fried rice and Jajang go really well together.
The portion is huge on everything considering this is a lunch set which cost a lot less than their normal menu price.
Only issue is the fried chicken is a bit too sweet and they are more like flour with a little bit of actual chicken meat.“

“Todak has become my go-to spot whenever I’m craving Korean fried chicken. I’ve tried quite a few places, but I always find myself coming back here. The chicken is consistently crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the portions are generous.

My absolute favourites are the Creamy Onion and Green Onion flavours. The creamy onion is rich without being too heavy, while the green onion adds a fresh, savoury kick that pairs perfectly with the crispy chicken.“

The original was juicy and quite good, while the soy garlic also had good flavor, though the surface was a bit overly sticky—almost like candy. The half-and-half was just about enough for two people, and overall, I enjoyed the takeout experience here. Not sure if I’d dine in though—the space looked a bit cramped.“

The quality of the pork cutlet was amazing — it tasted like something from a specialty tonkatsu restaurant, which is hard to believe at that price. “Unfortunately, the customer service has been consistently disappointing. The lady at the cashier is never friendly to my husband and me. During our last visit, I noticed she was very nice to the customer in front of us, but when it was our turn, she was rude again. I'm not sure if this is only toward non-Asian customers, but it has happened to us repeatedly.

That said, the food is excellent. We always order the fried chicken from here, and it has been amazing every single time. The quality and taste are consistently great, which is the only reason we've kept coming back.

“Gotta be one of the most amazing restaurants in Vancouver, if not #1! Absolutely worth braving and unhoused- and drug-beset streets of Gastown for one of the best meals you'll ever have! Started out with the local Amaro flight, which is a must-try if that's your thing; Kakao cocktail is super fun and tasty as well, with accompanying chocolate. Happy Hour menu is incredible, both in taste and value - Beef Tendon Chicharrons are fantastic, far and away the best we've ever had, a must-try. Scallops, Kimchi Croquettes, Eggplant Skewers, Ox Tongue Skewers, and Duck Empanadas are all beautiful and delicious. Roti Canai is not only the best Roti we've ever had, but the best bread we've ever had, period, another must-try. Pork Belly Rice Bowl is another winner, perfectly composed, tender, and savory. Classics Flight is another great excursion, and then Purple Haze and Steel Magnolias were an outstanding pair of well-balanced cocktails. Onto dessert - dinner was so incredible we were tempted to spring for three, so we did. The Miso Ice Cream mochi was a uniquely fantastic textural and flavorful start, followed by the Pavlova topped with pandan sorbet, creme patisserie, and jackfruit - a harmonious ensemble. Finally was the Haskapp Poached Pear, another cohesive combination with oat crumble and awesome rhubarb sorbet and coconut cream. Our server/bartender took great care of us at the bar, all the food came out perfectly paced, and the romantic and copacetic atmosphere of the restaurant made for an unforgettable evening!“
