“Our Kingsmen group meets here once a month for breakfast. The food, service and atmosphere is always excellent. Denise is Usually our server and does an excellent job ensuring that our food and drink orders are correct and piping hot (cold drinks cold). She is always pleasant and friendly in spite of our large group. Thank you Denise, all the cooks, and wait-staff for making Sukie’s Country Kitchen an Institution for our community.

They take such meticulous care with every sandwich, and everyone there is genuinely caring. I’ve already gone off the freeway twice just to come back and eat there again, and each time it’s been just as wonderful.
I had the Rib Roast the first time, man what a sandwich, good amount of meat that you can taste the flavor, tomato, layered on the entire bread kept it so moiost delicious. Then the Italian, swapping the salami for mortadella (a perfect switch). The sandwich is perfectly moist, tastey, full of flavor, loved it.
Oh, the lettuce, they do an entire side salad with dressing and put it on the sandwich, unreal. I appreciate this place and recommend it to everyone who cares about a great sandwich.“

“Loved my birthday dinner tonight! Portions small for the prices in our opinion. A scallops main dish with 3 scallops is small. Drinks were amazing, decor fabulous and great service. My son had to go eat more food afterwards as he was still hungry. Bigger portions would be good. Loved everything else! Great choices, appetizers, main dishes and creative drinks were delicious. Kind of surprised knowing they knew it was my birthday that they didn't offer me a birthday "something" to make it special. For these prices I would expect something.“

“Truly a gem in the East Bay. It’s tucked away and easy to drive past (like I did the first time I went). They have a large variety on the menu ranging from pasta, to burgers, to Mexican food. I had the Jambalaya Cajun Pasta and my friend had Al Pastor tacos. The tacos were flavorful, and the pasta was very good and filling. Definitely recommend if you have a picky family and don’t want to make multiple stops for dinner.“

“The food and coffee are fresh! While there was little to no egg in my bagel sandwich the bacon was fresh and it was delicious. There’s plenty of space in there and family friendly and easy to park. It bit pricy for the lack of egg in bagel sandwich but overall delicious.“

“Been to Hotel Mac many many times and never ever been disappointed. The menu often varies with excellence across the board. Just celebrated my 70th birthday there. Wonderful evening in a great atmosphere.“

“The restaurant has a great atmosphere. The staff was great and knowledgeable about the menu. The only bad thing about the service was that they were so eager to remove plates from the table, that it felt they were rushing for us to finish sooner. In one opportunity, I asked them to leave the dish as I wanted to eat the sauce. The main plate was removed so fast while we were still finishing it. They were inflexible when I asked if I could order a plate from their family dinner (the dirty rice) and while I would expect that some restaurants would be OK with this, they weren’t, which was disappointing. Now about the food we ordered:

1. Boiled Peanuts: I understand this is probably the most popular item in the menu. The miso sauce is great, but the texture of the peanuts is strange. It gets mushy and as it is cooked for hours, it looses its structure and becomes almost a paste. It is kind of messy to eat this dish as it is cooked with the shell, so I wouldn’t order it again, but it was an interesting dish. 2/5

2. BBQ Whole Shrimp: Amazing dish. The shrimp is cooked to perfection and it matches so well with the buttery and spicy sauce. It also comes with one slice of white bread with butter that is perfect to eat with the sauce. The only downside is that the dish is on the smaller side, with only 4 shrimps and only one slice of bread, which causes the bread sauce proportion a bit off. We were expecting a bigger portion considering it was $26, but it was perfect that we didn’t mind. 5/5

3. Pork Roast: Amazing dish. We shared and it was OK for two people, while the portion is probably on small side. It comes with two slices of pork collar - cooked to perfection - very moist and flavorful. The sauce with the beans and mustard is very balanced and the crunch texture of the crackling is amazing and brings a nice combination of textures to this dish. Amazing! 5/5

4. Cornbread: Another staple from this restaurant. Amazing cornbread, buttery and the cultured butter that comes with it is perfect. It is probably more to the more dense side but it was the best cornbread I ever tasted. 4/5

5. Apple crisp with brown butter ice cream: Loved the apple texture and the ice cream was amazing, matching very well with this desert. It lacked a bit of a crunch texture and I honestly didn’t understand why it had some oats on top as they didn’t provide any texture or flavor profile to the dish, but it was very good. 4/5

I wish I could taste the dirty rice from the family menu and would probably order that as well, but we were pretty satisfied after sharing all of these dishes.

