Was in Hollywood for a conference with a few colleagues and we were all craving Indian food. A colleague's friend told us, go to Badmaash, you will not regret it. The name got me curious. Badmaash is Hindi for naughty, so we had to try it.

Even the Uber ride was fun. The driver, a Syrian immigrant who runs his own VIP car service, was a lively, chatty guy and somewhere along the way asked me for a garam masala recipe. I gave it to him and he was super thankful. Giving out garam masala recipes on the way to an Indian restaurant, the cephalic phase of digestion was already in full swing.

Walked in and the first thing I saw was Sharifon ki Nagri written on the wall in Hindi, which means City of Angels. Naughty in the city of angels. I couldn't stop smiling.

We ordered papdi chaat, onion pakodas, cutting chai, saag aloo, aloo gobi, dal tadka, chicken wings, chicken biryani and kulfi. I stuck to the vegetarian stuff. The chaat was average but the pakodas were crispy and done right, like the ones from a shop in north India where the guy does nothing else. The aloo gobi hit me the most. Exactly how my mom makes it in a typical Punjabi household, jeera tadka, no tomato, nothing complicated. Just simple. Dal tadka was the same, simple and good. Saag aloo was low on oil and very lightly flavored, done just right.

I don't know the chef and didn't get to meet him or her, but I want to say it, you are a master of your craft. Running a modern, smartly designed place and still keeping the food this simple is not easy. I have no idea where the name comes from, but my guess is someone who loved the owner called them badmaash. The food tells that story. If you are in the area this is a must, even for an everyday meal.“

“the size of a 4 top table in a booth being far too cramped for 3 men and a lady, the experience at Black Market was, again, top-notch. Lauren, the manager and many hat wearing server, took exceptional care of our table. Food was fired in the right order. “Great spot and everything about it screams great marketing and fun ideas you want to spend money on. I know. I bought the mug 😬 It’s small and very busy but the staff are somehow quick but relaxed. They’re happy to pause and check on you but they’re also really quick to get you your order. I was hoping I could try the add on cotton candy with my peach bellini but they were out of cotton candy. Sad. The lox waffles was surprisingly tasty given the swap from bagel to waffle. The name made me want to try it but would absolutely eat here again based on food and staff. If you’re looking for a quieter spot, this probably isn’t it. They do have music inside and it’s right on the sidewalk if you’re seated outside. The noise would prohibit taking a call and understanding every word. If you’re there to chat up the person across from you and you don’t mind a little background noise, then this is definitely your spot.“

“My husband and I usually go during happy hour for their poke nachos and crispy brussel sprouts but have tried a few other things. Everything we've tried has been delicious but occasionally varies in preparation quality. We went on March 18th and ordered the poke nachos but they were not as good. The portion was a lot smaller than usual, so we decided to order another one. The second one came out great (I included a picture of the one prepared correctly) and that's when we realized they left off ingredients from the first one sent. They were still good but it was interesting that the two plates were that different. We didn't mention this to our waiter and I'm sure they would have been accommodating but maybe plates should be checked for quality before they're delivered?

Another note, we usually sit at the bar but we got a table the last time since the bar was packed. We were obviously fine with this but the cleanliness was extremely lacking. The menus had food on them and greasy fingerprints. I'm also not sure why the booths are never wiped down?? The tables are cleaned but the food just lands on the seats. Then you're wondering what else isn't cleaned, look around, and notice all the other spots that aren't wiped down. So gross.“

“Our party of four regularly treats ourselves to great meals, so we came to Somni with very high expectations—and somehow, they still managed to exceed them.

Every course was exceptional. I genuinely couldn’t fault a single dish. But what stood out just as much was the service and attention to detail. The team anticipated so many little things before we even had to ask: helping us identify the background music when we were curious, explaining the beautiful water carafe, having fresh napkins ready when we returned from the restroom, and countless other small touches throughout the evening.

One of my friends wasn’t particularly enjoying one of the wine pairings because it wasn’t quite their usual style. The sommelier noticed without us saying anything and proactively brought out a substitute sake instead. It turned out to be one of the best sakes I’ve ever had.

The food, wine pairing, non-alcoholic pairing, and the beautiful space were all outstanding. But more than anything, it was the level of attentiveness and genuine hospitality that made the evening so memorable.

Somni truly sets an incredibly high bar for what a three-Michelin-star restaurant can be.

For me, the evening was extra special as I was celebrating my “birth-month.” The team went above and beyond to make me feel celebrated, including a thoughtful gift, but what I appreciated most was the genuine thoughtfulness and attention throughout the entire experience.

The bar has been set very high from here. I have a feeling many future dining experiences will inevitably be compared to this one.
