“Ambiance? Not much. Food? Excellent. I've bought their black forest cake many times. The bf cake is perfect - cake is moist, chocolatey and not that heavy. Ratio of cream to cake, should by appearance be too much cream but the cream is light and fluffy and turns out to be well balanced. The guys that run the place are good too - no nonsense and good at what they do.“

“I didn’t know which one tasted better, so I tried them all. I found 3 things I liked... I asked them their names, but it turned out that the person working on them didn't speak much English. She answered me in Spanish...I don't understand Spanish, so I ignored the name? One is filled with egg, and the more you chew it, the more delicious it gets...The other one has the same texture as mochi. It's a potato on the outside and meaty on the inside.“

“I am so happy to have discovered this gem of a bakery on the outskirts of Elmhurst, just a short walk from Queens Center Mall. Today was my second time visiting and I got the dried shrimp rice noodle with an iced honey lemon beverage, and some bakery goods to go (those sponge cakes were so big and fluffy, I could not resist!). This place has all the hallmarks of an authentic Chinese bakery. Let me list them. 1. Contemporary Chinese pop music playing. Music needs to not be too old, but not too new. Mid-last 2000s is the sweet spot. 2. Possibly cash only? (I saw a sign that they take card, but most customers seem to pay in cash) 3. They had rice noodle rolls with mixed sauce on the menu, which I was really excited for but unfortunately was sold out by the time I got there, so I got the dried shrimp one instead. 4. Great selection of baked goods but also so many "dimsum-adjacent" dishes. I am not sure how to explain this, things like steamed buns, dumplings, a small portion of rice topped with spare rib, etc. They make for good lunches when you just need something hot, but don't want to commit to a whole meal. The rice noodle was perfectly steamed, generous amount of dried shrimp, and was smooth and bouncy. The only thing missing was a good sprinkle of scallion, but I wonder if that is something I can ask for next time? Lastly, I was surprisingly happy with the iced honey lemon drink. Oftentimes, this drink tastes too bland (not enough honey), or comes out borderline lukewarm (not enough ice), but they made it perfect. That rounds out the 5/5 review.“

Tulcingo Mexican • $

“Absolutely fantastic. Been ordering from 82nd St Tulcingo for 7 years now and always receive wonderfully kind service and delicious food. The troll-y negative reviews here are completely disregardable and are easy to spot (i.e. people with 1 review) as such. This is without reproach a 5+ star establishment across the board, my (and many others') go-to for reasonably priced, authentic Mexican in Jax Hts. ¡Órale! ??“

Los Andes Deli Grocery Bakery •

“Flushing is full of delicious Latin American fare and, while Los Andes pupusas are delicious, what sets them apart is there strong baked good selection. They have all of your standard selections: Pan dulce, nino envuelto, chilinidra, polvoron, concha, cuerno, and odious de buey. I was particularly impressed with the nino envuelto I had, stuffed full of strawberry and topped with just the right amount of coconut. Give it a try! Cash only!“

“9.0/10 Finally tried New York-style bagels at Absolute Bagels and I can confidently say that these are absolutely the best bagels I've ever had. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt raves about this spot, so it was a must-visit during my stay from Orange County. My boyfriend and I got: Blueberry Cream Cheese on Egg Bagel $5.50 | Bacon & Eggs on Everything Bagel $6.95 Cheese +50¢ | Toasted +10¢ Each. Both were amazing, couldn't pick a favorite. I'm a bit ashamed to say that all the many times I've visited New York, this was my first time trying NY bagels from the place itself. Their bagels have a thin, shiny, crackly crust. When you bite into it, it's dense and chewy but tender and easy to bite through, the perfect texture. The Egg Bagel was amazing and Blueberry Cream Cheese was rich and fruity. The Everything Bagel was a flavor bomb with its malty base and generous toppings. The bacon, eggs and cheese inside complemented the bagel well. These might be some of the best eggs I've ever had, never seen something like this inside a bagel or sandwich before. They're possibly scrambled and then baked or steamed, which reminded me of Korean steamed eggs (gyeran-jjim). I learned that a quality bagel shouldn't need toasting; its freshness should ensure crispness and chewiness. Next time, I'll resist the urge to toast and enjoy them in their pure form. The bagels are huge, I saved half for the next day, while my boyfriend managed to devour his in one go. These are better than any bagel I've ever had in Socal, but maybe I haven't had that many. The only other bagel I had time to try was Bagel co in North Bergen, NJ and these were so much better. I wish I could find bagels like these in LA OC. Though I didn't spot any specific sustainability practices or see mention of them, I hope Absolute Bagels considers eco-friendly initiatives in the future. They're located on a main busy street in Manhattan Valley, Upper West Side. I took the train and walked a few blocks to get here. If you drive here, I'm not too sure about parking but looks like there's just paid metered street parking. The interior is casual, no-frills, small, no inside or outside seating, just a grab-and-go type of spot, a hole in the wall. Service efficient, albeit minimal. Being cash-only, there's a Chase Bank nearby for convenience. I came on a Saturday around 10:30 AM and was surprised by the short wait time, only 15 minutes. They open early for the breakfast crowd. Prices are reasonable, especially given the quality and big portions.“
