Simply Fish 1534 Adams Ave Ste D, Costa Mesa Seafood • $$

“We ordered the battered fish tacos and grilled shrimp tacos. Everything was delicious. The wait staff is super friendly and attentive. It was packed in there and almost closing time when we went, but to see all the staff work together and get everyone taken care of quickly and efficiently was cool to watch and experience. The black beans are DELICIOUS! The Zucchini was grilled to perfection. If you haven't tried the grilled corn, do it... you won't regret it! The fries were PERFECT... the crunchiness was uniform on all of them, not a soggy one on the plate!”

The restaurant is clean, but a little clustered, but what matters the most is the food. I was really impressed with their soup dumpling. We had the BBQ Shrimp flatbread and each had the 6 oz wood fire-grilled filet with asparagus and mashed potatoes with wine sauce. We came close to licking our plates! It was delicious. We topped off our meal by making selections from the mini-indulgence choices. The perfect amount of sweet at the end of a yummy meal! Even though we made our reservations many days in advance, our only choice was to eat outside. Populaire Modern Bistro 3333 Bristol St unit 2601, Costa Mesa French • $$$

“3 companions and I dined at Populaire Modern Bistro in South Coast Plaza on 2/21/24 and I ordered the prix fixe menu. We bought a bottle of wine separately. The PF menu was $65 per person and well worth it. Everything was spectacular. The blending of flavors with the heirloom carrots was unique. I'm not normally a huge fan of tartare normally, but it was really flavorful. The beef cheek was melt-in-your-mouth tender and even the rice pudding - which I can normally take or leave - had some wonderful, unexpected flavors. Don't be fooled by the "bistro" label. This was definitely a cut above the normal bistro fare of steak and frites or Croque Monsieur. Our server was warm and efficient. She was friendly enough to stop and talk but took her cue from us, which was much appreciated. The location used to be part of the Corner Bakery chain. It was remodeled in part, but it's in South Coast Plaza mall so not a ton of atmosphere. Once you taste the food, you won't care!”

“I don't even like ice cream, it's one of my least favorite desserts. But you know what? I was HUMBLED. Stella Jean is THAT girl!!! Not to be the person that's like "sweet but not too sweet", but the ice cream here is truly that. I tried the Ube Pandesal, Mango Sticky Rice, and seasonal Earl Grey Tea Cake, and they all popped off. Rich, creamy, fun (you get the pandesal and rice element in the respective flavors) -- but without being grossly saccharine. We stan Stella!!!”

Not greasy like other places, the pico de gallo was very fresh and specifically prepared to not make the burrito soggy. One of the best breakfast burritos I’ve ever had! “I came across this new restaurant when I was ordering breakfast items at the office. As I perused the menu, I noticed they had an attractive offering of healthy but delicious items to choose from. I narrowed down my choices to the power omelette and a date shake to wash it all down. The food arrived nicely packaged and the presentation was very pleasant and neat. The ingredients looked incredibly fresh, which compelled me to dive in for my first decadent bite. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and buttery (no fillers here) the sautéed mushrooms and spinach were very flavorful and yea, I devoured the omelette in no time flat, it was that good! I washed down my breakfast with the tasty date shake. It was refreshing smooth and not too sweet. My only gripe with the shake was that there were hard little bits in it that I had to spit out but overall everything was so good! Definitely ordering from these guys again soon! Happy Eats!”

Yeah it’s was pricey but what do people expect it’s a festival and we were in VIP so we had great spots for the show and the restrooms and vendors were all within a minute or two walk! “I stumbled upon this modern looking coffee spot hidden away in a plaza, and it was an awesome find! The pastries immediately caught my eye, each one looking extremely vibrant and rich. I got an iced chai, which was rich with a complex blend of spices. I feel like chais at other coffee shops are pretty plain when it comes to the blend of spices, but that is definitely not the case with this place. One thing that really stood out is how each drink was carefully handcrafted with attention to detail. Angel who was working at that time looked like a true artisan with how meticulous he was with every detail. The only slight letdown was the honey used as the sweetener. It wasn't quite to my taste, but that's more about personal preference than it is quality. I'll be back to try their golden ratio which is a turmeric latte and some of those irresistible looking pastries.”

“Simply Sweet Cakery was one of the wedding cake vendors through our wedding venue University Club by Wedgewood Weddings. Brooke and Christina were a delight to work with and so organized! To be completely honest, we actually did two different cake tastings because we were a little concerned with the cake texture during our first tasting and we wanted to try some additional flavors. We ended up choosing two cake flavors: lemon raspberry and red velvet. Let me tell you...I was completely blown away by the final product on our wedding day. The wedding cake was actually a priority for us, but let me tell you...it was delicious!! During our cake cutting, I stuck my fork in the cake for another bite because the initial bite was THAT GOOD. It wasn't overly sweet and the texture was spot on and so moist. So so happy that they were one of the preferred vendors of my venue!!”

