The bartenders made strong drinks are were always friendly. The friend knew the manager so they gave us a booth for free. We chilled all night while the DJ played great 90s and 2000s hits. “My friends and I hit this bar up on the biggest bar night of the year! Thanksgiving Eve! We arrived around 10:00pm (no cover) and it was already so packed. They played great music, the DJ was seriously on point. Jack and Coke was only $6.00 and the pours = very very very strong. I was impressed with the environment. The bartenders were nice, the people around me were nice, it was just a really cool vibe! The only thing I'll say is...the bathrooms! Way too small for the amount of people allowed in that bar. And they could have used a little more attention as well. Other than that....great place.“

“I visited this past Valentine’s Day weekend and visited again this past Saturday night. I didn’t have a reservation but still got seated very quickly. It was a hot, muggy night and the hostess said she had a seat on the patio which I was fine with. I had a magnificent server, Florence, who was kind, thoughtful to recommend a drink to the person I was with and even when our drinks were brought out within a short time, apologized for the delay (which wasn’t necessary). I wish I could give a review on the party next to us because they were extremely rude, not only not giving consideration to others being on the patio but were also incredibly rude to Florence. One woman in particular was grandstanding in front of this group and demanded to speak to a manager. Florence and the Manager were both composed and dignified in spite of a rude patron that was looking to get her bill comped (for a party of nearly a dozen people) going so far as to threatening to have everyone at her table write a terrible review. I have worked in the service industry and so have so many people I know and love so this situation had me worked up and I felt it necessary to write a review that our experience was magnificent. Don’t be an a-hole to servers of any kind just because you’re an a-hole yourself. If you give respect, you get respect. Go to The Sugar House. Be a good customer.“

“We walked in to the Buhl Bar and where greeted by George and Aish they where both so friendly and so full of information. We provided our preferences in taste and allowed George to select and make our cocktails. He nailed our tastes and delivered the best cocktails we have had. “It was quiet when we went on Friday evening, but everyone was nice. They were sadly out of the one food we really wanted to try, but The Goat cocktail made up for it. I'm always happy to try something a little more unique that ends up tasting just as good and better than widely-loved classics. I'd definitely go back to have it again.“

“Wonderful Coffee! The hand made syrups were probably the best I ever had. I tried two lattes, one with vanilla lavender and the other with honey cinnamon and they were great! I recommend both of them with oatmilk. The owner was super friendly with my party and I and we had a very nice conversation with her while she made our lattes. Down Under is only FOUR minutes away from the TCF, walking. There is NO reason to ever get Starbucks again while I am in Detroit for Youmacon. “We came on a Saturday for couples night. Staff was very nice, but the music is extremely dated and it's hard to find anything worth dancing to, we stayed from about 9-12:30 and not a single good dance song played, but they played down with the sickness!?

The women's bathroom stalls don't lock, they are saloon doors that open out, but my husband said the men's room has locking stalls.

They have a room in the back where they allow smoking.

No local beer on tap or bottle which was super disappointing. How does a Michigan bar not have Bells? There is also a 3.5% surcharge on any card transactions, which seems dated.

Overall I could see this as a brief meeting spot, but not somewhere to spend your night. The music is not good, they play grainy music videos from the 80s/90s most of the night and when they aren't playing this, they play what looks like softcorn porn from the 90s from a large screen on the small dance floor.“

- Absinthe experience: Waitstaff is very knowledgeable and it’s fun to watch. It’s STRONG and herby.
- Decor: Almost everything was custom build or original historical pieces.

Overall, this place is super comfortable and is the definition of a clean, classy pub/bar. It’s full of creativity and personality.

If you want history, the waitstaff can walk you through the renovations and history of the building going back to when it became the iconic Jacoby’s in 1904 and further to when it used to be a blacksmith shop and being originally built in the 1800’s.

“Ate in the lounge and had fantastic service. Lovely wood smoke smell in the place. Tried 4 different red wine between my wife and I, all terrific. The small plates we tried were all excellent. My favorite was the whipped salted cod and my wife loved the maitake mushrooms. The mains were also great, the halibut was our favorite. The sherry for dessert was great.

Overall, a surprisingly good meal with fun and knowledgeable wait staff. Best meal I e had had in a good while.“

“The food and service from waitstaff is good. However, the restaurant’s policy on carry out orders is absurd and not customer friendly. After calling to place a carry out order I was advised they don’t accept them. I then asked if they would accept an order if I paid in advance over the phone. Again, I was told that I need to come in and place an order at the bar. This is inconvenient. I had to wait about 20 minutes. Management should reconsider this policy.“

“Great "local" establishment with great food. Went on a Friday for fish fry including cod, perch and jumbo shrimp. Salad was crispy and fresh too. Tv's for sports (Tigers, Lion's, Red Wings) great place if you like comfortable and great food and local) we will definitely be back often“
