“I have worked around the corner from Bench for years. I only recently got into coffee and so I've tried pretty much ever coffee shop in the near vicinity and this is by far the best latte in the area. Don't forget there is an upstairs seating area with a table and chairs.

The only thing that I would prefer is to have a couple comfortable chairs upstairs. If I could sit in a cushy chair I'd be so happy! But it's comfortable enough to be my go to spot now!“

My group ended up buying so many dishes to eat family style because we wanted to try everything. Some of the things that we ordered were- Ngoe-thuk (noodles) , Shea-thuk (soup), combination plate of momos, Trama Chura (tofu chips), Dhooloma Tsel-chu (eggplant), Tingmo (Tibetan bread), and Tofu curry. My personal favorite was the eggplant and tofu chips! The sauce the Dhooloma Tsel-chu is just fabulous!! We will be back“

“#1 Fan ~ The food is amazingly delicious and healthy at moonbowls. I get a bowl at least twice a week, have turned many friends onto moonbowls, and have even had our staff lunch catered by them. I will say the pickup experience is a little weird but I'm slowly getting used to it. Using Doordash makes it super convenient and helpful. Regardless of the latter, the food taste and quality far outweighs the pickup experience so it is what it is.

“I spent about $45…for a whole bunch of yummy stuff! It’s amazing to be able to go straight to the bakery, and also kind of dangerous. You can see some of the menu on the window outside as you wait in line (there will almost always be a line), and you can peek in and see the day’s selection of breads and pastries. Only two parties at a time fit inside to order. There’s a small parking lot in front and more parking behind. I highly recommend the seasonal focaccia pizzas! An pain epi, just yum.“

“When searching for a quick, easy, and filling lunch during my break, I ended up here at this cute little Viet Bagel & Banh Mi shop called Tay Tah Cafe!

When you first enter, you’re guided by arrows that lead you to the ordering tablet, or you can order at the main counter. The shop is small, but has plenty of counter seating and some small tables available as well! In between the front door and ordering, there’s a selection of chips and snacks for you to browse as well.

I was initially looking to order Banh Mi but was a bit intimidated by the $17/banh mi price tag. I opted in for an open face Asiago Bagel with Lox for $13 and placed my order. Breakfast orders that are $10+ get a free house coffee as well, so of course I opted in for it!

There’s a bathroom just around the corner from the ordering kiosk, but while I was making my way over there, the kind staff let me know that they are actually sold out of lox. They offered me a refund or to change what I ordered. I decided to switch to the Asiago Bagel with Ham, Bacon, Egg, and Cheese since it was the same price as the Lox!

My coffee came out first, and the person who gave me my coffee also filled up my cup with ice when I asked! The coffee itself had a nice deep & bitter flavor which I look for in a house coffee.

The sandwich was STUFFED full. I’ve never had a bagel breakfast sandwhich where I’ve quite had to unhinge my jaw like this. My photos did not do the sandwich justice, but I promise it’s so much bigger than you’d expect!

The eggs were perfectly fluffy and smothered in cheese. The ham and bacon were cooked to my personal liking. If you like crispy bacon, maybe mention that to them, because it was perfectly chewy for me. The bagel, was soft, fluffy, yet so bouncy, and I LOVE that there are poppy seeds mixed into their Asiago bagel.

The cost to quantity ratio for the breakfast sandwich was 100% worth it. I’ll definitely be back when I need a hearty sandwich.“

“Love, love, loooove this cafe! Nomad is everything that you could ever want in a local neighborhood cafe! They’ve got delicious drinks, incredible food, outstanding service, great vibes, and they know their customers. I’ve been coming here for quite sometime now and I’ve never had a bad experience here.

My ultimate fave: Enjoying their chai latte and a pork chop banh mi on the patio. This combo is a win-win for me every single time. Recently, I’ve branched out of my norm and have become obsessed with their matcha latte and other banh mi’s as well. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything that you try here. What really seals the deal for me is the excellent customer service. The staff is so sweet and efficient. The owner Bee is an absolute gem! That fact that he remembers me and goes out of his way to say hi even when he’s busy working is truly an honor. I’m writing this review as I’m sitting here on the patio having lunch because I’m just so impressed.

Not a lot of outdoor seating, but the coffee is great, the pastries are fresh, and the service was reasonably friendly.“

“Southie has the coziest local vibe—walking in feels like stepping up to your own kitchen counter. Super casual, we seated ourselves and soaked in the relaxed atmosphere.

The menu is minimal, but don’t let that fool you. Everything on it is absolutely stellar. I ordered the poached eggs with bacon over a salad, and my husband went for the breakfast burrito. We consider ourselves breakfast burrito connoisseurs, and this one ranks among the best we’ve had. It skips the potatoes, which some will appreciate (though I do love a good California burrito loaded with fries). We shared bites of each other’s dishes and both were delicious.

The vibe here is totally unpretentious, but the food tells a different story—it’s crafted with real care. And just like being at home, they had wine on tap, so I strolled over to the counter and treated myself to a glass. Highly recommend.

