These girls make my morning so much brighter, in combination with a wonderful ambiance and WFH set up, this is the place to go to!!! Thank you girls for all you do!!! Despite a high volume of customers, they always make sure the wait lines are quick and my time here is seamless!! “Right off the bat cool, clean little place right down the street from Lincoln Park (very nice park btw) and very nice people running it, I also have to say how stylish and well kept their unisex bathroom is. Served me a breakfast sandwich at 2:30 in the afternoon called a BAC (turkey bacon, avocado, cheddar, fried egg and chipotle sauce on a croissant and it was slamming. Great menu with great prices, will definitely return and highly recommend it if you're ever in the area...their pastries looked really tasty as well 😋“

I have been here one billion times and I'll tell you exactly what you can expect: The nicest family ever greets you, they make you a high-quality coffee in less time than it takes for you to sit down (how are they so fast every single time?), you hang out on a beautiful patio with birds and people's dogs and comfy chairs.

“Delicious!!! I continue to order from Crepeccino because of the quality and freshness of their plates and portion sizes they offer. This place is ALWAYS on point with their food. I have ordered from them now at least 5 times in the past two weeks. I will continue to order from them. The food is really good. Avocado toast...banging. Pancakes...banging, pistachio latte...banging. Their breakfast meats are always cooked to the right temp. Bacon is never undercooked or overcooked. I could go on and on. “I live in the area and attend college out of town so getting to the library on my off days is tough. I've been looking for a place with a chill ambiance, wifi, good tea, and coffee. Well, look no more for me. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Great rustic look, comfy seating with back support, loads of outlets for laptops, and the second-floor space are super cute and cozy too. Oh and there's a small little outside area that's pretty cool as well. Shaquille (hope I spelled it right) was AMAZING! So down-to-earth, friendly, polite, and easy to talk to. She made me the Tumeric latte for me and I all but licked the cup clean. I had the hummus & cucumber on sourdough toast and it was divine. Also, a great option for vegans. I totally recommend this place if you have similar needs or just want to hang out with some friends. I will surely be going back.“

“Cozy cool spot to hang out and really dig in to experimental coffee culture. You might expect this spot to be pretentious but, not at all. Warm, friendly, and seriously coffee focused with just enough munchies to justify more than one cup. A great find for coffee fiends and foodies alike.

The barister (coffee bar tender) took me on a beautiful adventure in a flight sampling of their cold brews. I've tasted coffee all over the US and a bit internationally and I've never tasted anything like this! (Apparently because I've never been to Japan) The Kyoto Japanese cold brew is a trip for your tastebuds. First a punch in the face then softly floral, herby, and a little funky with a sweet finish.

I had come for the masala chai which had been highly recommended and, let me tell you, I was not disappointed! DELICIOUS!

I was searching for breakfast when I walked in... and they do have muffins and pastries, but I opted for the City Hall roastbeef sandwich. Oh my was she a beauty! And yummy!

“Usually I get a perfect matcha latte here. Definetly go!But the baristo this day told me he was not able to make drinks when I got there at 3:45 pm and said there were closing at 4pm .... It literally takes 2 min to make but ok. They usually close a 5 pm“

“I’ve lived in the building for almost 3 years and don’t really have any negative comments. The front desk staff is attentive and a few people go out of their way to chat and remember you more personably. The maintenance & grounds staff always says good morning and tends to repairs within a day. Carlos recently re-sealed our shower floor and went beyond to re-seal the walls too. I’m not as familiar with the newer office managers, but I can say that the desk and grounds teams are always respectful and willing to help if you ask.

The management company also listens to resident feedback. Last year I suggested they put in more seating beyond the pool area. Since then they listened to everyone’s comments and added grills, picnic tables and lawn chairs.“

“Got to know this small corner spot because of my teens, very nice place the owner and the Ecuadorean girl that handles the food are great very attentive and hospitable they make you feel right at home. “I love this place, whether to sit down and enjoy it or simply make a quick stop. The only problem for me has always been the customer service. Before today, I had never been treated well — there was often arrogance and a lack of empathy, especially because my English is poor. That made me stop coming here.

But today I decided to stop by, and for the first time I was treated very well. The care this new employee showed by listening to me and suggesting something was truly thoughtful. I was happy not to feel judged for not speaking English well.

I will start coming here again. The desserts and food are truly wonderful, but being treated badly is very frustrating.“

“It’s simple, laid back, and neighborhood friendly. Just like its name it’s BASIC & honestly I like the average vibes it offers.

The giant windows allow great natural light in, and the space is rustic mixed with a bookstore. It would be great if they would place outdoor tables to invite visitors in. Honestly sometimes I can’t tell whether they are open or not….

Additionally, I do wish they offered variety such as sandwiches and dinner items and catered for longer hours until 7:30 pm. It would be ideal considering there’s a rush in the area past 6 pm. I am very curious to see how they stay afloat now with the new bagel shop down the block.

The female cashier is nice as well as the chef. The owner doesn’t show much expression or emotion, and I respect him for keeping to himself. I just hope you can keep up with the changes in the neighborhood, I’m rooting for you Basic Cafe!

“I wanted to take a moment to respond to Dave’s post because I was the only other person there during this interaction. It was just Dave, the employee, and me. The way the situation was described in his review does not reflect what I witnessed.
Yes, a mistake happened. The employee accidentally used the wrong nut butter, and the moment Dave brought it up, she apologized immediately and looked genuinely upset with herself. She remade the smoothie right away.

While she was making the second drink, she calmly explained how the mix up happened and noted that the jars are close together. She was not blaming him. She was not making excuses. She was simply sharing how the mistake occurred and suggesting he mention his allergy to anyone else making his drink in the future as a precaution. Her tone was gentle and sincere. She never followed him. She never stepped out from behind the counter. She never mocked him or threatened him. After remaking the smoothie, she asked for his first and last name so she could comp the next drink. When he did not want to give his last name, the conversation shifted, but she stayed polite and apologetic. She clearly felt terrible about the mistake.

The tone of Dave’s post suggests hostility, negligence, and intentional disregard for his safety. That is not what happened. What I saw was a young employee who made a human error, took responsibility, apologized several times, fixed it immediately, and then tried to do something kind to make up for it.

For anyone reading Dave’s post, please know that the staff at this café consistently goes above and beyond. They are kind, attentive, and always wonderful to talk to after a workout at Base!“
