One of the desk staff at Franklin Hotel recommended Penrose! The staff, manager and bartender were so friendly. I have to say I was very happy. “(Nov 2014) Uber cool high tech mod fitout and no shortage of opinionated beer nerds (complete with obligatory cult brewery t-shirts). Even at 2pm on a Sunday arvo. Doesn’t quite have the warm of a traditional US bar but still pretty friendly. Very international list with a focus on left of centre. Pricing on the high side but reflects the quality of the beers. Served via cabernet glasses - a nice touch. I really grew to like the place and they use a small space well. Can I say it reminds me of Two Row in Melbourne? And....btw....the only other bar I have ever seen where punters are punching out tasting notes!“

If you do sneak in 😂 you will find friendly people serving OUTSTANDING food (small, careful menu) in a house that Jazz built.

Jazz folks this is the real deal. Everyone else should just come and enjoy the magic of live music.

Pro tip: come early for a seat for the 1st set or arrive late to get a seat by the 2nd set (most likely).

Vegetarian options: Small menu so check beforehand. My 2 vegetarians were fine.

They just do everything right: consistently great classic and original cocktails, unfussy light bites that are better than they need to be (order the olives, for instance, and you’ll get a big plate full of Castelvetranos in a puddle of warm olive oil with good bread), and acoustics that allow you to appreciate the well-curated music and your conversation without yelling. “Very very good food! Our first time here after having heard about it for forever. Good wings, but my partner's shepherd's pie (although made with beef) was the winner, perfectly spiced and delicious. My Jameson chicken was very good as well. Enormous portions and we each brought a large amount home. Best soda bread I've had outside Ireland.

Very friendly attentive service. It was a little hard to hear due to all the hard reflective surfaces and music playing and cheerful people talking, but this was a great place. We'll be back, and are especially interested in the Sunday roast.

“This is such a cute restaurant that's conveniently located right by the tram and subway at Roosevelt Island. The decor is cozy with whimsical items that reminds you of a fictional granny's house. I've been here twice, once for drinks and brunch. The service was friendly both times, this seems to be a regular spot for people who live on the island. I would definitely recommend coming here if you're visiting Roosevelt Island.“
