“Cool Basil has been a long time favorite of my wife and I. We hadn’t been there in a while when we stopped in for lunch today. The atmosphere was noticeably different. They were playing a funky smooth jazz music where every song sounded the same. I liked the previous light/classic rock mix much better. The staff seems to have completely changed since we were last in. We didn’t recognize anyone, whereas we were on a first name basis with much of the previous staff. The service was noticeably slower and less friendly. The food was still very good. I ordered my usual spice level 2 and it was very, very hot. Much hotter than it used to be. I’m just wondering if they are under new ownership or management because it is a very different experience from a year ago. I still recommend Cool Basil, it’s just not the familiar place that we loved anymore.“

“I've been going here my whole life as a Des Moines native and Roosevelt alumnus. But only when I went yesterday did I come to appreciate how seriously good La Mie is. The quality of pastries at La Mie certainly rivals and possibly surpasses the quality of pretty much all of the pastries that I had in France and elsewhere in Europe last year. I think most people in Des Moines are not conscious of how good we have it with La Mie being the staple bakery of the city. La Mie pastries could easily be like $10 each if this was NYC, LA, Paris, or Amsterdam. But they are only charging like a few dollars each. The sandwiches are also solid and high-quality, at least one of the sandwiches is served with brie on it which is super nice. I've had some egg dishes a few times and they were never as mind-blowing as the pastries, but this is La Mie Bakery, not La Mie egg house, so I don't really care. I'm confused at the reviews that complain about the pastries... They probably went here late in the day like a dunce. You have to get here early when everything is fresh. Funny to see reviews complaining about the 45-minute max on indoor seating... These people have obviously never worked in the service industry and have never dealt with the frustration of people lolligagging in a busy restaurant while people are waiting to be seated. This place can get crazy busy, so it makes complete sense. This is a bakery, not a cafe, if you want to go somewhere to linger for hours, go to Zanzibar's or Chain & Spoke, that's what I do. Best thing to do is to get your pastries and coffee and go sit outside in the back, enjoy the sun, live a little.“

Their breakfast potatoes were to die for and I don’t do hash browns usually. Chelsey S was a top of the line server. The only minor complaint was the hostess didn’t know if they served Pepsi or Coke products. Just seemed odd her not knowing. I would hands down recommend this for a breakfast place.“

“True Authentic Ethiopian food. The owner, Bashatu, is so sweet and friendly, and utterly wonderful to talk with. We had never been there before and was just in town visiting, so we stopped and couldn't have been happier about it. She welcomed us in from the start. Probably one of the best restaurant experiences for me. The food was absolutely wonderful. My husband and I both just got beef and goat tibs, and they are done so well. Chef kiss, Muah! I fully intend on coming back next time I visit! The Injera is awesome! I can't wait to visit again. 😋“

It was a little hot in there but July in Iowa and a busy place I’m sure the air was struggling to keep up! I had the breakfast poutine and it was amazing! Bacon, gravy, and cheese curds are my favorite food groups so I was happy! My aunt had the breakfast tacos which were delicious as well! The portions were huge so we even had leftovers! Coffee lovers this is the place. Often but not always they offer some delectable baked goods. The interior is designed like a modern art gallery it actually feels like you've stepped into a sophisticated minimal but rustic museum, in fact there's abstract art and photography on the walls throughout the location. The cooks are on full display as they work as well, if you choose to sit at the kitchen bar or dining area the open kitchen bar design allows you to watch as they meticulously craft your dish.
