“We tried the vegetarian banh mi and vegetarian Vietnamese burrito. It was tasty but the banh mi was probably the smallest one I’ve ever seen next to the ones served at Disneyland. The burrito dipping sauce is tasty but NOT vegetarian. It looks like the base for the pho is also beef based. Parking is street or in the lot that is small.“

“If you're interested in trying popular Vietnamese entrees outside of pho, head over to Be U! This woman-owned eatery is located in a prime hipster Echo Park neighborhood, and to me, it's a perfect blend of my culture superimposed on Los Angeles's colorful cityscape. The menu ranges from homey comfort-food entrees to popular street bites, and some new-age fusion items as well. Atmosphere: 2/5 As a take-out-only restaurant located on Hoover Street, there's no seating and it faces traffic. If only there were some colorful plastic chairs (like the ones you see in SE Asia) - the vibes would be immaculate. However, you're either standing and eating or taking the food back to your home. Service: 3/5 Wasn't bad but wasn't warm or friendly either - service was okay Flavors: 5/5 Highly recommend: -Banh mi trung op la (banh mi with fried egg): homemade mushroom pate is delicious, it inspired me to make some at home. The egg was crispy to the heavens. -Rau ma juice: in English known as pennyworth, extremely refreshing, herbal, and will cool you down on a hot day. -Tofu goi cuon (spring rolls): The peanut sauce offered with this was so yummy! The spring rolls were super fresh and all the herbs complemented the flavors. Parking: 2/5 Street parking only, very limited Pricing: 3/5 Definitely not cheap for Vietnamese food, however, LA is a high-cost-of-living area so I understand that the owner needs to maintain overhead costs and pay her employees a fair wage! Expect to pay $4-5 higher than what you're used to paying in the OC/SJ/SGV. The reason why I rate it low is because the portions are significantly smaller than what you'd get at a traditional sit down Vietnamese restaurant Overall I recommend Be U if you're unfamiliar with Vietnamese food outside of mainstream pho, but if you're willing to drive to SGV, Garden Grove/Westminster, you'll be truly immersed in the cuisine and culture“

“2024 update: dined in for the first time and was underwhelmed with the food. Chickpea curry is decent, kaya toast is decent. The dan dan noodles are straight up not good! Extremely salty and fatty. Skipped dessert (unheard of for me) because the main dishes already made me feel so heavy and unhealthy.2022 takeout review: The laksa is incredible. It is easily two meals (can serve two people). I'm not a spice person and this was at the upper end of my spice tolerance but not too spicy. A side of clay oven bread is really good to dip in it. My only complaint was I ordered takeout and my order was ready 15 minutes later than the original estimate.“

“BEST pad see ewe I've had in LA! I'm quite picky when it comes to Thai food. I'm one for authenticity when it comes to food in general. So I like to learn the history & stories behind the food, and the people the food represents. Very friendly & welcoming service. Bright, simple, and clean ambience. The fried mango-sticky rice rolls are an excellent and a quite ingenious version of the typical mango & sticky rice dessert! I also appreciated the check out process with their handheld device & they take Apple Pay. From the beginning as I entered I felt welcomed, again throughout the service was like being waited on by family, all smiles; and to the end of the meal, bows and smiles! 3 suggestions though: 1. The Thai tea could have been done with little less milk and more tea, and maybe offer other milk options like almond or soy milk, but it was still very flavorful and smooth! 2. I would like to see an upgrade in the glassware used for drinks like the Thai tea, hopefully in the near future. 3. Need better professional pictures up on Yelp. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical in trying this restaurant as I saw there were only 94 other reviews, yet it all averaged 5 stars! So I always make a point to try restaurants that possibly may have been overlooked or underrated. This place is definitely an authentic gem one all would enjoy! They actually deserve 10 stars I'll definitely be back again ;)“

“I stopped by with friends it was a pretty solid spot for pho and other delicious Vietnamese menu items.I had the avocado drink, spicy fried soft shell crab, “Lady’s on fire” Spicy Lo Mein Noodles, beef combo pho & braised marinated pork belly with egg & rice. The avocado drink was good but too much ice overall that you only get a small few gulps of the drink. The soft shell crab appetizer was phenomenal and my favorite dish of the bunch. Perfect flavor and cooked just right. The lady on fire was an excellent noodle dish. Flavor and spice was on point and it was cooked perfectly. The beef combo pho was also good, the meats were great and the broth was pretty good. A descent bowl of pho.The braised pork belly was good but I made the mistake of thinking it was going to be fried. It was still a solid dish, the sauce was delicious and sweet. The pork was very tender and flavorful.Customer service is great but sometimes it can get crowded and there might be some delays due to only a few working, but still a great dining experience.I’d definitely come back to this spot again to try their other menu items. Parking is valet only or street parking if available.“

