“I'm from the East Coast (NY) and recently my Brother in-law and I visited a few cities in the state of California. First, we spent a few days visiting family in Los Angeles and Santa Ana. At the last minute of booking the trip, my Brother in-law decided he wanted to visit an old college buddy named Roderick (Roddy) in Oakland. He mentioned that Roddy had a BBQ restaurant named Roderick's BBQ. So the plan was to fly down from Santa Ana to San Francisco, make the drive to Oakland and spend our final evening in California hanging out with Roddy at his restaurant. I didn't know what to expect because I had never met him. Well, he rolled out the red carpet along with some of the finest food (not just BBQ) you will ever have in your life. You name it, we had it, and it all tasted incredible. Ribs, Tri-Tip, BBQ Chicken, Hot Links, Fried Chicken, Fried Catfish, French Fries, Mac & Cheese, and Potato Salad. The Ribs were tender and perfectly cooked, as was the BBQ Chicken. The Tri-Tip was tender and just melted in your mouth. The Hot Links had the perfect amount of flavor and heat. The fried chicken and catfish was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and tasted great. The french fries had a light dusting of their in-house seasoning that was absolutely amazing. The Potato Salad and Mac & Cheese was incredible as well and to wash it all down was some of the most amazing Kool-Aid ever. The type of Kool-Aid that takes you back to your childhood. You better believe the next time I'm on the West Coast, I'm getting me some Roderick's BBQ. This place is a hidden gem and if you live in the Oakland area, you should run (not walk) to Roderick's BBQ immediately and try some of this amazing food. If you live 1-2 hours away, it's definitely worth the drive. Pull up a chair, enjoy the food, and tell Roddy that Chris and Sean sent you and he'll take good care of you. Plus, he's a great guy, a great storyteller, but he's an even better cook.Kudos to Roderick's BBQ!!!“

“We have now been here several times. This the perfect 1/2 way point between picking my son and going home. It is across from the Coast Guard Island. The location is safe. Plenty of parking. We come for the FILIPINO STYLE barbecue and friendly service. Everything is great! Especially when the mother-in-law makes a surprise visit and cooks up her specialty pansit (not on the menu). Everything is fresh and cooked (and barbecued) with love. I think we’ve tried everything now. My favorite is toss between the FILIPINO STYLE barbecue Banh Mi sandwich and “THANK QUE” chicken bowl. There are a few tables inside and when the weather is nice, plenty of seating outside. I look forward to hearing live music in the future out there.Parking: Parking is shared with the charter school during weekday school hours. “03/05/24- craving for ramen and decided to try this ramen place right here at Martinez! Place is on the area of Wal-Mart. Plenty of parking. Went here to try their ramen and some other dishes. You can seat anywhere. Ordered Tonkatsu ramen no spice, grilled squid and beef and shrimp plate. The tonkatsu is great, not oily, has fresh ingredients and good amount of noodles. There's always add-ons if ever you needed anything added on the ramen. The grilled squid seems to be a bit overcooked as it was a little rubbery, but can be eaten still. Sauce was on the side when you order this. The beef was tender and tasty and best of all grilled enough to have perfect sides of cook time on the edges of the meat. The shrimp was small but ok. Portions are big and can be shared by two. Service by Vivian was excellent! She tends to needs and not bothers the customers while enjoying their tasty meal! I saw people coming in to pick up orders. Prices are fair enough for the quality and taste of the food. Will be back to try more of some great menu here. I thought this place was new as there's a Grand Opening sign, but was told that it's been around for about 3yrs. How could I have not known this before? Thanks to Yelp and Yelpers that I had discovered this! See you soon and thanks for being a part of the community here!“

