“Very disappointed. My husband says try again on a weekend day. Went Monday 4pm. Food was terrible. Fish was completely dried out. Shrimp cocktail was slimy and sour. Good service. Lovely view. However won't be back“

“We were vacationing in Newport from Wisconsin and stopped in at Cappy’s. Sue the bartender was friendly and a wonderful bartender. The owner Joe, what can I say….what a guy! Joe saw us walking to our Airbnb and yelled at us on the street asking when we were headed back home. Joe is a gem of a bartender. He has a gift of gab and can hand out the bs too. Nice local establishment with friendly customers and bartenders. We had Dan as a bartender too and he was a friendly, great guy! This place reminds us of our local pub at home where everybody knows your name. Thank you for your great hospitality! It made our vacation so much more enjoyable. Thank you!! LuAnn & Steve“

“Bon Vue was one of our “go to” bars for a couple beers and food, but disappointed recently at being charged $9 for a whalers rise draft on a Thursday afternoon, off season. For a dive bar, that’s excessive.“

“Ralph opened this place up in the middle of the pandemic with virtually no customer base. My friends and I randomly discovered it and were some of his first regulars, and we kept the lights on and helped him out through the winter. “Places like this are a real treasure. No pretenses -- just a great vibe, excellent drinks, and a bar man Joe who has found his calling in hospitality. We attended a vow renewal for family and Joe takes it very seriously with the highest intentions and kindness. This place has legit charm.“

“Super nice staff, yummy food, on a deck by the sea. What more can you ask for? Well, for me, I could ask for a vegetarian entre. I chose this restaurant based on an old menu that showed eggplant parmesan. But that was last year’s menu. This year there are none. BUT the cook whipped up pasta primavera for me on request. We had fried pickles, coconut shrimp, beet and arugula salad, the pasta primavera, and a couple of cocktails. All were nicely prepared and delicious. I’ll add photos of the updated menu.“

“Went with my son last week for the first time and had the muscles and chicken wings, both of which were incredible. We brought home the mac and cheese, dumplings and seasonal bread pudding. Everything was fantastic. we agreed it is the best restaurant around. I went again tonight with my husband. We had the friend oyster appetizer special and filet, both of which were incredible. Debbie was our waitress, and she was absolutely fantastic. So friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!“

“After reading these comments, I just had to chime in.

First off, if you are a sailor, this is your home away from home. You’ll meet other sailors with fantastic stories.

Secondly, if you are not use to the ball busting style of a RI bar tender, don’t come here. You won’t understand. (Hence the reviews from “out of towners.”). But, if you have a backbone and a respectful, yet smart mouth, you will be right at home.

“We were there yesterday, it had a very friendly atmosphere. Our waitress was amazing. She even gave me a gluten free menu! We had 2, 4 year olds with us. the food came quickly and was yummy! I totally recommend it!“

Good location, but parking was tight with the dinner crowd. Plenty of seating at counters and high top tables. Friendly staff.“

We are slim athletic people and we barely had enough room even to open our menus!! We have been coming to the West Deck for 30 years and always had great meals. “We’ve had a couple meals at the Helmway and they were delicious! The calamari is crispy and done just right, the harvest salad is excellent! The scallops were done to perfection…sweet and tender. The lobster risotto is excellent too! We had the cinnamon toast bread pudding…just wow!! The wine selection is just right! We’ll definitely go back and highly recommend the Helmway!!
