“This is not exactly a place to go for a meal . It's a place to go for a beer and if you get hungry, they offer some yummy choices to go with your drink. Small with some tables and a bar, pool table, a neighborhood stop with that Smokey bar ambiance. Menus at the table, ordering at the bar. Burgers, hot dogs, and some surprise choices on menu like hummus, falafel, chopped salad. Portions small, prices fairly reasonable, service friendly. I enjoyed a small salad with a requested change of falafel instead of chicken. No problem and tastey with a hot honey squirt on top.If you're in the area , a nice stop for a beer and a nosh.“

“I have never had a culinary experience like what I had at Bulrush. Normally, a place of this quality (and you’d have to look to Michelin star restaurants to find a peer to Bulrush) is steeped in pretense and snobbery. The staff and atmosphere could not have been more welcoming. We were greeted immediately upon entry and given a welcome beverage. We were soon taken back to the kitchen and dining room. When you dine at Bulrush, you sit around the kitchen and watch Chef Rob Connoley and his team do their thing. It’s fun watching them work, but even more fun is Chef Rob’s explanation of each course. He personally introduces each dish and tells about the inspiration behind it. This particular night was very comfort food inspired and incredibly delicious. Highlights were the gnocchi with hog shank and blue corn grits with a variety of vegetables. In honor of the Lenten season (and a little bit of nostalgia), they even started with their take on a Filet O’ Fish!It was remarkable in every way and each bite was the new best thing I’d ever eaten. The drink pairings were also excellent and matched the restaurant’s mission of sourcing ingredients with a Missouri connection—even the French wine was from a region whose root stock can be traced back to Missouri. This couldn’t have been better and I highly recommend you make the effort to have dinner at Bulrush soon.“

And a standard mimosa.Others in our party got french toast and pancakes. The food arrived quickly and everything looked and tasted amazing. The owner was making the rounds while we waited and is genuinely friendly and caring of their customers. And the host kept us updated on our wait time and how soon a table would be available. It was extremely busy the Sunday morning we went so I would highly recommend their online reservation service, which we used. This will cut down the amount of time you'll spend hanging out inside before being seated. Also note that parking is extremely limited near the location. They do have a parking lot across Gravois, if you're brave enough to risk your life against South City drivers. I would suggest parking on a nearby side street and walking a bit. You'll need to walk off your food afterwards anyway.Parking: The parking lot across the street has plenty of parking. But gambling with your life against South City drivers is a risky bet.“

The service was super slow and everyone’s food came out separately and so far between that we had to ask the waiter a few times about our food and drinks. It took about 20-30 minutes to get 3 shots. The meals as I said, 5/5!. The whole experience and service was maybe 3.5/5. The timing of the meal felt at first rush, we got the first course and we still had basically full cocktails, no much mention on the wines and pairings (we ended sharing a couple of glasses of wine we picked out the menu and turned out good). Despite my complaints I recommend this place, the food was good and with the changes coming with the a la carte menu, I’m excited to try other dishes.“

Old Rock House American • $$
1200 S 7th St, St. Louis - 2.55 miles

“I have been to Old Rock House a few times for EDM shows. It's very casual and fun. There are two floors which I love - you can be in the pit downstairs or hang upstairs for a more chill vibe and there is even some seating. There is also an outdoor area where you can get some air. They keep the temperature inside very balanced, though it gets hotter as the night goes on like most places. A bar on each floor which keeps the wait for a drink very short. They are really strict about the one drink per person rule (like if you're getting a drink for a friend, the friend has to be physically there too). I don't mind the rule but I saw others get a little grouchy about it. There is a $10 minimum. They have a great selection of liquor though nothing super fancy. Drink prices are normal and affordable for a music venue. The bartenders are super fun, especially the one named "Smash." I often see staff engaging with patrons and even dancing to the music, making the vibe really fun and welcoming. The crowds there, the times I have been there, are usually fun and polite albeit drunk. I have been offered drugs there a couple of times but no one was ever aggressive about it. There is staff everywhere so it feels safe. The crowd tends to be MESSY though - the STICKIEST floors! The bathrooms are a downside because there are only 2 stalls and the restroom is small overall. It's usually well stocked, though. The sound is pretty good for such a casual venue, too. I don't ever feel like it's muffled or too loud, the volume is balanced and it sounds good from both the bottom and the top floor. Lighting wise, they need more lasers! Parking can be a challenge at times (depending on when you get there) but there is a pretty big lot and a small area of street parking.“