I first ate here almost 20 years ago when I lived in the area. I left many years ago but whenever I am in the area, I still make it a point to go have their chicken burrito. It is that awesome. The burrito consists of just shredded chicken with sauce wrapped in tortilla. No rice, beans or anything else. That's what makes it so unique, and honestly, the best tasting burrito I've ever had. But it is Onotria, the same owner and chef as the previous iteration of Onotria that has been one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Orange County - and definitely on of the best Italian restaurants in the county for many years. The original Onotria took a hiatus for a few years but is back now in its new location with excellent food - perhaps now a little more innovative and modern. The service also excellent with a little more warmth and attentiveness thrown in, perhaps a consequence of the small venue. There were four of us, we all sampled each other's food and all agreed that it was outstanding as was the service. It's great to have Onotria back. It's definitely one of the "must try " Italian restaurants in The OC.”

Nook Coffee Bar 2930 Bristol St #B105, Costa Mesa Coffee Shops • $

“This review is already posted on Yelp, but I wanted to share it here too:This place offers a solid (hot or cold) vanilla latte. I usually order mine with oat milk. But my absolute favorite drink here is the The Nook Way. It's a cold brew with chicory, hazelnut syrup, and oat milk. I feel it's a nailed perfection of flavors.I did try the iced Spanish latte, but it wasn't for me. The cinnamon was too overpowering in the drink that it eclipsed the other flavors. I do believe there's an option to tell them to leave out the cinnamon though.Service is hit or miss in terms of friendliness. I have encountered welcoming and cheery vibes about 50% of the time. I think the gentleman with the baseball cap is usually friendly, as is the other gentleman with longer, slightly wavy hair. But the shop is always lightening fast at making drinks compared to other coffee shops, so I won't nitpick too much on friendly service.Space: it's small, so don't expect to sit here for conversations with friends, or to study. There are some limited seats inside, but it's more for waiting for your order.I am also sad they disabled the ability to do online orders or to call in to place a phone order. I'm guessing the traffic for the small space of their shop could be why they're no longer doing online orders because the online ordered drinks could just overtake the counter space.Parking here can be a pain in the butt, so I've yet to figure out a secret to getting parking. I solely go for coffee in this plaza and wished there was a spot for 10 minute parking to get in and out.Overall, I appreciate the quality drinks at Nook and find myself coming back several times a week.”

First of all, the biscuits were flaky, crumbly, and moist; topped with creamy gravy that had cubed bacon in it. I’m hoping that they will add their biscuits to their permanent menu. The second special dish is similar to one of their regular menu, the only diff is the protein that comes with it. This special comes with chorizo; meanwhile, the regular southern eggs benedict comes with grilled corned beef. The combination of chorizo, brioche, crispy potato cakes, poached eggs, and chipotle hollandaise was fabulous.”

“Amazing Valentine’s weekend dinner! Six courses made for a most Indulgent Aphrodisiac’s menu created by Chef Tony. The plating was exquisite, service very attentive, and relatively low-carb, very copicetic with my diabetic precautions. The French Chardonnay we had enjoyed was lovely, paired well particularly with the scallop crudo, oyster and lobster dishes. It was also a pleasure to meet and chat with Yassmin, the co-owner and wife of Chef Tony. We are planning to dine here again, next time for The restaurant’s High Tea, which is offered on Sunday afternoons.”

Three-13 Bar 820 W 19th St, Costa Mesa Bar & Grill • $$

“I stumbled upon Three-13 Bar quite serendipitously, post-haircut, and what a delightful discovery it was! Nestled off West 19th Street, this gem is part of a vibrant row dedicated to nightlife and entertainment. Upon entering, I was greeted by the comfortable buzz of a busy bar, not overwhelming but just lively enough. Shannon, the owner, was manning the bar and her welcoming presence added to the overall good vibes. The place is well-laid out with large wall booths and high tables, perfect for groups or solo visitors like me. A key feature for any sports enthusiast is the multiple TVs showcasing various sports, ensuring you don't miss out on any action. Moreover, the music set the tone - all thanks to an on-demand jukebox that lets patrons be the DJ. An unexpected highlight of my visit was crossing paths with a group celebrating a birthday. Their infectious joy and camaraderie were contagious, and they kindly brought me into their fold, turning a solo drink into a mini-celebration. I ventured in during the mid-afternoon, so the nighttime vibe remains a mystery. However, based on this experience, I'm eager to return with friends and uncover what Three-13 Bar has to offer as the night unfolds. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a laid-back spot with great energy and a sense of community. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Three-13 is definitely worth a visit!”

