“This place is so worth it. My family has been going for 10+ years, almost since the beginning of the restaurant when it was in a different location. Aki-San will tell you when you’re eating something wrong, but it’s not mean-spirited. You should definitely ask him about his life and his journey to becoming a sushi chef. The sushi is the best you will ever have, even better than sushi I had when I visited Japan. It may be very expensive, but if you have the means it is extremely worth the price. Don’t ask for specific things, get what he recommends (but don’t be scared if you have diet restrictions to ask for something that works). Is is an amazing experience so if you go really enjoy it.“

Watching each nigiri being prepared and served directly to you adds warmth and intention that elevates the meal. The table seating is more comfortable, especially for a longer dinner, but the experience feels slightly less engaging.

Some of the nigiri were truly outstanding. The coffee-cured bluefin and the chocolate-cured ocean trout were both memorable and creative without being gimmicky. The toro tuna belly was also excellent—rich, clean, and perfectly balanced.

Same-day reservations were possible on both visits, which is a big plus for an omakase of this caliber in San Francisco. Overall, Akiko’s offers high-quality sushi and a reliable experience, with the bar seating being the way to go if you want the best version of the omakase.“

“This takeout only spot has the MOST affordable and FRESH sashimi and sushi in the entire Bay!! The omakase box features fresh pieces of salmon, tuna, fatty tuna, roe, and scallop for $16.99. Zero fishiness at all. But my favorite is actually the seared salmon—omg it literally melts in your mouth 👌🏻👌🏻 The California roll uses actual snow crab and all their other rolls are good too. Only thing is they don’t open on weekends but they have a location in SF now. Highly recommend!“

“New Year dinner before the festivities and my first time here—so glad we chose this spot. We sat at the bar and had a great time interacting with the chefs, and I’ll definitely do the same every time I come back.
The sushi was outstanding—flavorful and beautifully prepared. We had sashimi that was incredibly fresh and mouthwateringly good. The rolls were fantastic, and the sake was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. Customer service was stellar from start to finish.
This gem is one of the best sushi spots I’ve been to, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the city. They also have another location in Oakland under a different name, which I can’t wait to check out. I’ll absolutely be coming back every opportunity I get.“

“This was the BEST food I've had in years. I sat there and literally closed my eyes so I could savor the experience and feel ever morsel move through my body. We had the Richmond Roll and the Pink Lady. The vegetarian options are so delicious that I am going to go back over and over again just to try everything on the menu. I literally stopped my conversation because I was having such a spiritual experience with the food. I could not focus on anything other than enjoying it. The customer service was incredible. The staff was so friendly and kind. The presentation of the dishes is immaculate. I felt like I was getting a Michelin star quality meal.

“Don’t know how I just found about this gem in soma! Seems like not many people know about it. We were skeptical about the photoshopped photos and the name 😅 and the overwhelming 5 star reviews, but it was so legit. On a slightly pricier side compared to your average sushi restaurant but comparable to Akari and Kombu and we liked that they have so much more options.
The chirashi set was great, loved that they had oden as well. Area is sketch and don’t make our mistake of going to the sushi place next door!“

“Ok so I have pretty much given up eating sushi cause the quality even at highly rated places seems to be a bit meh now a days. Stumbled on Butterfish last night and I was literally transported back to Japan!
I wish I could give them 10 stars. The food is just exquisite. Just come and try it yourself cause I really won't do justice to it with mere words.
And the best part is you will receive the most hospitalable service which again transports you back to Japan. I wish other restaurants that are allegedly fancy would learn from this service team.
We enjoyed the food so much we over ate and it was totally worth the constitutional we needed to take after the meal😅

“Heard of this spot via word of mouth. Me a good friend went there and the food was amazing! A personal nitpick was it was too dim, but that’s just a personal preference.

The food was fantastic, service was excellent as well, I forgot to ask the server’s name, but she went out of her way to fix our table that was wobbly. I remember she had a nose septum ring.

Wouldn't really recommend dining in, since there are only a few tables and students / delivery drivers are constantly coming in and out; however, table service is offered, and the owners will make your order fresh.“

“We loved our meal at Tane Vegan Izakaya in Berkeley! The things we got for takeout, ranked in order of deliciousness: 1. Pacifica specialty roll, perfect tempura eggplant, AMAZING creamy aioli 2. The Wedge specialty roll, so flavorful, just the right level of spice 3. Da bao, bean curd was especially good 4. Kailua specialty roll, very good but we preferred the other specialty rolls For some reason this actually seemed better than Shizen in SF, which we've also tried. Not sure why. Both are good though! “I enjoyed coming here. All the servers are really cool and casual. It's definitely like a little bit of a party environment in this restaurant - everyone is just having a good time. The sushi is good. The head chef was really awesome and just came to our table various times and explained what he was doing. He was serving us and it's just a really great vibe. They have an $11.99 all-you-can-drink special, so $11.99 per person. I'll definitely be coming back. They also have this weird robot thing, so the service is super fast despite only being one or two servers for the whole restaurant. However at yoni Handrolls it’s different the rice isn’t smashed in with the ingredients. Not only can the ingredients shine but the rice pellet itself still retains that soft texture like in a nigiri. Excellent. Will try again.“

My husband had a sushi box and said that it was very good. The prices are reasonable considering the location. The restaurant's very small so there's not much seating but it's possible to use a couple of picnic tables outside.“