“Downtown LA Pho stands out as the perfect spot if you crave authentic Vietnamese Pho right in the heart of the financial district of DTLA. The pho and soup base boast delightful flavors. The staff is exceptionally friendly, providing great service, and the portion sizes are satisfying. However, it's crucial to manage expectations and avoid comparing the food here to the offerings in San Gabriel Valley or Little Saigon area. -1 star for the pricing, but considering the prime location and convenience, it's understandable. “This order was delivered by GrubHub and was delivered in appropriate time. The flavor of the pho broth was a little underwhelming and left me wanting a stronger taste. The restaurant does take the time to create an authentic broth but may cut the time short, leading to a lighter flavor. Since the broth can easily make or break a good bowl of Pho, this broth is 4 out of 5 stars, which is great for a regular location. While it's not the best in the area, it still has decent flavor. The chicken was a little chewy and did not soften after sitting in the broth for a while. The freshness of the chicken is questionable. As a frequent pho enthusiast, I was disappointed that this restaurant did not offer spring rolls, which is my go-to appetizer when judging a pho restaurant. This time I opted for the fried egg rolls and I was not impressed with the texture or flavor. Everything in the egg roll tasted old and lacked a desirable flavor. The pho broth container and the chicken &noodles container were both of good quality, as there were no spills in the bag, and kept everything warm during delivery. However, the pho ingredients and the egg rolls were delivered in Styrofoam packaging which is environmentally irresponsible. As seen in the pictures, the container with the egg rolls was either cut or melted in an unusual way. I suspect the restaurant cut the box to allow for venting and to prevent melting. Getting rid of the Styrofoam containers would yield a higher service rating.Overall, not too bad. I'd visit this restaurant again if I'm in the area.“

The Eating Factory Vietnamese • $$

“In my opinion, this is the best bowl of pho I've had in LA and I've tried them all. I think the reason I'm giving this business four stars has to do with both the ambience and the selections on the menu. For starters, they do not offer other traditional Vietnamese dishes, like spring rolls, or bun. It seems that it is very limited to Pho and some fried options. The ambience was very bright, and the music was a bit loud for my taste. I like something a little bit more subdued, but I understand that I'm being a bit picky. But the actual Pho itself? Unbelievably flavorful. Another complaint, they do not offer the nuc bro which is traditionally available at every pho place I've ever been to. On the plus side, they have what it is almost a salad bar type, set up where you can grab the sides for the Pho that you want: lime slices, basil, bean, sprouts, jalapeño slices, and onions. This is perfect for me because I like to have a little more basil and onion, but I don't care for the jalapeño and that way none gets wasted on me. If you're only interested in getting a bowl of pho, you are in the right place. I will be back here again for sure.“

“One of the best pho spots in West LA! Per recs, I got chef's special and it was LOADED with tender ribs and tendon. They gave us a free bun thit - which they made accidentally and it was SO delicious too! Definitely recommend ordering the egg rolls as an appetizer. Patio seating is nice alongside the street of Sawtelle. Service was great and checked in on us frequently.“

“A casual, quick spot for pho and other Thai and Vietnamese dishes. I walked up on a Sunday and there was a short wait but once we were seated, we were served quickly, the food was really good, and the staff were on top of everything. This place is especially great because they have sake and beer and the prices are reasonable. If you’re vegan, be sure to clarify with the server. Definitely recommend!Vegetarian options: Clearly labeled vegetarian section. Ask for vegan options.Dietary restrictions: Vegan options to order, be sure to specify with server.Parking: The free parking lot fills up quickly since it’s shared with other restaurants but there is free and metered street parking. The phô was great and I saw that they had bahn mi and knew that I'd have to come back. I did and will come back again too. Everything I had was great. Bahn mi was spicy and came with great taro fries. Updated from previous review on 2024-03-13“

“I’m not sure why it took me this long to find out about this place, but they have the most authentic char koay teow you can find in Los Angeles! (As close as it can get without the one ingredient that is banned here) Their Hainan Chicken Rice and Mee Goreng is pretty spot on as well. If you are Malaysian/Singaporean living on the west side and has cravings for food from home, look no further!I wish they have more offerings like Roti Canai or Hokkien Mee but being an Asian fusion place half their offerings are western. I’ll take what I can get though!“