Total: $150 including tax and service (20% automatically included in the bill) for all the plates above and shared by 2. Probably won’t return in the near future, but it was a very good experience.“

“I love going to Duo Grill for brunch. They have really good food, the service is great, you get your food right away and it's never crowded. Honestly, it is such an underrated place.
I always ask for spicy chilaquiles and they never dissapoint. Their beans are also the best!“

“We had dinner there tonight (3/14/24) for the first time and we will be back. Two of the most interesting and truly delicious sandwiches we have ever eaten. I can't remember what mine was called, but it had chicken (roasted perfectly), sauerkraut, cheese and other awesome stuff on a grilled rye bread that was excellent. My bride had the turkey sandwich and loved it. But the star of the show were the Tater Tots. Perfectly crisp with BBQ sauce to dip them in and then into some wonderful real bacon bits. Every tot stayed crisp from the first to the last. The meal was worth every penny and more. Get into the Alameda location and try it. You won't be sorry. PS: The only bad part for me is that we live in Seattle and won't be back down until May. But you can bet I will be eating here then.“

“One of the best restaurants in Elmwood (4/5 green stars) It’s so easy to walk right by Summer Kitchen without even noticing it. It’s a narrow shopfront with just a few tables outside and it’s easy to miss as you ponder ice cream and other offerings from neighbors. Well, take it from me – forget ice cream and get a baked item from Summer Kitchen instead! Or try a pizza, or an egg salad sandwich – possibly the best egg salad sandwich you’ll ever have. But if you are limited for time, try one of the fresh fruit pastries (galette) – they seem expensive at $12 but they are big enough for two and totally worth it! I’m giving Summer Kitchen 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. The positives are obvious – most of the ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Everything is made from scratch and there is transparent sourcing of the meat and fish (Mary’s free-range chicken, etc.). There are a reasonable amount of vegetarian options and you can definitely find some vegan dishes too (salads, sandwich, pasta). Summer Kitchen could make the biggest environmental impact by scrapping beef from the menu – replacing it with plant-based alternatives, ideally. Beef has a carbon footprint of around 10 times that of chicken and over 100 times that of pea protein, on average. If everyone one the planet ate 1 lb. of beef per week (the US average), total greenhouse gas emissions would increase by one third! I’ll write a post illustrating all of this soon on the Green Stars Project. So I really appreciate that Summer Kitchen makes more effort than the vast majority of restaurants on improving sustainability so that’s my suggestion for the biggest opportunity for improvement – cut the beef.“

“Nostalgia, for me. Forty years ago, when I moved here, I lived around the corner. Loved the food and coffee (Peet's) and the buzzy atmosphere. So Berkeley. When I'm back in the neighborhood, I try to stop by for a good meal. Even after 30 years my son gets over the moon excited when I bring him a cheese puff. Also dropped off their out of this world pie to a family member battling cancer recovery. Everyone gets excited about their baked goods; however their meals are dang good too. Friendly staff as well. “Best food and drinks all weekend long. Marco was just an amazing individual. He made our anniversary even more special. My husband is a huge mezcal fan and asked if there was a drink the bartender could make and sure enough they made the most spectacular drink! We loved the food and drinks so much we stopped in after our long hike from Angel Island. I ordered the same mezcal drink as my husband did the night before. G was just an amazing bartender and helped us out with all the different types of mezcal and what characteristics they bring to the table. Marco even recognized us and said you guys are back. I have been telling everyone about your amazing restaurant and not just the quality of food but just the atmosphere and experience we had with the staff. They are all welcoming and make you feel like family.“

I called in after hours asking for help and he stayed to offer me support with the kindest voice and warm energy. I’ve had the fish and chips which are amazing (I have high standards for this dish). French onion soup is on pointe and the clam chowder is pure comfort food. The mandarin chicken salad is refreshing too. Will come back for the yummy food and impeccable service!“
