“My husband and I brought our family to Napa for what we called The 2025 Napa Valley Great Grape Escape. One of our reservations was with Far Niente’. We were blessed to be there on the morning of first day of harvest. Our host was amazing and super knowledgeable. The grounds were perfection. Our tasting was set up and waiting for us under a private outdoor pavilion. Not only were the wines so incredible…each taste was paired with a cheese, nut and dried fruit combination. The attention to detail and the special way the vineyard made our party of 12 feel was unforgettable! We will be back!“

He gave us an amazing tour of the winery and how everything was made along with an impromptu tour behind the scenes of the oak barrels being stored. Promontory Winery is an incredibly special place and unlike anywhere else we have visited in Napa (although Ovid, Lokoya, and Chappellet are up there). From the moment you arrive, the property feels intentional, serene, and deeply thoughtful. Architecturally, it is stunning, but it never feels showy. Even the fermentation room feels more like a museum than a working winery.

What truly sets Promontory apart is the experience itself. It is completely private and unhurried. You do not encounter other guests, which creates a sense of calm and discretion that is rare and deeply appreciated.

We were guided by Kaede, who was warm, kind, and genuinely knowledgeable. She took time at the outset to understand us, our preferences, and what we hoped to gain from the visit. That care carried through the entire experience and made it feel personal rather than scripted. She left quite an impression on us and our conversations were so deep that emotions were felt - I cannot say I have ever experienced such depth and passion at a tasting.

The tasting unfolded slowly and thoughtfully. While everything was beautifully presented, we ultimately found ourselves drawn most to the Promontory wines over the Penultimate. There is a restraint, depth, and sense of place in Promontory that really resonated with us.

By the end of the visit, the experience spoke for itself. We chose to join the Founder’s because the philosophy, craftsmanship, and integrity behind the wines felt aligned with what we value and enjoy.

“I honestly expected this to be a corporate, soulless, overpriced tasting but I had a pretty good time here.

The building itself is beautiful, even though we only saw the inside given the construction. The tasting room is very posh and comfortable.

Our host was great. Didn’t catch his name but we had a great discussion about wine and he was very kind and accommodating. Not pretentious or snobby at all like I was expecting.

That being said, this wine is very expensive and I probably would not recommend this tasting for someone who isn’t a wine enthusiast. My wife is less of a wine nerd than me and she wasn’t a fan of the aged Opus One. We tried a 2012, and while I thought it was great my wife did not like the earthy tertiary flavors. We heard similar sentiment from another couple we talked to, they said “It smelled funny.”

It’s not the most crowd-pleasing or affordable wine in Napa, but a visit here is a treat for wine enthusiasts.“