“I love this place and come here anytime I’m in the area and feeling Vietnamese food. Fast food preparation, and it is so fresh and delicious. I always get the shrimp pho with glass noodles and I love that they put in so many delicious veggies, including bok choy and different varieties of mushrooms. They also make their own sauces. Highly recommend!Dietary restrictions: Almost all of the main dishes are gluten-free, and if you are sensitive to rice as well like I am, they offer the sweet potato glass noodle as an option for the pho, no extra charge“

“Unassuming little place in a strip mall with more parking than what you usually see in Glendale. Food was great! You can also get coconuts here. Delicious yellow curry, pad thai, pad see, fried shrimps. Nice and quick service. They were nice about packing food in paper containers instead of plastic when they could. “[Review #677]2023-080Food Order:BYOB (1/2 garlic rice, 1/2 vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, basil, bean sprouts, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapeños, lime, mint, pickled cabbage, pickled carrots & daikon, pickled onion & habanero, scallions, sunomono, tomatoes, crispy onions, crushed peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, cilantro ginger sauce)Bowl Specialist: Magnificent Maria (manager)!Menu/Price: compact menu with slightly higher than normal price points (expected/on par for the westside), though portions are about an extra 1/2 - whole serving, it's considered reasonable.Restroom: gender neutral on the right, just before the exit to the backside patio dining.Parking: lots of metered parking along Venice Blvd., rare availability during lunch/dinner rush. Free on Sundays, all other days are 25¢/15-mins.; look out for signs in the evening for free parking.Trying to clear out my drafts for the year... I learned about Mȳ Lai via a YEE (Review #676) -- of course -- about 2 years ago. Even though I work a couple of miles south of the restaurant, I wouldn't have known about them even though they're located near the busy corner of Venice Blvd. & Centinela Ave. in Mar Vista.Mȳ Lai (= Vietnamese mixed with American aka Ameriasian) is a modern, fast-casual Vietnamese restaurant that's the brainchild of husband & wife team: Shad Davis & Traci Phan-Davis. I love the idea of a bánh mì in a bowl form & one that you can create. It's a simple 4-step process build your own (bánh mì) or bowl (BYOB): 1) Base It (bánh mì, brown rice, cauliflower rice, garlic rice, salad, vermicelli noodles); 2) Meat It (crispy tofu, grilled chicken, grilled pork, Impossible meat, rockin' beef); 3) Top It (veggies: basil, bean sprouts, cilantro, cucumbers, jalapeños, lime, mint, pickled cabbage, pickled carrots & daikon, pickled onion & habanero, scallions, sunomono, tomatoes; crunchies: crispy onions, crispy garlic, crushed peanuts, toasted sesame seeds); 4) Sauce It (cilantro ginger, honey sriracha, miso sesame, Mỹ Lai vinaigrette, peanut sauce, sesame vinaigrette, tamarind vinaigrette, vegan Mỹ Lai vinaigrette).I had an excellent intro from Maria that I repeated the same deliciousness on my subsequent visits during COVID-19 lockdown. While I didn't enjoy my place of employment, I would have frequented Mỹ Lai more often due to the short distance, generous portions (hefty in weight & volume!), but I left before they reopened. I've been back a couple of times, & my takeout bowls are usually packed to the brim that the lid doesn't stay shut. O_oWith a variety of veggie toppings & crunchies, each bowl is "brilliantly" (colored) crafted. Between the grilled pork & chicken, I prefer the pork even though it doesn't have the char/grilled marks of the thịt nướng that I'm used to. The pickled veggies were crisp but a bit muted in acidity, needed the pickled onions & habaneros for some oomph of chili heat. I liked the flavorful cilantro ginger dressing best; if you do a combo, I would advise an 80:20 sesame & tamarind vinaigrette mix. The ratio of protein:base & veggies were on point that I had a bite of everything from start to finish... not quite authentic, but certainly satisfying & yummy! They have a Maine Root Soda Fountain... you gotta try the mexicane cola! Not in my neck of the woods, but I'll stop by Mȳ Lai when I'm infrequently in the area.Recommended: BYOB (better bargain & more food than bánh mì).“

“I had the Chicken Pho and I was very impressed by the broth and by the service. The Gentleman at the front was very hospitable, and on top of it the soup was very fresh. The Chicken was succulent and cooked perfectly. Despite not coming with any Basil, the broth base was soooo flavorful. Will definitely stop to get lunch here again, didn't even know it was here. 4.7stars. The thing that would put it over the top is some basil, but I'm sure like a lot of restaurants they've had to cut back because there's hardly any people downtown anymore.“
