But backstory, my mom just passed away a week and a half ago and we’ve been on the struggle bus and our server was so incredibly kind to us and there was a magician they hired walking around doing tricks for tables. He was not only amazing and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing but more importantly, he brought us joy to us in a dark time and I will forever be such a fan of this restaurant. “The people here are very friendly and helpful. I was there on a Tuesday for their special prices. When it came time to pay, the cashier told me the amount which sounded correct. However, I questioned why it was not showing on the credit card machine. It was blank and they told me to tap in the middle. I was not real comfortable with charging a “blank check”. Another employee told me the amount was on the cash register window which was covered over with a sign hanging there. So I went ahead and tapped.

The total was in the mid $40s. Several tip options came up, with the lowest one being $6 and some change. It was erroneously labeled as 10%. 10% would have been around $4.50. I questioned that and they had no firm answer. (I suppose it was 10% on the non Tuesday special prices). I asked if I could fill in a custom amount and was told no. The employees were very friendly so I left the $6+ tip for them. The entire cash register experience seemed unsettling.

“We happened upon this place, honestly. Because we needed to use the restroom but, we wanted to be good patrons and checked out the menu. Opted for the Jerk Chicken Bao Bun & Blackened Shrimp appetizers.
Oh my god!! I swear, they have the absolute BEST jerk chicken I've ever tasted. Perfectly grilled/smoked and flavorful and just the right spice, on a soft steamed bun. The blackened shrimp was also phenomenal with great char and served atop jerk sauce and tropical fruit to complement the heat & sweetness.
The gentleman who served us (our bill said his name was Jims D) what a great conversationalist. We talked about the history of the place and how they are working to get their liquor license (which is taking quite a bit of time with the city, btw). We were having about the food and he mentioned another dish they were cooking up, which included this amazing cheezy/garlicky mashed potatoes. Tasted like it had both regular & sweet potatoes. If we weren't already so full, we would've got some to go!!

“I came to Kansas City over the weekend and experienced the delight that is your restaurant. If I ever get back there you’ll see me again. The food was amazing, but I loved the words on your menu and the whole vibe that comes from locally sourced goods. Your menu spoke of kindness and community. I accidentally left my phone in your bathroom when I left. Since we were on our way back to Chicago it was definitely something I needed to find and it could have been a completely stressful experience. It wasn’t. You weren’t just serving up food. I went out to the car so my friend could call my son and have him find my iPhone the thing but we never got to that. A lovely gentleman in a blue track jacket came knocking gleefully at the window. They had found it and he was so happy to tell me. When I came back in to get it your restaurant was packed and it was very busy and yet I felt like every person there had just stopped everything for a moment to find my phone. The excitement when they gave it back to me was amazing. It was a truly beautiful experience. I totally had the New York omelette, but what I was really ordering was the “cultivate kindness” printed right there on the menu. “We ordered this to go while visiting Kansas City, and my husband—who went in to order and pick it up—raved about how kind the owner was. When he brought the food back to the car, the kids and I couldn’t help opening it right away. The smell was absolutely heavenly!
She warned him that the egusi might be spicy and asked if that was okay. He said yes, because we can usually handle some heat… but we were not prepared for that level of spice 😂. That said, the flavor was incredible.
We also ordered the peanut butter soup, and my children and I still talk about it to this day. I genuinely recommend this restaurant to anyone who will listen—we’ve already planned a trip back to Kansas City specifically to order it again (and visit a few museums, too).
