“I work nearby and googled “Bahn mi near me” and found this highly rated place. The line was out the door a little before noon and someone called them a “staple go-to of Union City” and told me you have to get there early.

I got a sandwich and spring rolls for like $16 total and I’m used to paying like $20-25 at other places“

“Went here with my wife and daughter and we got a table right away. It seemed like they had just opened and were still getting everything ready. The servers were young, and they were upfront with us that the food was going to take a little while.

It also seemed like they didn’t have a huge kitchen staff, but somehow they still managed to pull everything together and get the food out. Honestly, it was 100% worth the wait. The food was so good, it felt like Jesus himself came down and cooked for us 😂.

Prices were friendly, the food was tasty, and the overall experience was awesome. You could tell they were working hard, and they still delivered a great meal despite being a little short-staffed.

Definitely a place I’d come back to. And if you don’t like the food… just go home and boil some instant noodles 😂.

Bar Bay Grill in Union City is such a hidden gem! I come here at least 2 times a week for 10 years. It has that perfect balance of a cozy neighborhood spot with a modern, clean feel. I love coming here on Fridays because it's usually packed.
The curry chicken is a must! It's actually addicting.
Grilled garlic butter oysters are flavor- packed.
Stir-fried vermicelli, delicious and huge portion.
The freshest oysters I've ever had . They have $1 oysters on select days.
Garlic fries are garlicky and flavorful.
Chicken Karage, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Their homemade aioli is made for the heavens.
The chicken skin is ok. It is a bit too crispy for me.
Service was also on point. The servers are always attentive, friendly, and check- in just enough without hovering. I remember one of our servers was named Phoebe. She was super- sweet.
Whether you're meeting friends for drinks or grabbing a casual bite, even for a date, this place is definitely worth a VISIt.
My only complaint is they don't open earlier for lunch anymore.

Just know that the inside seating is very limited and there are not that many tables. So, it's sometimes hard to get seating during busy hours. However, the food is prepared fairly quickly and table turn over is fast.“

Toppings on the side were plentiful (basil, lemon, sprouts, etc.). I also ordered a soda chanh (lemon soda) and some spring rolls. Again, never an issue with the freshness or quantity provided. When they replaced the old restaurant, I honestly thought I was going to miss the previous menu, especially the mochiko chicken, which was the old spot’s specialty. The three-item braised platter with pig feet, pork stomach, and pork tongue was the highlight—everything was flavorful, tender, and well-seasoned. The signature eel claypot rice was delicious, with fragrant rice, savory sauce, and crispy bits at the bottom. The mushroom chicken claypot rice was also tasty and a milder option.

If you’re dining with two people, ordering the large size is a better value and makes it easier to share. Just note that the vegetable dishes can be a little pricey—the garlic stir-fried choy sum was $16. Overall, a great East Bay spot for comforting Chinese claypot rice and braised dishes.“

I had a rainbow roll and miso soup. My total was $14.85 after tax.

The roll wasn't awful. The rice was slightly overcooked, so it was mushy. It also didn't taste like there was any vinegar. The avocado, salmon, and shrimp looked fresh. The miso soup was piping hot. It was hard to open the bowl because the surface was 163°F according to my phone's thermometer. There were a few pieces of tofu and seaweed.

I sat in the dining area, which was pretty clean and can accommodate up to 16 people and a small child comfortably (high-chair available). The restroom was closed when I visited. The music was a mix of Cantonese and Mandarin songs. It's quiet enough for a conversation.

As for the ordering process, you can use a kiosk or order with an employee, then sit down and wait until your number is called.