Whether it’s a casual workday stop or a lazy weekend morning, I’d happily come back.“

“A new contender for the best kalamata olive bread (4/5 Green Stars). It’s Day 3 of Shelterfest, sponsored by Coronavirus, and I was feeling kinda satisfied (i.e., less guilty than yesterday) after making an earnest attempt to work remotely. So I took myself off for an afternoon stroll and, landing in the vicinity of College and Alcatraz Ave, decided to pick up some bread if there was any to be had. La Farine was quiet and there was plenty of bread left, even at 4 pm. (So pop in to support them if you’re in the area!) I usually get their rustic baguette but this time bought a loaf of olive bread. The servers were super friendly and one asked me if I wanted some free pastries. Ya-ha I did! I scuttled home with my bag of goodies and heated up one of the freebies – a chocolate croissant (toaster oven, bake for 3-5 min). The croissant doesn’t look that amazing, I have to admit, but it tasted wonderful. Buttery, flakey pastry and just the right amount of good quality chocolate. Later I had the bread – I’m a big fan of Semifreddi’s Kalamata olive bread so the bar was pretty high. I have to say that it was up there with my favorite bread – it was a little fuller than the Semifreddi’s loaf, but that wasn’t a bad thing as I sometimes feel that I’m eating a lot of air with the latter. In summary, I can’t believe I’ve never reviewed La Farine before because I’ve gone there many a time. I recommend the three things mentioned above and also their Irish soda bread is really good and pretty authentic. I just found out that La Farine started out in this location in 1977 – almost as old as I am, said Bilbo. I'm also giving La Farine 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • It seems that they use conventional white flour and organic whole wheat flour. • Their website is lacking on information on ingredient sourcing (compared to, say Acme). I’d like to know more about their flour, eggs, butter, chocolate, etc. • La Farine donates leftover products to area food banks and senior centers • They also support Bay Area schools and other local causes • Their bags are made from post-consumer recycled paper and printed with water-based inks. • Most of the menu is vegetarian and some of the breads are vegan. You can get a whole meal here including dessert for like a little over $20, my favorite being a green smoothie and a hearty chicken bowl with chocolate cashew pudding at the end. “My favorite Easy Bay cafes for working during lockdown - #1, Hudson Bay One of the things I miss the most during lockdown is having a place to get coffee and work for a while – yes, I know I’m not alone there ;) So I’m going to share my very favorite places to work during lockdown – i.e., cafes that have a fair amount of outdoor seating (and preferably decent Wi-Fi coverage too). The Hudson Bay café was a fairly regular haunt for me during normal times, and during lockdown it’s running pretty well with lots of safety precautions: Perspex screens, sanitizer, and a window counter if you don’t want to walk inside. Staff members were super-friendly as usual and there’s always good music playing (it’s faint outside, so I could just barely hear The Smiths and The Weeknd drifting out through the side door). One thing to note is that the prices are very reasonable – my veggie burrito cost an amazing $7 (or maybe $7.50) – and it had guac in there too! And it was big! I also had an oat milk latte and a slice of pound cake and the whole tab was around $14. For comparison, I paid the same amount at another place this week for a coffee, cookie and plain croissant. Lockdown Stats: • Seating: There are about 6 tables outside and chances are reasonable that you’ll get a spot. If you’re stuck without a seat you can hang out on a bench outside the library across the street. • Bathroom: Another good thing about going to Hudson Bay to drink a lot of coffee – the bathroom is open! It’s surprising how many cafés have no bathroom availability after selling you a big old cup of diuretic! • Hours: Note that they close at 5 pm at the moment, not 6, but they’ll let you linger till maybe 5:30. • Weather: Hudson St. faces southwest, so it’s often pretty warm, even around closing time! • Budget: As mentioned above, Hudson Bay is one of the cheapest places around (esp. on College Ave.) to get lunch. I’m also giving the Hudson Bay Café 4/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on this: • Very longstanding independent café and community gathering spot. • Coffee beans come from McLaughlin roasters in Emeryville - another East Bay staple. • Some of McLaughlin’s coffee varieties are organic and most are bought directly from cooperatives or family farms that support communities. • It kind of goes without saying that plant-based milks are available – and raw turbinado sugar too. • The menu is a bit more traditional but there are a few veggie and vegan options. I think they’ll also make veggie/vegan mods to a menu item, if you ask, since everything is cooked to order. • There’s not a lot of info available about Hudson Bay’s sourcing of ingredients – my feeling is that the owners want to keep things as unpretentious as possible. Since it’s lockdown I’m not going to bust their balls over it :D • Waste is minimized pretty well, even during lockdown when most places are loading on the plastic. “My experience at Passione Caffè in their gorgeous two-story, well-decorated café at 91 Shattuck Square was simply marvelous. The staff was friendly, quick, and accommodating and the food, drinks, and desserts were delicious! I highly recommend Passione Caffè to those looking for a quick and yummy lunch (or breakfast/brunch everyday), to snack and study, or for an authentic Italian coffee. Don’t miss out on the great happy hour/aperativo deals between 4-7PM! It almost goes without mentioning, but Passione Caffè is absolutely true to its slogan: “A corner of Italy in Berkeley.” From the food and drink to the atmosphere and the service, this is the only truly Italian café I have found in Berkeley! And that comes from over a year of experience living and traveling in Italy! Besides the beautiful architecture and interior design of Passione Caffè—not to mention its convenient location next to Downtown Berkeley BART—I would like to point out some highlights on the menu. The pastas are all made with homemade, organic noodles and made-to-order sauces. The pasta dishes are so fresh and authentic! The spaghetti with meatballs, their only Americanized dish, is to die for! The pizzas also are also made with home-made dough and gluten-free options are offered. Try one with fresh prosciutto, mozzarella, and arugula! The fresh panini with Italian meats and cheeses round out the lunch menu. It is possible to have a filling lunch for $7-15, which is definitely reasonably priced by Berkeley standards! A serious final highlight was the artisanal gelato, made in-house by the Italian co-owner, Eleanora Cercatore. There are 12 flavors, weekly made with gluten-free options, that are displayed on a beautiful rotating wheel. The gelato is spectacularly tasty—I cannot recommend it highly enough! For your time, money, and fine Italian bites and drinks, I cannot recommend a Berkeley café more highly than Passione Caffè! Please pay them a visit soon—you won’t be disappointed!“