From a Po’Boy that reminds you of Nawlins’, to an unchopped salad that really hits the spot during artists hour, you cannot go wrong dropping in for especially a drink. The mixology in this place is insane with old school drinks to new school libations made with your favorite booze. The music is usually beyond on point and is a good break from some of the pretentious spots around it (menos Garabaldi…si sabes tu sabes jaja).I always drop in to host friends or fam from out of town as I wish I could be here every week! “My favorite kidney flower is made here with pickled pepper flavor and sauerkraut in it. The kidney flower is also very fresh and tender. The only drawback is that the kidney flower content is too little, the knife skills are lacking, and the thickness and size of the kidney flower are very irregular. The beef in the Boiled Beef and Fat Sausage Double Combo was a very thin slice of meat, not marinated for flavor, and the meat selected was relatively poor; the cold vegetable scallion chicken was a tender chicken, which was not flavorful enough, and the presentation was not bad. “I don't know why there isn't a long line out in front of this restaurant every night. It is a small restaurant in a location that is slightly off the restaurant beaten path.

“Food was great. Our server was great. The drinks kept taking a long time. We probably could have ordered more drinks but decided not to because they took forever to come out. The music was outrageously loud. Like super duper loud. One more thing about the food. I got the zarandeado which on the photo has 2 filets, my order came with one. It was delicious however”

The Taco Stand 2981 Bristol St # A, Costa Mesa Mexican • $

“No more Umami burgers, but tacos and burritos.Such a cute new scenery. It has beach-barrio vibes with the old school Coca-Cola tin tables that you would see down in Cabo but with a brick wall surrounding and the typical taco stand look.We had the burritos for breakfast and they were great. The mushroom burrito is definitely for mushroom lovers and/or vegetarians since they can be overpowering in the flavor. My boyfriend had the grilled chicken and he said it was better than pollo locos burritos.Their house-made chips and guacamole is delicious. Overall it was a really good experience.”

Terrace by Mix Mix 3333 Bear St #316, Costa Mesa Tapas/Small Plates • $$

“Located on the 3rd level of the Crate & Barrel wing in South Coast Plaza, Terrace by Mix Mix is an experience all on its own. The atmosphere caters to both classy and casual, the food exudes refinement and familiarity with strong Filipino, Italian and French influences. Service can be a bit touch and go, depending on how busy the restaurant is. Reservations are suggested as the indoor capacity is small. The terrace outside is modern and welcoming but can be rented out for events, so keep that in mind if you have your heart set on dining outdoors. The portions are nice, and the prefix menu is surprisingly generous. The bone marrow pizza is not to be missed.”

“I happened to stop by one day after lunch at Kitakata and was very pleasantly surprised. I've been a few times now and have tried their Kiwi Basil Green Tea and Strawberry Overload. Both have real fruit and are incredibly refreshing. As with other boba places, you can adjust the sweetness level. Service is professional and efficient, and the interior is clean and welcoming. Will likely be my go-to dessert place after ramen at Kitakata! Highly recommend a visit.”

“We absolutely love this place; the food, the people, and the prices couldn’t be better. I am vegetarian and my partner is not, yet these vegan options are as close to their traditional counterparts as anyone could hope for. My fav is the asada fries. They also have amazing horchata!”

“Wow, what a find this place was! Tucked away hiding in a supermarket and unassuming, dining here felt like stumbling upon a hidden gem. I decided to put their menu to the test by comparing the asada and chicken tacos, and boy, did they deliver. Each bite was packed with flavor, bringing back fond memories of my go-to taco truck in LA, minus the long drive. That alone had me sold, but I couldn’t resist going for the asada burrito next, loaded up with everything, including that perfectly melty Jack cheese.Seriously, if you’re on the fence about trying this place, just go for it. The food is downright delicious, and it’s got that authentic vibe you’d be hard-pressed to find just anywhere. And the cherry on top? A mariachi band playing in the background on a Friday night. It felt like a mini-vacation, a little escape filled with great tunes and even better food.I’m definitely coming back, and soon. This spot is the real deal for anyone craving that perfect blend of mouthwatering food and a chill, festive atmosphere. Don’t just take my word for it—try it out and let the flavors speak for themselves!”

Moon Bay 月亮湾 20048 Santa Ana Ave, Costa Mesa Chinese • $$

“My favorite kidney flower is made here with pickled pepper flavor and sauerkraut in it. The kidney flower is also very fresh and tender. The only drawback is that the kidney flower content is too little, the knife skills are lacking, and the thickness and size of the kidney flower are very irregular. The beef in the Boiled Beef and Fat Sausage Double Combo was a very thin slice of meat, not marinated for flavor, and the meat selected was relatively poor; the cold vegetable scallion chicken was a tender chicken, which was not flavorful enough, and the presentation was not bad. This small restaurant is Sichuan cuisine eaten by Chinese people. It is not catered to foreigners, but the spicy taste is mild, so it is suitable for spicy beginners.”
