50 Best Bakeries near Garfield

“Growing up, jelly donuts were at the bottom of my list in terms of flavors. I would eventually eat one, but it would be my last choice. A Polish coworker told me about how beloved jelly donuts are in Poland and I was skeptical of how good a jelly donut could be.

Then I found myself at Kohout Bakery and I've completely changed my tune, because damn, the raspberry jelly donuts are ridiculously good. It's the jelly. It's a very good jelly. It's not gummy or thick. It's full of raspberry flavor and there is plenty of the jelly in each donut. Even a couple of days after purchase, when the donut is a little stale, the donut is still so good because that jelly keeps the interior moist.

Other items in the store are also delicious, including the cream cheese cookies. They are not too sweet and have a great balance of flavors.

The service is very friendly and helpful, always patient with me and my indecisions.

Be prepared to bring cash, but the prices are also very affordable, so you can still get plenty of treats for under $10.

“After i try this 3 leches cake i dont like any other one. This cake is just perfect. Im not giving a 5 stars because i bought a cake that was supposed to be 8 portions cake and is literally 4 pcs of the ones they sell as 1 portion so would be better to buy 4 for less money than buying what is supposed to be 8 pcs cake. Still delicious and i will be buying more foe sure but i dont think the price for that size ia fare“

“Best Italian bread around and very reasonably priced in my opinion. Italian pastries are delicious also. Even if you don't live too close by there, it is worth a trip every once in awhile to get really good bread especially for Sunday gravy/sauce. They are open many hours so it's very convenient.“

“Wish Upon a Pastry is a great Disney Inspired bakery in NJ. Michele and Torre, the owners are so nice and great to work with. They have really unique baked goods that are all absolutely delicious. They also take special orders. They are not dedicated gluten free but they offer a lot of gluten free options that are just as delicious as their other bakery items. “UPDATE: So I went ahead and ordered from Fabrique on Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras even though I was disappointed with the one I had initially, and as you can see on the second image on this review it's a lot better! Bun is fluffy, cream is great, color is spot on. It could have a bit more almond creme, but it's still enough to be nice. Thanks for the delivery to the Instagram office!

Cosy cafe, but as a Swede with high standards, their Semla does not cut it.

At an initial look, the size is great. Not too much, but still substantial, and the whipped cream looks smooth. However, it's.. grey?! Not sure if they just forgot to add egg when baking the buns, but looks a bit sad.

When starting to eat, there are three things to observe: 1) the whipped cream is smooth, well done on that part. 2) the bun is not fluffy, actually closer to dry, making the whole Semla quite boring. 3) waaaay to little almond creme. A boring bun can be saved by a lot of almond creme, however there is a minimal amount in this one. Even if the bun was perfect I'd be disappointed.

Overall this is a 2 or 3 on a scale of 5. The only reason it could be a 3 is because there are very few places that offer Semla in NYC. That said, if you're one of the few Swedish bakeries in town, you have a responsibility to represent the country in a better way than this. Especially when you charge an outrageous $9.5 for it.

My Caffè latte and sandwich were v good, the latter reminiscent of the baguettes jambon i used to enjoy in Paris, though a bit on the salty side. I also ordered a beignet which was less good, alas.