“I've had this place bookmarked for 3 months and finally got the chance to go. After reading reviews, I went early and started lining up at 11:40am and there was already ~20 parties ahead of us. Once they opened, someone came out with brisket samples. It took about an hour til we were ordering. I've never had Texas BBQ so I can't compare but the meats were so good!! The brisket was fatty, smoky, and well seasoned. The beef back ribs were a little smokier also delicious. The bbq sauce and pickled onions made for the perfect bite, along with the sides. The nasi goreng was a pretty standard fried rice that paired with the meat but I wouldn't get it again. The slaw is refreshing and was very peanutty but I wish it was a little more acidic. The rendang plate was a miss for me. The brisket was very dry and it was too smoky for my liking for a curry. I LOVED the kale curry side in the plate though. I don't like kale but I would eat it all the time if it was always cooked like this lol. I suggest getting the belado plate to try a different meat. I would definitely come back and wait an hour again and try the rest of their menu. :)“

“I've been coming here for over 10 years. It's my favorite Korean restaurant. The banchan is always fresh and delicious, plus they give you lots of them. There are a good amount of additional items you can get with all you can eat, we usually get the kimchi pancake, corn cheese (sounds weird but it's good) and maybe the pan fried dumplings. My favorite are the boneless marinated short ribs and bulgogi and my friend likes the brisket. The meat is good quality and you can tell they make everything in house. Yeah, it's not super cheap but it's the same price as other similar places or hot pot.For delivery I usually get the rice cake and dumpling soup. It's so good! And makes me feel better if I'm getting sick. You still get banchan and rice with delivery, so if you think about it with all the delicious side dishes included it's a pretty good deal.I still see the same owners as when I first started going here, I'm glad it's still in the same hands. It's consistently good. The one thing I'm not as fond of is the fried chicken.. it's not crispy.Service is good, sometimes they forget something.. but it's not a big deal, just remind them or ask again. It's pretty busy sometimes so it's impressive they remember all the different things people ask for refills for...Parking isn't great, but I always find a spot within a couple blocks. People mention the area is dicey at night. It's not that bad. Not as good as ten years ago, but just don't leave stuff in your car (like the rest of Oakland) and you'll be fine.“

“Located in the old Chinese Express spot (RIP) -- this place is clean and fast! Generous portions, and they have mini plates if you want less food. I imagine it's great for students living around there. Tried it on a whim, as I was really craving some chicken katsu. The only reason I am giving four stars and not five is because the chicken katsu sauce was lose money.... a total miss. It was watery, and didn't taste at all like the ketchup + worcestershire sauce mixture that katsu sauce is supposed to taste like. It was just weird. No big deal -- I just made my own -- but this is a critical part of a chicken katsu plate! Please fix this, Moku BBQ, so that people can properly enjoy chicken katsu. Otherwise, I was satisfied (as satisfied as I can reasonably expect to be, eating "Hawaiian BBQ" anywhere outside of Hawaii). If you're from Hawaii and want to eat katsu, you can get some passable katsu here -- but be prepared to make your own sauce.“

“God bless you Back 40.My wife and I have two kids under 4 years of age and going out to eat is always a challenge. We’re always on the lookout for places we can enjoy where our kids can blend in and not ruin other people’s dinners. My threshold for a good night out is very low… somehow after debating for an hour where we could go that was also a little nicer for us we ended up at the Back 40.From the moment we walked in the service was out of this world. I don’t know why the host, the owner, and the wait staff were so attentive. It was honestly jarring when coming from places in Oakland. The host seating us made sure to have coloring pages and crayons on the table before we sat down. A small gesture that went a long way in my book. Our waiter made sure to have kid sized cups with tight lids immediately. Which helped us be better guests because our kids weren’t freaking out. Once again a small thing that most places don’t think about. They also had a section of booths with several other kids so we weren’t ruining anyone else’s night who didn’t want to be around rug rats. Love it. They also had a great kids menu. Love it. One of our kids had allergies and this place was great to give recommendations and know what was safe. Love it.Besides the kids they were very attentive with our needs and almost spooky fast with everything we requested. The food as always was so good. I got the Texan Trinity which was way too much food but I loved every bit of it and had plenty to bring home. Also the price was super reasonable for everything we got.Tonight could have been tough but instead it was a joy. For that I’m super grateful for the Back 40 for that.“