“We had the pleasure of attending a wedding reception at The Dogwood. Completely unassuming from the outside, this space is sure to wow even the most hard to please guest. The main level boasts a spacious dining room with a beautiful bar. It was cozy without feeling overwhelming. The decor was absolutely gorgeous everything has a modern aesthetic. There is a grand staircase leading to the second level. This space is an indoor/outdoor set up. Guests could filter in and out. There were three fire pits and ample seating on the patio. Perfect for a chilly evening. The bar on the second level was a little smaller, but highly functional. The team were so hospitable and friendly. The bartenders made quick work of keeping drinks full and the party going. The food was absolutely delicious! Cocktail hour consisted of a variety of appetizers including toasted ravioli, mini egg rolls, wontons, and chicken bites. Just what you need in your belly while consuming alcohol. Our meal will rate very high on my list of favorite wedding reception meals. The quality of the ingredients was reflected in the execution of each dish. Everything was perfectly done. This was a fantastic experience! Hoping I have more friends getting married soon so we can go back!“

“Whew! Once again, Blood and Sand delivers. We grabbed some apps off the a la carte menu and of course cocktails before a dinner reservation. Let me tell you, this place is incredible. We were the only people in there and were treated as royalty. The tater tots are one of the most delicate, delectable foods I have ever tasted. The outside is fried to crispy perfection with the inside being light and smooth. Paired with the aioli, this is a match made in heaven. We also got the kangaroo tartare because we were feeling exploratory. The baguette it came with was both crispy and chewy, absolutely incredible. The kangaroo itself was certainly interesting. I am glad I tried it. There was an interesting gaminess(I liked, my partner did not) and along with the quail egg and capers it was a treat. Compliments of the chef we also got an incredible bacon salad to taste. It was crispy and acidic. I must admit, an unlikely pairing for bacon, but they certainly executed. Of course, the cocktails, as always, are up there with the best of them. I got a Big Poppa which is a bourbon and mezcal drink. Two of my favorite things combined into one, how could I say no? It was wonderfully balanced. The drink was not over powered either spirit, and still served as being both light and refreshing, it almost gave off tiki vibes despite not having rum. A shock to me when I received it, albeit, pleasant. My partner got a Limon y sal. Let me tell you, this is going on my list of top cocktails I have ever tasted. The kiwi syrup paired with the tequila and plum wine was phenomenal. The perfect punch of sweetness, offset by the earthy flavor of the agave. That is a cocktail I could drink all day. The last cocktail we shared was one inspired by Kid Cudi, and an original of the bartender. A gin based cocktail with hibiscus. Much more on the earthy this cocktail once again exceeded all expectations. Nice and frothy from the egg white, the hibiscus perfectly balanced out the sweetness. Not to mention, the bitters atop the froth was a beautiful and delicate touch. It was my partner's birthday and the bartender hooked us up. He gave us each a bit of pineapple amaro. And, after some conversation he even made us an experimental cocktail for their summer menu on the house. It was fantastic. We were transported straight to the beach. The glassware was an amazing glass tiki mug. The drink had notes of pineapple with the funkiness of the rum. He says he is still perfecting it, but I like it as is. My partner and I both very much appreciate the hospitality shown to us by Blood and Sand this evening. We have been multiple times, but we both agreed we need to get back soon for the full 5 course dinner.“

As for food, my boyfriend and I ordered The Hangover and the French Toast Bake. The Hangover was a big highlight, absolutely no regrets. A warning for the French Toast Bake -- this dish was definitely made for those who have a sweet tooth! It may be overwhelming for some as my boyfriend found it to be too much, but I found the sweetness to be nicely balanced by the bourbon sauce. The prices were decent for the area, and an automatic gratuity charge was added. It was an overall good dining experience.“

Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery and Bierhall Brewery • $$

“I invited my family on a brewery tour at UCBC's location in the Grove earlier this month and it was a huge hit! Adam was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, taking us behind the scenes and sharing many interesting facts about the brewery, their brewing process, and even the overall history of brewing in St. Louis. Fascinating stuff, even for those in our group who aren't big beer drinkers. We also got to taste several beers at the bar afterward, and Adam selected limited releases for us to try, which was a fun treat and got us out of our comfort zones. My group stayed for dinner and everyone loved their orders: the pepperoni pizza, chicken sandwich, currywurst, and barley bowl were all delicious. The bierhall is a perfect place to spend a chilly evening and we felt so welcomed by Adam's hospitality. Highly recommend the tour and tasting experience, or just stopping in for a pint with dinner anytime!“
