“We were vacationing in Newport from Wisconsin and stopped in at Cappy’s. Sue the bartender was friendly and a wonderful bartender. The owner Joe, what can I say….what a guy! Joe saw us walking to our Airbnb and yelled at us on the street asking when we were headed back home. Joe is a gem of a bartender. He has a gift of gab and can hand out the bs too. Nice local establishment with friendly customers and bartenders. We had Dan as a bartender too and he was a friendly, great guy! This place reminds us of our local pub at home where everybody knows your name. Thank you for your great hospitality! It made our vacation so much more enjoyable. Thank you!! LuAnn & Steve“

“After reading these comments, I just had to chime in.

First off, if you are a sailor, this is your home away from home. You’ll meet other sailors with fantastic stories.

Secondly, if you are not use to the ball busting style of a RI bar tender, don’t come here. You won’t understand. (Hence the reviews from “out of towners.”). But, if you have a backbone and a respectful, yet smart mouth, you will be right at home.

“Wandering around town and tried out Buskers. Really good food. Nice seating. They only had the bar level opened but there appeared to be an upstairs also. Wasn't too busy and we got right in. Fried pickles were a great choice. Good beverages to select from. I had the black and tan. The burger and shepherds pie were also excellent. Would go back again.“

“The place always smells very good from the outside which draws you in immediately. Also the food is exactly what you’d expect from a swanky Newport day out. What an amazing dining experience we had at Hooked last night! It was our first time dining outside this season, and we’re so glad we chose Hooked. From start to finish, everything was outstanding.
Shelby, our server, was attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and truly embodied the spirit of hospitality. She genuinely cared about making our evening special, and it absolutely showed.
The food was fabulous — no surprise with the talented Scales crew behind it all! And the dirty martini with hand-stuffed blue cheese olives was perfectly crafted and absolutely on point.

“As visitors from New York, where late-night dining is the norm, we often find it challenging to find quality food options after 9 p.m. when traveling. Gas Lamp Grille truly stands out in this regard, making it easy to enjoy a great meal even later in the evening. We’ve visited multiple times and consistently have a great experience. Seating is always quick, and the service is prompt, friendly, and attentive. The lobster rolls—both chilled and hot—are excellent every time. We also appreciate the option to choose between traditional fries, sweet potato fries, or a salad, allowing for a bit of flexibility while still enjoying a favorite dish. Whether the restaurant is busy during a UConn game or more relaxed on a quieter evening, the staff remains efficient and welcoming. It has become one of our go-to spots whenever we’re in Newport.“

“Felt like the previous reviews misled us. We were in Newport for a short getaway and went here one night for dinner and I was shocked at the atmosphere. Plastic tables and chairs was not what I was looking for. We ended up staying and they were very nice but the place was totally empty. It's a bar that serves food not really a restaurant at least we didn't see any indoor seating or maybe I missed it. If you are looking for something uber casual this is your spot.“

“When I was a child in the late 50's and early 60's my Grandmother wold take us to lunch at Christie's. In her understated words: A fine Newport restaurant" Forty years later I went back and was very disappointed. It was dingy, run down, smelled sort of rancid and the food was just plain lousy. So I didn't go back till very recently. What a pleasant surprise. All redecorated and lightened up, all new menu, new owners and a real pleasure to see one of Newport's original wharf area eateries resurrected. I had, as always a cup of clam chowder to start, and glory hallelujah, it had lots of clams in it. (Yes, I once did get a bowl of clam chowder with no clams in it in Newport several years ago.) The chowder was followed by grilled swordfish cooked correctly (Just Garlic Butter, salt, pepper and NOTHING ELSE) which was delicious. So Christie's is back and better than ever. It's a little further down Thames Street, but oh so worth it once again.“

“They were able to accommodate me on a busy weekend, even let me choose my seat even though I was alone and they had people continuing to arrive. The hostess and waitress were friendly, the food was delicious (pesto shrimp pizza), the view was nice as it's right on the water, and I chose a table that allowed me to see it properly. The band I was particularly happy about- I thought they were fantastic- they played early rock n roll, and I wish I asked their name.

It's a really relaxed atmosphere, not fancy, think old patio furniture. My table was not steady and rocked when you moved, the chairs were plastic, but I didn't mind. If you want a good meal on the water and are not picky about that, I'd recommend this place.
