“Life has its bittersweet moments, and I’ve found one of the sweetest right here on Magazine Street. I’m in New Orleans for medical treatment for the next several months, and while my journey hasn’t been the easiest, I’ve discovered that kindness can be as comforting as chocolate.

A few dear friends ordered a dozen cupcakes from Bittersweet Confections, and when one of the owners, Cheryl, heard I was sick, she personally added me to their delivery route, just because. I can’t promise that kind of door to door service for everyone (I happened to live a few blocks away), but the gesture itself meant more than words can say.

I opted to pick them up and eventually, I ventured out for some fresh air and walked to the shop myself. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel like a regular. Jake and Grace treated me (and everyone else) with genuine Southern hospitality. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every cup of coffee and crumb of cake.

Now, technically, sweets are off limits for me right now but let’s just say resistance crumbled after one look at their cupcakes. I took a few bites of the Red Velvet and chocolate with a coconut frosting, and they were so good. The rest I shared with my nurses, who agreed that Bittersweet’s confections are pure medicine for the soul.

For now, I’m savoring the occasional breakfast and the comforting smiles that come with it. When I finish my treatment, you can bet I’ll be celebrating here one perfectly sweet bite at a time.

After being told no so many times and tasting dry, flavorless cakes, I was at a loss on where to get a wedding cake. A coworker recommend Sweet Life and I contacted Jenny and we set up a tasting for all the flavors I was interested in. We ended up getting 3 different flavors for the different layers because they were so good that I couldn't choose. Jenny also told me the design I picked out was easy for them to do. The cake was beautiful and exactly what we wanted. I was very glad I asked for pieces of the cake to be brought to our suite so we could try some of the delicious wedding cake since the rest of the cake was eaten at the reception.“

That aside they tend to miss plate items simple as meat and bacon I have to keeping me waiting seems that I was number 16 and they call 17 18 19 20 then I became a little concerned they hastily put together my plate where the items did not match my order it was no due diligence in checking the tickets to make sure that the items match with the person actually paid for as if there’s no kitchen manager or it’s just a free-for-all back there seems I’ve worked in the kitchen previous places I can spot the weakness maybe they need a staff that’s more enthusiastic about working at such a fine establishment and if they can appreciate that maybe that whole family dynamic atmosphere that they try to create something that’s really a hindrance to the business model and with overall discourage people who want to return and spend their heart on money so that they can keep this black on establishment on and Poppin but as you can see this is why people say black on establishment suck and black on businesses suck and they don’t give you a type of business and respect that you deserve because Black people suck but as another black person I’m not able to say that because that means that I suck so what a predicament this put me in oh my gosh and bring back the turkey Bacon please.“

I online ordered a traditional king cake for pick up about 4 days ahead of time and when I arrived, it was ready and waiting for me! I drove out of state 1.5 hours to get their king cake too! They had a wonderful employee, Kala (I hope I’m spelling it correctly), who was not only checking people out, but also going out to the line to update customers! I also wanted a Queen cake that I was unable to order online like the other, but y’all, this bakery literally took my order while I was in line and BAKED IT! Now yes, I had to wait a while, BUT, if you’re familiar with most big king cake establishments, once they’re out, they’re just out. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in line, how far you came, none of that. But at Antoine’s, Kala literally wrote down the name of each person in line by 6:00 pm (closing time) and what king cake type and size they wanted, baked it, and assured everyone in that line received one! I’ve NEVER seen anything like it! I think there had been a bit of a hold up because a vendor in a big van picked up a TON of King cakes, but I was literally blown away that not one person in that line by closing time was turned away and told they were just sold out for the day.
